SBF to root and to unroot

Ugh...I can't get this dang RSD to recognize my phone.

I've tried it on two different computers. A 32 bit XP and a 64 bit Vista.

I'm following the directions, but there must be something I'm doing wrong.

Ok i found the blue M after I installed the drivers but it doesnt say anywhere in that about installing rsd lite

It doesn't say anywhere in "what" about installing RSD Lite? Did it run, are you all set?

There is a folder in my programs that says motorola driver installer and if you click on it three things pop up: motorola diver installer.exe, the license agreement and the driver installer release notes, nothing ever comes up anywhere in my programs about rsd lite just that folder

We're missing something here, not sure what. Time for some Q&A. It is redundant, so sorry for that, but lets start from the beginning and see what is going on. Please answer each of the following questions.

1) We are using the first two options in the first post of this thread for instructions, right?
2) you have downloaded and installed the drivers successfully. It won't hurt to install them again. Is this step complete?
3) you have downloaded and installed RSD Lite successfully. Did this happen?
4) Start/Programs/"RSD Lite" should start the program and bring up the screen you see in the screenshot in the first post of this thread. There are no other options under the "RSD Lite" link contained within "Programs" when you click on START. Do you see this option?
5) You said: It says that i have installed rsd lite but i cant get it to open. What says this and when?
6) You said: No icons appear anywhere after it says that, and if i try to search it it says no application found . What is saying no application is found? Are you double clicking the SBF file trying to run/open that?

I'm running through this process here and everything's going well so far, just made a nandroid backup, and now I'm at the step 'wipe data factory reset' which makes me stop for a second. Factory reset, as in, lose my settings? Or factory reset, as in all of my installed apps go bye bye?

There's a guide here which is pretty much the same,
Guide to Rooting Android 2.1 on a Motorola Droid | Droid Life: A Motorola Droid Blog

Which says after the 'wipe data factory reset' you are then asked to specify 'wipe cache partition'. I'm not sure what that means.

My question is, if I follow this, will I lose all of my OS settings, or have to reinstall my apps? (should I be backing them up with Astro?)

Or will following this just add root access to my phone and change nothing else?

Yes, use Astro, a free app from the market. Use it to backup all your downloaded installation files for market apps to your SDcard. The installed apps should come back, but may take a while. The backup lets you reinstall them right away. The desktop won't be set up anymore so you will have to place the icons where you want them again.

Ok i finally figured out what i was doing wrong, i didnt realize that the rsd lite link and the ones below it are for different thing, sorry for all the confusion and thanks for the help.

dont know what im doing wrong when i go to "install/sdcard/update.zip (deprecated)" and click that it loads for a second then says

E: Cant open /sdcard/update.zip (no such file or directory)

tryed 3 times now :(

Dd you hit allow update.zip first? Did you double check to make sure the file isn't named update.zip.zip?

Sent from my Droid using Tapatalk

File Size Question

The link in your post for the ESE81Update file is 141megs - however the link for the ESE81Update in the Droid-life video is only 68.95megs?? Why the huge size difference?? Which would i use?

thanks for any help/clarification.

I don't know why there is a size difference.

  • I created this thread.
  • The place I linked the files to I worried about those files being available in the future.
  • I downloaded and followed my instructions successfully in post 20 for the first time.
  • I then uploaded those files to the rescue site where they now reside.
  • I replaced the original links in post 1 to point to the newly uploaded files I tested with.
  • The same files have been there since 4-26-10.
  • Lots of people have successfully used them since that time.
Your choice:)

I'm sure the smaller files work but won't replace the existing file unless I personally try the files. If I can grab a file half the size and replace the larger one that makes sense but I need 45 minutes to go through the same cycle I did in post 20 again. Thanks for the heads up.

Thank YOU for doing all this. I am up to the step of installing the update.zip but just got curious about the file sizes. I did that because i started the process on one computer (downloaded all files from your links) and then when it came time to install update.zip i was someplace else and was watching the video - so i downloaded his link. thats when i noticed the size difference. Even in his video you can see it says 69 megs. So i started thinking i was doing something wrong. :-)

I was wondering the exact same thing....

I have the 141MB file downloaded, but not yet installed. I figure with the wipe, I will have to go through and reinstall all apps and arrange all shortcuts in the folders. And that will take a while. I do have all my apps backed up using Astro, so hopefully that will speed up things. In short, I need to save the last step for another day, maybe this weekend.

Let me know how it goes with the 141MB file version...

I was waiting to see as it sounded like he was going to download and test the other file. i have both downloaded and ready to go - just not sure what each one does as they both say they are same thing but one is twice the size??

Yard work and dinner tonight, paintball all day tomorrow, more yardwork after that for Sunday (put in a retaining wall last weekend and need to backfill behind it now) so I won't be doing it "soon" :)

The file works though. I tested it, uploaded it, and as mentioned many others have used it. The other one most likely works too, because if it didn't lots of folks would be complaining it was no good that came before you :icon_eek:

fire away when ready, everything will be fine.
