I made a back up as soon as i rooted using clockwork and the droid 2 bootstrapper, Im working on restoring my system to stock using that backup. What all "rooted info" do i need to remove before i unroot to ensure i can get the update?

First, get rid of ClockworkMod Recovery by using File Expert or Root Explorer to delete /system/bin/hijack and /system/bin/logwrapper, and rename /system/bin/logwrapper.bin to logwrapper (without any extension). You should then be able to unroot using Z4Root. I don't know if that's enough to make your phone accept the update, but I can't think of any other traces of rooting that could possibly have been left behind if you've restored your system to a stock backup. (For good measure, don't forget to uninstall apps like Z4Root and Root Explorer, just in case!)

So how do we get back to stock then? {{-_-}}

When my phone's GPS crapped out on me several weeks ago and, after trying just about everything I could think of to make it work again and failing, I thought I was going to have to return the phone to Verizon, I restored it to as close as stock as possible by flashing AngDroid's old "Star Wars" ROM over a stock 2.3.20 SBF, and then manually restoring the few missing R2-D2 elements like the boot animation and the "Best of R2-D2" video file and app, before removing ClockworkMod Recovery and unrooting. That's as close to stock R2-D2 as I know I can get my phone in the absence of a Nandroid backup. Minor detail, though... AngDroid's ROM is deodexed, which may (I don't know) be enough to block the update.

(I ended up being able to solve the GPS problem and didn't have to return the phone.)

So, on my R2D2 this morning it said I had an update that was downloaded. TADA! Android 2.3.3!

System Version: 4.5.602.A957.Verizon.en.US
Model numer: DROID2
Android version: 2.3.3
Baseband version: BO_C_01.08.13P
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9-gca08d89bmvq37@zin22lnxdroid28 #1
Build number: 4.5.1_57_DR2-32
ERI version: 5
PRL version: 52363

I have to say I don't feel it is running faster as much as I would say smoother. From what I can tell no new Star Wars bits have been added. Still it is here and we are no longer the red headed step-children!

Same here, but mine failed. Was your phone still rooted when you ran the update?

Got my update today too (although since I dock mine at night, it was glowing in my face at 4am, not a fan of THAT). I agree it's smoother, although I'm not a fan of some of the new interface stuff (namely the four set icons at the bottom, moving my app menu to the side, and the new font on my clock when it's docked... there HAS to be a way to change that, right?). The calling menu is interesting, and the new FB app is definitely nicer, as well as new gmail. I'm always wary of updates though, because the few things I realize I liked when I get them, are the things that are always done away with in updates. Sigh.

No, I run stock, and from what I have read on the forums here, I think it was required that you return to stock to get the OTA update to work. Don't quote me on that. I have only rooted a phone once, so I am far from an expert on the subject.

I think I need some time to get used to the new interface. Heck I am still upset from when the unlock and mute went from the circular swipe to the straight across swipe. Overall as I have played with it over the last hour or so, I feel it has a cleaner look. It's growing on me. I am sure in a couple days I will love it... I hope.

My update failed. I unrooted and tried everything I can think of. I think bloatware may be the problem but I restored everything I could. Hopefully someone will post the Star Wars Rom and I can update that way.

Did the update retain the Star Wars theme or is it more like the standard D2? Any new SW stuff that wasn't with the original R2D2?

My update failed as well (didn't try to unroot - not sure exactly how). Now the stupid update keeps downloading and trying to install! So every so often the phone will now reset - annoying since I use it for an alarm clock. Don't want it going off in the middle of the night because it tried to update again.

Anyone know how to stop the update from trying - at least until I find the time (and instructions) to unroot (without losing the Star Wars stuff I bought it for) and try again?

Thanks!

Anyone know what the chances of getting the R2 rom for manual install would be? I've unrooted and removed CWM from my R2 and my update still fails, not sure what the problem is...

My update failed as well. Go figure. I was rooted and I've already un-rooted the phone. My guess is that there is some left over stuff or something that is causing the update to fail. My best guess is that the phone will need to be flashed back to the stock SBF, but I've had no luck finding it.

i am waiting for my update.... Im currently offshore and having to use really, really slow wifi to download it. If it works, i will try to upload my nandroid backup for you rooted users. It goes back to completely stock but rooted, then i deleted the hijack and logwrapper files and the superuser apk from the system folders... then unrooted. I then removed all of my "root" apps i had installed. I should have the download completed tomorrow sometime... If it works i will post back and let you guys know and see if i cant get my files uploaded.

Update: my update failed also... not sure what im missing.... i will try again, maybe just a bad download..idk

Every link I have found for the original SBF is now broken.
