Here is a paranoid thought : a pay for backup service. Get rid of root... poof goes Titanium... new vacation home for the CEO.

it is obvious this is going to become a nasty hail storm. but the worse it gets, the more painful the community's sting will become for carriers. they think they've sucessfully spawned a culture that cannot live without their data plan.

i can go back to a plain-jane flip phone with voice/sms only and give carriers the royal salute on my way ....

I'm not sure how to say this but a lot of this information, along with others, don't make much sense to me. As I recall, there was a post, from another thread, stating that Motorola's brilliant scheme was to make the Android an open source (i.e. making it possible to unlock the bootloader and rooting the phone) and hand it to our great community of brilliant minds to make ROMs, theme, and all this greatness.

This scheme brought more and more new customers to them each day and making them more money than they expected. It also made the unlocked phones bring in great things that made the iPhones and other phones not as great. Now they want to close the door on us for all this great work? All because of fraud, piracy, and other stuff? It makes no sense to me. Why not crack down on on those who abuse it wrongfully? If it's that important to secure the phone so tight, it cannot be broken into, then why not think up ways to allow the community, like us, to continue doing stuff we love most?

Most of us only get the ROMs to improve our battery life because the manufactures are still not improving it much at all and yet a simple, well-made ROM will put an additional 2 to 3 hours of life to our battery.

Most of us love turning our phone into our own customizations (theming). This also separates our phone from iPhones and others like that. Doesn't originality mean anything to them?

Most of us love how rooting works because rooting provides endless improvements to add to our phone. If tethering is bothers them so much then bring the dam price down. We are not all rich. It may be an extra $15 to $50 a month for tethering services but we may only be able to afford just paying the monthly phone plan while the rest of our bills eat our money away. Especially with food prices going up, gas prices going up, utility prices going up and other prices going up. They must assume we are all rich because we paid for a $500 phone or more or slightly less. I had to wait till Verizon had a buy one get any 2nd phone for free sale to happen before we got the Droid 2 (mine) and Incredible (fiancee's). Otherwise that would have been an $800-$900 bill.

They put the prices too high on stuff and caps too low on data usage and other areas that it makes me sick to even know such caps exist. We luckily have the unlimited data usage but that may change once our contract is up or at some other time.

We pay too much for these things and yet they are wanting to make it more and more strict to using our phone(s). How is that right? Why should someone, who pays $600 for a phone, not be allowed to create his or her own theme? Granted there are way too many bricked phones being returned for doing stuff like this. But isn't this a user's fault for not understanding what he or she is getting into before doing this? I will bet my entire savings account that more than 75% of phones returned (bricked or other stupid issues) could've been restored by a simple SBF with RSDLite or other programs and files suitable to returning the phone back to normal. Verizon and other carriers could have a technician or 2 at their store, or other stores could have a technician or 2, and do an SBF for these customers for a small fee. That's more money in their pocket to save these phones instead of lying about it and declaring it a defective phone when it's not.

There is so many ways to curb all these issues and correct it, work with the community like us, allow people freedom on their expensive phone, and make people happy without closing the door on us. They should just concentrate on those who abuse it (pirating and other stupid stuff).

I understand these phones, Xbox 360, PS3, and other gadgets, consoles, PCs, are intellectual properties of the company/manufactures, but it gets old and boring really fast when we can only do what THEY allow. They need to come up with ways to allow us to enjoy more for what we paid for. We are making them rich. We deserve the freedom that should come with it and be smiled upon, not frowned upon.

Uh hello!!! Verizon is selling you data to be used on your phone. They are "nice " enough to offer you the option to buy an additional service to wireless teather if you don't want to buy it don't use it. If you need home internet they have that too.

Ha-ha this is fun.

If you're paying for X amount of data, I don't see why it matters where you're using it as long as you're not going over your limit. I think of it as a computer being the straw to drink the apple juice(data). Should you have to pay extra to use a straw, rather than just drinking it straight out of the cup?

