P3Droid: Some Food for Thought - Bootloaders, Rooting, Manufacturers, and Carriers

I did not read through all 51 pages, so excuse me if someone voiced an opinion to this already and you've all discussed it, but:

I understand that the carriers and the manufacturers all want to make as much money and offer as little service as possible. However. I feel that if they want to take rooting and ROMing away from us, they really ought to provide us with the features that rooting and ROMing give us - standard (except, of course, tethering). Taking off craptacular bloatware that we don't EVER use, theming easily, updating firmware in a timely fashion, etc. While I do take advantage of my root to tether occasionally, I never go over 2.5GB a month of data. If they take away root, I may very well switch to an iPhone and jailbreak (unless of course Verizon/AT&T goes after iPhone jailbreakers as well).

It's in your best interest to make the investment to read the ENTIRE thread. You won't be disappointed. Fun stuff.

Have a taco.

...but seriously.

I'm not sure they can throttle me legally just because I rooted.
I dont tether and dont need to.
I root because I like programs like cachemate which help the phone stay fresh and fast.
Black balling my MEID because I dont accept their pushed updates seems legally challengeable to me.
None of this was written into a contract that I signed 2 years ago.

I think that there would be some serious issues with this if it was euro style.

Because VZW is "selling" us the phone at such a reduced rate (with bloatware to pay for the difference) they can do what they want.

If I went to England and bought a phone over there (GSM remember, switch to any network) I would not expect to have anything on the phone, as if I didn't like it, I could just change carriers. I would hope that is where the US is going, but everyone is using a different technology, so it would be YEARS for that to happen I'm sure.

Besides, half of us wouldn't be able to afford a phone in Europe. Not every year of course. No one here buys phones at full cost.

I had a burrito, and though it wasn't quite hot garbage, it did not satisfy as I know a genuine taco would have.

...but seriously.

Me : So if I can use the analogy of an all-you-can-eat chinese buffet... if I was a phone, my girlfriend is my laptop, unlimited data plan being the all-you-can-eat chinese food, you are saying that if I wanted my girlfriend to eat too... that I would have to pay for her also?
Rep: Umm... I guess so.
Me : Seriously. Do you really think it's fair that I have to pay for my girlfriend to eat too?
Rep: Uhh.. no?
Me : Thanks, babe. You have been very helpful
Rep: Is there anything else I can help you with?
Me : Nope.

I wrote that whole post as a joke. You can find that post in its entirety somewhere around page 60 or so.

But I admit, I did use that analogy earlier in the thread in attempt to show why tethering is not included in the unlimited data plan. Then I realized continuing to argue the tethering point wasn't worth my time. Pretty much every every viewpoint, argument, and analogy that can be possibly expressed was made and people reading this thread are going to make up their own minds anyway.

And no, I still haven't found any place that's one price for the whole family either. :)

I'm really surprised that they don't have the android OS set up more like windows.

Let me explain, when you order a laptop you can deffer the option to have an OS installed, but you can still download it and install it later if you wanted. If your forced upon to buy an OS you can return the OS for a refund ( or atleast you could once upon a time ).

I almost feel that this way of distributing the Android OS will come around. I would love to buy a phone that didn't have an OS installed, then do what I wanted with it. Yes, i know that just leaves big holes for hackers to get in and tethering, but Verizon will get it figured out. They should included tethering with data and go to tiered data plans, capped at certain amounts, at least until technology has advanced enough to hold many users consuming large amounts of data.

This theory would be more for the techy users, not the best for the average consumer.

This reminds me of the Seinfeld episode when the cable guy tries to lure Kramer outta his apt for having free cable haha

Ok, in general, i started reading the last 5 pages of this thread and it's 99.9% useless garbage, trolling, calling people out and stuff like "don't be a tough guy, b/c i'm like totally more of a tough guy than you and have more money so i don't even care, i just sit here trolling this thread because I have nothing else to do".

So please, if you don't know for sure, stop speculating and just be quiet. Every time you open your mouths you're adding to the misinformation.

In my case, I pay for the all you can eat every time, I never take more than half a plate of food, and once every other month or so I toss my girlfriend a piece of celery from my plate when the waiter isn't looking.

Sue me. LOL
