[Official] R2-D2 [D2] Owners Thread

Well, I tried the above and it didn't work. For one thing, when I went into the contact and pressed menu, there is no "options" option. I then went into the settings and went into sound settings and tried to do it from there, but the only tones it has are the set "R2D2" tones that came with the phone

Is there a way to transfer my music ringtones into the "sounds" list and choose it from there?

Thanks
Barb

Welcome to the forum Barb!

Actually, the native text messaging software is VERY limited in its use (as you have found out). There is no way to change the sound, or the LED color. However, all is not lost. Go to the market and download Handcent (spelled just like that). This app gives you the flexibility to change just about everything - the color of the LED, the sound it plays for each contact (from your own music files as well), to even custom alert icons (for example, my wife has a green envelope, my sister has a pink voice bubble, etc.). The app is free and EXTREMELY easy to use. One thing you will have to do though is to go to your current messaging app, click the menu button (the four squares at the bottom left), go into settings and turn off notifications - otherwise it will over-ride your Handcent settings (and you'll start to get duplicates). Oh, and Handcent allows for limited emoticon use. :-)

Don't be afraid to ask for help - there is a ton of it here and a lot can be confusing.

Enjoy your R2 unit!

Try this. Open contacts, choose a contact, click edit, scrole down, click additional info, scrole down, there is an option here to choose a ring tone.

You also may try Zedge, download a ring tone, then move all you favorite sound and music into the zedge file on your memory card using your computer, copy and paste. Then open messaging, open settings, look for notifications, in txt messaging or handset, look for a sound setting.
This is how I changed the sounds on my phone.

Thanks guys!

Thanks so much for all the great info guys! My phone guys up here in Payson laughed at me when I told them I wanted an R2D2 but I love it!

I will try both the Tone Picker and the Handcent as well and I'm sure it'll work great!!

Thanks again for all your help!

Here's another vote for Handcent SMS. I themed mine so that the chat bubbles were green and red against a starry background, and look like either lightsabers or lasers (pick one).

Over on Ecnassianer's thread, I posted a mod of the boot animation plus a logo that makes booting up the R2-D2 feel so much more like a genuine Star Wars experience. I'm currently running the Liberty ROM, and the yellow-on-black theme that comes with it really screams "Star Wars" to me, especially with the 3D Millennium Falcon live wallpaper running. (One day I may tire of it and switch to a static wallpaper, but for now, it's staying! And it doesn't even register on the battery meter so it's not exactly a power-hog.)

Having said that, I'm considering wrapping my phone up in an Otterbox. I know, it seems silly to cover up that awesome back design. But having fallen several times in the ice this week, I'm starting to think I want the extra protection... (because obviously I'm more concerned about the safety of my phone than my own well-being, LOL).

Hi, I've had my astromech since october and I really like it. I rooted and modified a few things in it (such as turning off the boot sound) I just thought I'd introduce myself and say hi

What happened to this being available in limited quantities? I jumped on it from day 1 in fear it would sell out. Now I see they are stilling selling them for $100.

$200, actually, but yeah, I guess the demand wasn't as high as they'd hoped.

I'd say that the R2-D2 is currently the best option for anyone who is interested in custom ROMs and doesn't need global capabilities, because hardly anyone seems to be developing ROMs for the Droid 2 Global, and you can't get a regular Droid 2 from Verizon any more.

Bought the R2D2 - Adjusting

First time Post:

I bought the r2d2 this weekend. I wasn't going to get a smart phone at all, just a dumb phone and continue to carry around my ipod touch for most organization/entertainment. However, at the Verizon store when my wife bought the Incredible for 100 dollars, I asked what they could do for me to encourage me to get another smart phone - and they said if I bought another Android they would knock another 50 dollars off. So I picked the R2D2, it had a keyboard whichI wanted, the hardward I wanted, and the price was right - 50 bucks after rebate + taxes of course on full retail.

I'm not a fanboy, i didn't want a star wars case, but for 50 bucks, my pride can take the hit + I put a case over it and you can't see the white R2D2. I like that it came with a cradle, headset + a micro USB + fast charger. I plan on rooting it and getting rid of the star wars bloat if I can. This is my first Android experience, i like it, more ability to tinker than with IOS - but frustrating in other respects.

I HATE the battery life so far, but I am coming from a dumb phone experience, so having to charge every 20 hours or so probably a common experience after having a look through these forums.

Anyway, I plan to delve through these forums, great resource btw, to see how I can improve the experience.

Try an AOSP-based custom ROM. I think you'll like it. Free not only of Star Wars bloat (though you can restore the parts you like, if you want) but also of Motorola bloat, which really does slow down the phone. At least, I definitely noticed an appreciable difference in performance when I went from stock (which, admittedly, didn't even last two days on my phone) to Fission (the first custom ROM I tried). I'm currently running Liberty 1.5, and am quite happy with it. You may also notice an improvement in your battery life, though I can't attest to that because I never really tried stock Blur under real life conditions. (Like I said, I switched to a custom ROM almost right away!)

And if you're unhappy with the battery life, have you considered getting an extended battery (BP7X)? You can get it for around $30-40 on eBay without the replacement cover, and you won't want the cover anyway if you're going to put your phone in a case.

My wifes comes in today, I'll def be rooting it and grabbing the goodies off of it for my D1. And then the fun begins :D

I read quite a few pages and cant find if anyone else has issues with clockwork recovery... I got it rooted, got the rom manager and it says I flashed clockwork 2.5.0.8 but after 20 different ways to reboot I cant get it to recover... What am I doing wrong here??.. I have 2 roms on card Im ready to try..

From what I have read it's best to go with JRummy's Droid2 Bootstrapper, it's in the market.
