OTA Updates Possible Before The 11th?

1 out of 2

We had one updated but not the other. When checking updates on the one that hasn't been, says its up to date. Need to look at the updated to test out more.

Do we think this is some sort of convoluted beta test? That is the only reason I could see to have a release schedule like this.

my feeling is that it's a preliminary run to make sure the updates go smoothly.

Wouldnt think so, VZ doesnt do push updates with other devices do they? Maybe the infrastructure isnt quite ready for a full-blown deployment for all Droids at one time. Mine appears to be working well after the update

i really don't think vzw is pushing the upates, do you? why wouldn't the updates be originating from google?

maybe if google is pushing the updates, they're trying to avoid bogging down the network with a huge data hit.

the preliminary few may be a test to make sure vzw is ready for the bandwidth.

I disagree with that. Motorola and VZW are being careful here but not really preliminary. They are doing this correctly really. Please remember that this update wasn't scheduled until Friday. They started early. As long as it's national by Friday night everyone should be happy :)

read the rest of my comment. preliminary as in cautious - to avoid bogging down vzw's network. it's also possible google doesn't have the infrastructure to rollout mass updates, so they have to perform them in batches.

How do you get the update via OTA?
What determines when you get the update?

I have not noticed any request to update last night and this morning nothing.
I activated a little over a week ago does that matter?

i did a little bit more reading on this... seems vzw is really in control of the whole situation. i get the reasons, but if vzw ever decides that the DROID is an outdated phone, and it still works great for the rest of us, we'll all be scewed.

I've got news for you. Verizon has probably already decided that this is an outdated phone. Seems that, despite their 2-year long contracts, the lifespan of a VZW branded phone is about 6 months. That being said, I'd be completely happy with this phone for the next 2 years with NO OS updates, as long as the app development continued at this pace.

you will get a pop up notification to click on to install the update. most of us will not get it till thursday night/friday morning at 12:00am. they wll do 200,000 updates a day starting then until all the droid are updated. on a select 9000 will get it before then per verizons release of update details.

It's the same way T Mobile has done all of their updates for the Android OS for over a year.

Random (and I mean, RANDOM) updates, spread out over several days. People with two identical phones report one phone got the update, the other phone doesn't get it for several days....

meh - verizon won't be doing much to win over its customers if they keep that attitude. they should support it for the initial 2 years before they decide it's no longer worthy of future updates...

...or open it up to Google to allow users to update "at their own risk."
