[HACKS] Root Droid 1 - regardless of OS version

now if I could only figure out how to install a kernel....

do I have to also rename it to update.zip?

All roms, kernels and themes are installed with the update.zip format. At least that's how it is in sprecovey. I think its the same in clockwork, although I have never used it.
You install a kernel and a theme the same way just delete the update file on the root of your SD card and put the kernel or theme on and rename it update.zip. Remember to delete the current update.zip file first or you will have problems installing.

As for the best rom its your choice, I like chevyno1's SS rom. Take a look in the custom roms section under droid hacking. There are many to choose from. :)

Trying out Sprint for a month. Sent from my Evo using Tapatalk. 4G is pointless when you don't live in one of the few available network areas.

Thanks.

I've quickly made a habit of renaming the update files after I finish with them so I can remember what update was what update!

Everything now is starting to flow a bit...I think

Forgot to mention one Very important step when ever you are going to apply a new Rom, make a nandroid backup first. In case the Rom/kernel you apply does not work well with your phone.

i may want to restore the phone back to it's pre-rooted state, can i do this after i've rooted it ? can someone pls point me to the thread or steps i need to perform ?

If you want to unroot the phone for a return to Verizon, you flash a stock SBF and send it in. If you want to break root and restore stock recovery for whatever reason you force SPRecovery to install the FRG22D large OTA update file.

could you give me more details or steps so i can do the second suggestion you made ?

It's off-topic, but I'll link/instruct you.

http://android.clients.google.com/packages/ota/verizon_voles/a5e329b00288.signed-voles-ota-50454.zip

Download this. Rename it update.zip -- make sure it's update.zip and not .zip.zip or update or update .zip. Place on the root of your SD card. Reboot phone into recovery. Select install. Select allow update.zip install. Select install update.zip (deprecated). Wait. Reboot. Wonder why you ever unrooted and immediately reroot.

The last step isn't required, but it seems to happen a lot. :D

zero7404 - Sometimes it's nice knowing you can undo something simply and easily if you have to. I bought my Droid the day they came out; never owned a "smart-phone" before, so I had no idea what I was getting into. Since rooting a couple months ago, I've discovered there are a whole lot of ways you can customize it to your liking if you look around, from how it looks, to apps you may want but only work when rooted, or even uninstall system apps you never use that take up too much system resources.

When the time comes, the next phone I get will be unlocked. Heck, I'll probably keep this one on another line just to experiment with...:icon_eek:

yea, this is what makes android addictive i think ... same thing with blackberry, when i had one i used to explore the custom OS builds

with the droid i haven't gotten that far yet. after rooting, i noticed some 'anomalies' that i'm not too crazy about (rebooting after a battery pull sometimes freezes the OS before fully loaded, some widgets aren't loading properly, etc ...)
