Download the fastboot utility linked in post #1 for your OS.
If you are using Windows (boo) download and install the HTC Android USB Driver for Microsoft PC from the bottom of this page.
Run the command as appropriate for your OS;
fastboot flash recovery /path/to/<recovery>.img (windows)
./fastboot-mac recovery /path/to/<recovery>.img (mac x86)
./fastboot recovery /path/to/<recovery>.img (linux)

Clockworkmod includes a backup utility (also known as nandroid backups).

It's a good idea to do backups before installing new roms or modifying a current one.

oh my!!!

youre talking to a non-tech guy!
who doesnt know what all that means! and where to start!
i am having trouble even getting into hboot mode!
it says hboot and s-off but then tells me to exit

That stinks. Sorry. I had to go to the command prompt from Windows 7 and run the recovery flash command, then change the root file to update.zip and run it from recovery. It's misleading to say S-OFF because that allows the phone to be unlocked, but is not rooting the phone.

how do i get this into the hboot screen?
i hold vol down and just push power and hold or for only a second??
wont go into it!
then what do i run the su2.3-6.1ef signed file i found on adx?
wth do i do?