Now I can see why this is a problem on the unlimited data plan(as I mentioned earlier). But if this is still the same policy when we're all on tiered data, I would find that ridiculous.

One way or another, until I get word of an update to the Verizon iPhone preventing their hot spot and data cap mods, which no doubt will come before the android update I am going to consider this a bunch of huff huff.

I do admit though I just got a message on FB who said there is something going on in Verizon surprisingly when I mentioned spending my free time trying to rationalize the internet lol. Regardless, with how any company works the idea of us seeing anything related won't be for another couple months.

But that is just a comment from a friend I have yet to get a reply from after. Never know though :)

Regardless I might be swapping back to the IPhone and restoring all my itouch apps when looking at these reactions in all honesty but that's unrelated to this topic >.>

you're on the right track. in reality what is happening here is the expansion and bloat of a system getting more complicated based on the capitalist model. this is the only reason for every evolution since the first voice/sms phones became available to the public.

the technologies and infrastructure are the toys/tools that are getting people to dig into their wallets.

think about it - without a data enabled phone, would you stop breathing, become famished and die ? corporates would really want you to believe this ....

so pick the least of all evils and go with it.

If they are going to charge for tethering, the they bloody hell get eBay to fix their dab-nabed site WORKING FOR FREAKING MOBILE DEVICES!!!

How about that: eBay will not work correctly on their phone, so I have to tether.

hahahaaa

Sorry to get off topic by getting back on topic, but y'all think this email that was sent out 2 weeks ago has anything to do with all this? Even if it doesn't, opting out of this would make it illegal for any company other than Verizon itself to learn anything about your use.

Food prices would come down if everyone planted more spaghetti trees. Nice post, btw. http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcT5T4VekwqVSypIyZ767DDCB5swr0cXlKJFCoodgT1sYjkX9NunQQ

Yeah because no one wants Sprint so their going to do what they can to get bbusiness . Is Verizon greedy as #@*$ yes they are s business everything they do is for profit. That's how the world works. And once again why would they create a separate plan for teather If they had no problem with you just doing it? The plan they offer is not that new its not like they just introduced it yesterday. You've know for awhile now that they want you to pay for using that option so how is circumventing their system ok. As far as root I don't see their beef with it as long as its not being used to teather. And you don't brick and try to get them to send a replacement.

Yes because they sell you the service. And they say if you want that you have to pay extra. Yes this sucks but it is how they make money otherwise they would be selling out to some other company that knows how to do business

They're better ways to fix that problem for the most part though. E.g. have the warranty perm voided once they detect the phone is rooted. & looks like they're on the right track for blocking tethering based on gb for the DX. It's still possible, but not as easy.

Pulling the tether apps from the market would probably be a pretty good start.

I give up on this forum. People freak about anything on here. p3droid is covering his ass for releasing a unreleased firmware that Verizon CAN see in his GB Droid 2/X ROM. No one is listening to me because they all believe he's a prophet of the Android world.

YES p3droid NO p3droid HOW HIGH p3droid.
I think your lying! I've seen him raise the dead and turn plastic wrap into an Android device! I was blind and now I can see!!

The only understanding, to me why people root to use the wireless tethering for free, is because of the cap and price. I, myself, do not tether at all. I've checked it out but have no use for it. I do agree, in a way, that it is stealing service when you do that, but then the mix emotions about it is due to the cap and prices on it and understanding why some people choose to root and tether instead of paying extra for it with a cap on top.

Wish I knew what the link is that had an article explaining the purpose of the cap. That article made me understand a lot about it but in a way it seemed unfair to other people using it who don't abuse it. There are plenty of data users who don't even reach the cap limit but are feeling the whiplash of it just because a few hundred people abuse it.

Again, I'll say this, crack down on those who pirate, abuse privileges and services, and other ridiculous stuff. There are a lot of good, loyal customers who abide by the rules and only do some stuff to make their phones better without abusing anything.
