1. Don't have ROM Manager or ClockworkMod. Never needed them before.
2. Already have SPRecovery on... how else would I do a nandroid backup?
3. Nevermind. I tried it again (4th or 5th time today) and it worked.
4. Thanks
I misunderstood and thought you had ClockworkMod installed.
You should try ROM Manager sometime. It is really cool. It is an app that you install on your phone and from there, you can install ClockworkMod utility which is another bootable recovery tool. You can only have one recovery utility installed at any given time. If you install ClockworkMod it will take out SPRecovery, and if you flash on SPRecovery it will remove ClockworkMod and install SPRecovery.
The cool thing about ROM Manager is that you can tell it to do backups, manage and restore backups and download new ROMs from developers (like the LithiumMod v1.0.12 or the Kangerade v5.0.9 for example). You can also change kernels easily using ROM Manager. You tell it what you want to do, and it downloads the ROM, kernel, and all the install options from the JRummy folder, (or whoever the dev is), and then it will reboot the phone automatically into the ClockworkMod recovery utility and flash that ROM on, and then reboot again into the new ROM. ClockworkMod has it's own backup/restore utility built into the tool called 'Nandroid' , and it creates backups and saves them into a folder called /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/ and it also saves all the downloaded ROMs into a download folder inside the clockworkmod folder.
I used to be a diehard SPRecovery tool user until I came across the ROM Manager / ClockworkMod duo, and now I almost exclusively use these tools because they are MUCH easier to use. But like I said before, I still use SPRecovery once in a while to do occasional backups whenever I get some major build working and perfected, I'll make backups using both ClockworkMod, and SPRecovery, just so I have separate backups for more reliable redundancy. ROM Manager has the options right in there to flash both ClockworkMod, and SPRecovery, so you can easily toggle back and forth between the 2 tools, but if you want the full automation of ROM Manager to work, you must have the ClockworkMod tool flashed on your phone.
For day-to-day ROM experimentation I prefer using ROM Manager by far because I can switch kernels, themes, and options easily without having to keep copies of all those kernels on my SD Card. ROM Manager will just download your new recipe and install it quickly without having to perform multiple steps manually. It is all automatic.
