You need to pull the battery and have it unplugged from USB. Then insert battery, hold volume down and keep holding while hitting power button. Then release power button. That will get you to hboot. Then choose recovery to see if it's installed. IF it is you can load the zip root file.

went into update from sd card and it didnt find the zip!

That root file should be on the SD card called update.zip.

i found it on sd card BUT when i went to install it i says cant open sdcard & the file and then installation aborted!
should i have this connected to laptop?

Just put the root file (renamed to update.zip) on the SD card. Then run recovery and root it.
