SBF to root and to unroot

You have to do box 1-2-3-4 and then you will have a rooted 2.1 phone. I did same thing and from that i have gone crazy trying different Rom's (after buying Rom Manager in Market). I am currently running Bugless Beast and love it.

Will box 1-2-3-4 'downgrade' my firmware to 2.0.1?

No you will have a rooted 2.1

The SPF to root basically wipes your phone and installs the basic 2.1 rom but with root added.

Yes.

I recommend reading through the instructions several times and watching the video he links to several times to be sure. It really is as easy as it sounds when you go step by step.

I'm sure there are more experienced on here than me with this - but i do know how easy it was once i got started.

Once rooted you can find a kernel to install (links all over the place to download and how to install) to be able to over clock. Thats all i did at first - root so i could over clock. Then i got greedy. dancedroid

I also installed SetCPU so i could choose how fast the cpu was running. so even though i installed a 1mhz kernel - i started slow and worked up over the course of a few days to see how hot my phone got. (With setcpu you can tell it "max" speed so i gradually increased this max speed until i was running at 1mhz). Some run faster - but this is plenty fast for me.

Thanks man. Will do it when I go home today.

Also, do you lose your contacts by doing this? Should I save them?

Your contacts will be saved on your google account. They will sync back with you phone

Your contacts, email and calendar are stored on Google servers - not just your phone. So they are automatically backed up. Things like call logs, favorites, text message history and such are lost. There are ways to back them up but i did not care to. maybe others can chime in on how to do that.

Once you reboot into your new rooted phone - you will need to activate it like it is new. Dont worry - super simple. It walks you through the process and takes all of 2-3 minutes. i have done it several times now. lol.

Your apps are not automatically backed up or restored either. So you may want to back them up. I use Astro File Manager. It has a tool to back up Apps to SD card and works great. Then once your back up and running - you can go to market - download astro again - and then do a restore. It will find all your apps on SD card. Again - may be an easier way - but this works for me.

Good luck. dont worry - plenty of people on here to help. :)

I thought I'd put something together on SBF and rooting. Any and all feedback is welcome.

If you are not interested in changing your stock rom but would like to customize your phone by applying some themes, use wifi-tethering, or overclocking then you will need to root. You can do so and keep the stock 2.1 build by flashing this special rom created by Pete of Bugless Beast fame.
(box option 04)

Chris: That file is a complete 138MB ROM replacement. A slightly easier version would be the simple update.zip I put together to apply Root access to a 2.1 unrooted phone. Found here:
20100429h_update.zip

after applied:

Reboot phone into normal mode and open terminal emulator (you can download one for free from the android market if you haven't already. I use "Android Terminal Emulator" but you could us a different one I assume)

type "su" (no quotes)

a popup should show up asking for root/su permissions
click on the checkbox
click on allow should get a # cursor
run the next two commands Code:

cd /system/busy

sh install-busybox.sh

For my complete how to root your stock 2.1 phone go here:
How-To Root your stock 2.1 Droid

but your guide is good and does work but a complete 138MB update.zip is not necessary, and would save allot of bandwidth...

Okay I did Box Option 1-2-3-4 and it appears my Droid is now 2.1 rooted.

For some reason the application "Terminal Emulator" does not work. Does anyone have any ideas why or how I can fix it?

Also, if I want to install Bugless Beast, do I have to go Box Option #5 or can it be done with just Box Option 1-4?

Thanks.

I have never used Terminal Emulator so i cant help there. If you go to the Bugless Beast thread there will be help there to install it.

I downloaded Rom Manager from market (paid app) and then with that installed BB. Doing it that way you have to flash ClockworkMod Recovery - just another backup utility different than SPRecovery. (It comes with Rom manager). From Rom Manager you can backup your current settings and Rom and try new ones. If you dont like them it will restore back to your backup including all apps and screen settings. Very easy to use. I have tried 3-4 different ROms and for me BB works great. I have read on here alot and it seems different roms can work differently for different Droids. So another Rom may work better for you.

Good luck.

Thanks for all the help (I know it's annoying helping new guys).

So I all I have to do is follow the BB install directions?

I don't have to go back to 2.01 or uninstall any of the box options 1 to 4?

Also can you link me to the BB thread since there are a million of them?

http://www.droidforums.net/forum/bugless/47544-rom-bugless-beast-v1-1-a.html

That is the most recent BB V1.1. And it sounds like you install it the same way as box option #4 (the update.zip way).

That is the brand new version 1.1 - i dont even have that yet (Thanks for letting me know it is out lol).

You would have to ask others about the update.zip way. I can only guess- but i "think" you would download this file - rename to update.zip. make sure it is in your root directory of your sd card. Boot into sprecovery and select install update.zip or such. Not sure of wording since i dont use it anymore. Be sure to select allow install from update.zip - it seems weird to have to do that but you do. THEN click install. Again - there are threads out there detailing the process for sprecovery and they are the same for all installs using the update.zip way.

With Rom manager - you dont have to rename or have in root directory. You just navigate to the file and chose install. Either works fine.

No worries on questions - i had tons also before i started. This forum is very helpful. And if you get stuck - you can go to the "rescue squad" thread and they will help much more than i can.

Thanks, someone else pointed out it is larger than the one in the video. I wanted to apply the smaller one before updating the link but haven't had time. I wanted to try the one you put together too because that is even smaller and gives the same results.

Once SPRcovery is installed you can install bugless beast. No uninstall or other steps in this thread's first post are needed. Just follow the BB install directions.

You downloaded "Android Terminal Emulator" from the market? Once installed it is called just "Terminal Emulator".

You say it doesn't work but more details would help. It doesn't start? The slide out keyboard keys do nothing? (their is no touchscreen keyboard for it with moto-droid). Or when you type su nothing happens?
