I'm not sure how to say this but a lot of this information, along with others, don't make much sense to me. As I recall, there was a post, from another thread, stating that Motorola's brilliant scheme was to make the Android an open source (i.e. making it possible to unlock the bootloader and rooting the phone) and hand it to our great community of brilliant minds to make ROMs, theme, and all this greatness.
This scheme brought more and more new customers to them each day and making them more money than they expected. It also made the unlocked phones bring in great things that made the iPhones and other phones not as great. Now they want to close the door on us for all this great work? All because of fraud, piracy, and other stuff? It makes no sense to me. Why not crack down on on those who abuse it wrongfully? If it's that important to secure the phone so tight, it cannot be broken into, then why not think up ways to allow the community, like us, to continue doing stuff we love most?
Most of us only get the ROMs to improve our battery life because the manufactures are still not improving it much at all and yet a simple, well-made ROM will put an additional 2 to 3 hours of life to our battery.
Most of us love turning our phone into our own customizations (theming). This also separates our phone from iPhones and others like that. Doesn't originality mean anything to them?
Most of us love how rooting works because rooting provides endless improvements to add to our phone. If tethering is bothers them so much then bring the dam price down. We are not all rich. It may be an extra $15 to $50 a month for tethering services but we may only be able to afford just paying the monthly phone plan while the rest of our bills eat our money away. Especially with food prices going up, gas prices going up, utility prices going up and other prices going up. They must assume we are all rich because we paid for a $500 phone or more or slightly less. I had to wait till Verizon had a buy one get any 2nd phone for free sale to happen before we got the Droid 2 (mine) and Incredible (fiancee's). Otherwise that would have been an $800-$900 bill.
They put the prices too high on stuff and caps too low on data usage and other areas that it makes me sick to even know such caps exist. We luckily have the unlimited data usage but that may change once our contract is up or at some other time.
We pay too much for these things and yet they are wanting to make it more and more strict to using our phone(s). How is that right? Why should someone, who pays $600 for a phone, not be allowed to create his or her own theme? Granted there are way too many bricked phones being returned for doing stuff like this. But isn't this a user's fault for not understanding what he or she is getting into before doing this? I will bet my entire savings account that more than 75% of phones returned (bricked or other stupid issues) could've been restored by a simple SBF with RSDLite or other programs and files suitable to returning the phone back to normal. Verizon and other carriers could have a technician or 2 at their store, or other stores could have a technician or 2, and do an SBF for these customers for a small fee. That's more money in their pocket to save these phones instead of lying about it and declaring it a defective phone when it's not.
There is so many ways to curb all these issues and correct it, work with the community like us, allow people freedom on their expensive phone, and make people happy without closing the door on us. They should just concentrate on those who abuse it (pirating and other stupid stuff).
I understand these phones, Xbox 360, PS3, and other gadgets, consoles, PCs, are intellectual properties of the company/manufactures, but it gets old and boring really fast when we can only do what THEY allow. They need to come up with ways to allow us to enjoy more for what we paid for. We are making them rich. We deserve the freedom that should come with it and be smiled upon, not frowned upon.
