[Official] R2-D2 [D2] Owners Thread

Some pretty funny stories on how we got our R2's. Guess I'll toss mine up, a few months ago my wife got the Monolith (Droid X) and I found she loved it more than me. Shortly after my former beloved (promoted to bane of my existence) LG Dare died in a horrible sky diving incident and I was phoneless for a few weeks. During this time she tried talking me into the X and I was almost sold except the raw length of the hardware. I considered an Incredible just because they're free..decided against due to the cheap and plasticy feel. Had it down to the 2 Global or maybe the R2 edition. Global was nice cause I'm working on joining the Army but heard the cost for global roaming is redonkulus so it was back to X vs R2. Eventually what sold me was the physical keyboard, cause I do play games on it and the smaller length which works better for my current job and will work better if I get in the Army.

So far I'm very impressed with it but am curious as to the best way to make it a bit prettier. I've seen some really nice Mass Effect themes out there as well as a bunch of good Star Wars stuff but I'm not sure I want to root the phone or just get one of the various Home apps and pray that I can either put a theme together myself or find a free one. Input is welcome please! :D

I already had a Music.odex file in there but I replaced it with this one and I am still getting the same "application not installed" error.
What else could be causing it not to install?

I'm actually not sure at this point - it may have some sort of "dependency" application that it might be looking for. That might be the "application" it's telling you that's not installed. Just got back from a camping trip. Gimme a day or so and let me see what I can dig up (if anything).

I just got an R2D2 three days ago. It's my first smartphone.

And yes, I've lost Vader, too. :(

Check my postings to this forum - I uploaded an apk file that may help you get Vader back. Just copy it to the phone and run it. If it works, let me know.

I hate, hate, hate my clear case. The plastic is actually messing um my R2Droid2 when things get caught between the case and phone. Does ANYONE have a suggestion?

What case are you using??????? Doesn't have to be clear...

I used the Droid 2 maximum coverage version of the invisibleshield from here ZAGG | invisibleSHIELD | iPhone, iPod Cases, Screen Protectors, Covers, Shields, Skins, Invisible Shield

Installation was pretty easy only minor issue was the circle cutout on the battery compartment designed for the standard D2 but nobody would notice it wasn't one piece easily. With the shield on R2 still fits in his media and car dock just more snugly now. :)

Screen Glare

New r2 owner here. I've got a screen protector on my screen but I've noticed when I am outside I can't hardly see my screen at ALL with all the glare. Is there a way to set it up so I can see it or is there a different screen guard that will fix the problem?

Tnx in advance!

Welcome to the group!

You may want to check your brightness setting - if you have it set to Automatic Brightness, it may not work properly with the screen protector (although I'm not quite sure how it works to begin with). Turn off Automatic, set it to it's highest and see if that makes a difference. Keep in mind that a brighter display will kill the battery quicker.

ya know, I bought this for my D1 and upon getting home had a lot of trepidation about all that liquid that's part of the installation. I'm guessing my concern is unfounded. I may just break out the rubber gloves and do this this weekend.

Cool Wallpaper for your R2-D2 Droid

I found this as a t-shirt (and subsequently ordered it), but I thought it would also make a cool wallpaper for my little R2-D2 Droid.

Decided to post it for all the R2 owners.

Hope ya'll enjoy it. :D

The liquid isn't a real concern, no worries. Just make sure to have a paper towel handy so you can get the tiny bits that squeeze out near the speaker.

I just put a zagg on a friend's iphone the other day, it's a really simple process. I will say though that I absolutely HATED that thing, and I will never buy one for myself, or recommend one ever again. It looked like total crap on her phone. It's too thick, so no matter how good you are at applying them, it leaves an orange peel look. It makes the screen look muddy, and I've read on other forums that they often interfere with the proximity sensor on many phones (because it's thick).

I'm sure that thickness is WHY it's great at protecting, and I understand the appeal of a clear protective film, especially if you have a cool phone like the R2D2 that you want to show off. I was thinking about one for my D2G, cuz the white is so sexy...

I'm happy with my $14 VZW 3 pack of screen protectors, FWIW.

I have an r2d2!

Hey guys, got this just about 3 weeks ago. I love it! However, being new to this type of phone (having always had the flip phones) I was really shocked that it didn't come with a manual! I mean, seriously....this thing has so many options and things you would think that it would come with something! I have learned alot on my own, but I know there's tons I don't even know about!

The keyboard is phenomenal!

One complaint, though, is that for no reason whatsoever, without me pressing a thing, it will kinda go to it's "own" screen or whatever....i.e. I might be done with a text and press the "home" button and put the phone down face up without touching anything and notice it's on my Pandora, or it's got the on-screen keyboard, or it's in my contacts list etc.

It's got some cool on-board SW stuff and I'm finally getting used to a smart phone. One thing that is soooooo way better than the EVO I had originally ordered and gave back after 1 week.....when a call or a text is coming in and I'm in the middle of a text or whatever, it DOESN'T screw that up!

Oh, one more complaint...I figured out how to get my other phone's ringtones downloaded and so I can use them for contacts, etc. HOWEVER, have yet to be able to figure out how to take one of my custom ringtones and assign it to an incoming text or an incoming picture message, etc. That is one thing my simple flip phone never had a problem doing! Why oh why???

Anyways, love my R2D2!

Barb

You should download an app called tone picker, it will allow you to apply ANY sound you have as any type of notification. Its free and on the market. As for everything else, I'm sure you'll master your r2d2 very quickly and if u need help someones always here.

Thanks!

I'll give that a try!!! I did find an online manual, but good gawd, 60 pages to print :(

Me and my Verizon guy tried for a whole day to try to figure out how to get my custom music ringtones assigned for text/voicemail notifications and couldn't do it! It was a chore just to get my ringtones assigned to contacts!

If it doesn't work, I'll come back and beg for more thoughts ;)

Thanks
Barb

assigning ringtones to texts

Well, I tried the above and it didn't work. For one thing, when I went into the contact and pressed menu, there is no "options" option. I then went into the settings and went into sound settings and tried to do it from there, but the only tones it has are the set "R2D2" tones that came with the phone

Is there a way to transfer my music ringtones into the "sounds" list and choose it from there?

Thanks
Barb
