Remix Tablet: Kickstarter with a twist

The hardest part about hardware on KS, from what I have read, is that the estimates for hardware builds are often way short of what it actually cost to produce an item. With that being said, I am sure $100 for the tablet would not have been achievable. If that were the case, they would have to have some magic to compete with companies that offer the same crappy tablets you see at WalMart for $79. If that is the case, I will just go to WalMart to buy a crappy tablet.

They give some form of hope that if I buy in at $39, even after the KS funding ends, I will get a $300 tablet for my $39 investment.

What makes anyone think a $39. tablet is worth $300. Is it because they say it's worth $300.? I have a bricked Galaxy S3. I say it's worth $300. Does anyone want it for $300. I doubt it.

I'm considering it. I'll definitely read fine print. I know there have been KS projects that met their goals and then didn't pony up the rewards, so there's no doubt in my mind that this could be a potential outcome. However, devil's advocate or not, I agree with Pere that $39 isn't the largest amount of money I've blown on something that didn't pan out or turned out to disappoint.

Their website, while slick, lacks any real information. Which means I question the validity of this information, and makes me less likely to pony up for this. I'll watch with a skeptical eye.

They were at CES, but that doesn't prevent this from being vaporware... On the other hand, they're trying to get money to import, not manufacture, and that's a whole other kettle of fish. If they're serious about making a run a the Surface market, I say more power to them.

How much is a Tegra 4 worth now? NVidia couldn't move them when they were new, so they must have a stockpile of them six crates deep. 1080P screens in the sub-12-inch space are cheap enough. The cover is a sticking point, but...

I figure they're looking to get inexpensive hype (which they're getting), and then deliver samples (albeit a LOT of them) at a loss, let people talk about how good they are, and then sell them.

I disagree with the retail price, but I'm a cheapskate and I think most mobile hardware is overpriced. It's also quite possible that they have strict limits on the $39 tier -- 500 backers at that price point would be sufficient to prove their point, I would think, and they might set it as low as 10 or 20.

$40 for an 11 inch tablet with 2 gigs of RAM and a Tegra 4? Yeah, I'll shell out the money for that, even if it takes a few months to get to me. It's still a nice upgrade from my OG Nexus 7 and for that price I'd be crazy not to try it.

Plus I'd like to get a hands on of their custom Android software. It may have some pretty slick features.

And if it doesn't pan out, $40 is about what I spend when I take the GF out to eat. I'll just stay at home and make her cook Ramen noodles on one of those nights instead. ;)
