Swype Android Beta!!

i just really wanna know what's killing my battery. i really can't think of anything else that it could be other than swype. i haven't changed anything else. my sync and background data is always off, phone is stock (no roms, not rooted, etc)

My guess (and it's not totally in fun) is that what is killing your battery is looking for what is killing your battery. I've found, for example, that the screen brightness I happen to set has a tremendous impact on my battery use if I'm actually using my phone.

Sad to say but I've concluded it's almost impossible to isolate the source of battery drain unless I'm willing to do a highly controlled test over many hours. I was reminded of that yesterday when I configured my wife's new droid.

I charged the battery for a couple of hours after receiving the droid. Took it off the charger and began downloading about 35 applications that I knew she would need for the phone. Opened each and examined it briefly to see that each was operating correctly. After a little more than 3 hours, half of her battery remained.

Hey guys, I can't get this to work. I installed the apk (build 5612) and whenever I try to swype a word, nothing shows up and a blue box flashes around the keyboard.

What's the deal? Anyone know how to fix it?

This happened to me when I got the "wrong version" error. I fixed it by switching back to the android keyboard, then switching back to swype. If you have never had it working, I think you are hosed and need to wait for the released version. Swype rocks!

Disable it in settings, then enable it, then switch from using Swype to the Android keyboard and then back to Swype. It should work, I had the same problem.

So I was right! Guess saying again make it work!

Anyone on this thread have the leaked version before the beta? I switched to the Beta and sometimes SWYPE isn't as responsive as the previous version I had. I do not believe I have changed any settings and looking at the beta settings everything looked the same as I had it.

I used the previous "leaked" version for about two months, I think. I've had a similar impression from time to time but it's hard to say. I do know that the beta version is much larger than the earlier leaked version but I'm unsure whether it includes functionality or bug fixes that yields that greater size. The comparison is also undermined by having a different (and larger) set of other apps on Droid now compared to the period when I was using the leaked version of Swype.

All in all, trying to pin down the basis of performance differences on the Droid is very difficult. And not just for Swype. There are so many individual variations even on a single phone (GPS seeking, WiFi seeking, synching, etc.), much less between phones, that trying to make judgments about performance really requires a stopwatch and very careful testing with controls in place. Otherwise, it all comes down to unreliable impressions, imo.

Ok, I can't uninstall that leaked version...or can't remember how I should say lol. In manage applications it doesn't give me an uninstall option. I'm a little hungover, someone give me some help?

Go to Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>Menu>Filter>All. Swype and the Swype Installer should be in the list and "uninstallable."

The leaked version is expired

The leaked version is expired. I don't know if it will even run.

when will swype come out officially? I had the leaked version until it expired but i don't want to do other round of tricks to get this version working. Any idea how long i have to wait?

First - I, too, had the leaked version before I heard about an official beta and the leaked version expired this weeken - bummer big sigh

For those that were too late to sign up for the Beta and have lost their Swype - go here to get a file that fixes a "Wrong Version" error.

This gets you the beta apk and you'll be back up and running.

Now for MY question.... I just installed this official beta today - how long before this expires?

Unfortunately, the thread you cite is chock full of misinformation. Not intentional and understandable given the fact that there was a lot of misinformation in the first few days. However, the facts are as follows.

() Version 5652, not version 5612, is the official, most recent, and correct beta release of Swype.

() Version 5612 works (apparently well), and can be downloaded without going through Swype.

() Version 5652 has a known bug that throws an error when the power is cycled on the Droid. The error may say either "Wrong version" or "Trial has expired." The workaround is to select the Android keyboard as an input method and then select Swype as the input method. Once you've done that, Swype will work fine until you turn the power off and back on. Repeat the procedure at that time. The exact instructions are buried somewhere on this and other threads.

() If you signed up for the beta version and don't have Version 5652 and want it, you can request another download from the Swype website.

() If you did not sign up for the Beta, it is now closed (at least temporarily). If you want to run the Swype keyboard your only option is Version 5612.

And to answer your question, there is no telling how long either 5652 or 5612 will last. I suspect, however, that they are not on a timer.

Apparently the Beta expires in 3 months according to Swype:

"The beta starts on March 5th 2010 and is capped at a limited number of registrants.
This beta version will expire after 3 months as we will provide periodic updated versions that will include new features and functionality."
