SBF to root and to unroot

okay so i finally rooted, made a nandroid back up and installed rom manager so.......now what?

To me, having root is more than just saying it is done. It's about the freedom to utilize something you payed good money for to use it at its full potential. Not being limited to the control that you've been "allowed" to have by some mindless rung on a corporate ladder. That's why Linux as an OS has the allure it does with me. If I want to OC my phone, I can and I have. If I want to install a program or uninstall a program with root privilege, I can and I have. I have installed ROMs that have been written or rather rewritten by brilliant people who have the same love for freedom that I have and do a beautiful job of it.

"Root" is what YOU make of it, what YOU want out of it, and what YOU deserve if you so desire. Now, go and enjoy more cell phone freedom than you've ever known. LOL

Alright - I'm about ready to bite the bullet and finally root to enjoy what my droid really can do. I'm sitting at 2.1 stock right now. Is the guide in the OP the one I want to follow? I'm pretty nervous about doing this, but can't say no to the pretty themes ;)

The OP is a good easy guide to follow. But follow it to the letter, don't take short cuts and be comfortably sure that each step has been completed properly. It will help insure you won't be posting back later or searching through the forums because you bricked your phone.

I personally believe that if I can do it and do it right the first time then anyone can. Be aware however of the dangers of hacking any piece of technology.

Hmm...so I'm following the steps, and when I went to the unzip step, the installation aborted saying no such file or directory. I renamed the zip file to update.zip and just put it in the directory, no specific folder. Any thoughts on what I may have done wrong?

edit; Nevermind....named it update.zip.zip which of course won't work :)

Thx

@rjpear, Clockworkmod's ROM Manager, I like the premium version.

Thanks for the Info.. I got all up and working..but saw a few reviews and heard good things about the Rom Manager so I bought it. Well.. I installed ClockworkMod Recovery Through the Program (The Loader or whatever) and I was then Unable to load Roms through the manager..and it over wrote the SPR recovery deal.. and it wouldn't flash any of the ROM's I had on my SD Card. I attempted a "Reboot into Recovery" and it Rebooted the phone (Took a long time) and brought be back to the Rom I just left. The program did FLASH the Alternate Recovery (SPR) back to the phone..

Is there any Documentation for the Rom Manager out there which would help? I wanna like the program because I just started playing with the Roms and this seems like the fastest way to run through the different flavors...

Clockworkmod requires the phone be put into USB Debugging mode I believe. Other than that it should work just like SPRecovery. Or at least it does on my phone. Google is always your friend, plug it into a search box and see what you find. You still may have to name the file "update" and make sure that's the only one on the root of your SD card. You may also have gotten a ROM that your phone doesn't like or a kernal with the ROM that it doesn't like. You can D/L the ROMs, themes and kernals through ROM Manager but some files still require installation through ClockworkMod recovery just like SPRec. It automates a few of the steps for you though and gives you a list of downloads to sift through from the interface.

I got Mod Manager/Clockwork to work by Uninstalling and reinstalling.. Magic...

One thing I couldn't figure out..Is Reinstalling from Backup from the Boot Menu.. If it's even possible. Seems its looking only for the update.zip. I fubar'ed an install and wanted to go to a backup.. I had to reinstall Modmanager and then restore the backup from there.. Worked but an extra step.. no Biggie..

I'm trying to reset my phone to factory settings so I can turn it in for warranty work.. I've got it back to 2.01 right now but I had a quick question.

From the factory, is holding the POWER button + DPAD UP supposed to load into the Bootloader by default? Or is that something that I installed when I originally rooted/installed BB v0.4? If its not supposed to be there, how do I uninstall it?

That is normal factory config.

Great thanks, looks like I'm good to go

It depends on what you're after. You may want to do some research as to what Nandroid does and apply it to your needs. Here's just one guide that I found with Google.Android Rooted: What is Nandroid Backup?

I always do an advanced backup myself, just because.

I do the same. I've got room so why not do the complete backup. Whenever I've restored I've always wanted to get completely back to where I was. I can always re-grab an app or two if they are missing, but I tend to use Titanium Backup and back up all apps prior to a restore anyways. I don't think I have ever done the simple nandroid backup.
