The camera sucks

Sorry, this thread is like 11 pages long. Didn't want to go through all of that. You might want to consider updating the main post so others like me would notice? Not being rude, just suggestion.

I'll see if I can find your other comparison.

Ha! Check the first post... already done. :icon_ banana:

Ok, I looked at your new images. There is definitely a difference when you zoom in on the printing on that box. You also said after that post that the 13 or so shtos you took did not focus (red corners) correct?

Assuming that is what you mean, the camera is still not focusing correctly then? Hmm... Maybe I should go checkout my phone in some situations and see what my results are.

On the clicking issue, I got a replacement and it still clicks during startup/focus. This is probably how its suppose to be, with the exception of the software bug causing it not to focus correctly using the hardware. My guess is that some people don't notice it. You have to be in a quiet room to notice the clicking. I'm sure the picture grain/noise can be fixed with software, its just a matter of it they will release an update to deal with that.

I'm hoping that since this is a "flagship android phone" for Verizon, with the good background of google, that we will get a much needed update which addresses these issues sometime soon, rather than years or never.

camera update will fix the shutter speed/focusing issues, but i don't see it fixing the noise... time will tell. 12/11 sounds like it's going to be a good day for DROID owners.

Actually it may be able to fix it to some extent…
Image is converted from RAW to JPG and converting algorithm may vary greatly, hence the results may vary. Camera companies put a lot of effort in developing their image engines.
But still, you are right, when 5MP is jammed into puny little sensor – noise will always be a problem.

Has anyone tried to take a pic of their Christmas Tree yet? Prepare for more disappointment! My camera seems to work "okay" most of the time, but tonight I took a photo of my tree, and well, I'll post the photo and you can see for yourself.

maybe you just suck at taking pics? what are your settings on?

I am in the same boat as you. Simple pictures blurry inside outside doesnt matter by the time i change setting the moment is long gone. And yes I wiped the lens clean with a soft cloth each time i took a picture.

Hopefully 12/11 does the trick

i bet i know what your problem is. the biggest problem with the camera (other than its lack of focus) is that it gives you a false impression of the picture it just took. when you take a picture, the phone does three things:

1. it pauses the image on the screen (useless).
2. it releases the shutter.
3. it displays the image you just took (different from the image you just saw).

if you always wait for the 2nd image to appear, you won't have pictures like the ones you took. those images that you attached are dead on with moving the camera mid snap.

Those two pics that were just posted is a good example. High clarity and looks very good with plenty of good strong daylight.
But the nightime shot Im sure was much easier to see in real life... so much was missed.

And its true, some people struggle with a small camera as its easy to move in the act of pushing the button causing a blur.

The droid has a slight delay when using the button on the side of the phone and is instant if using the one on the screen. And the one on the screen responds with a very light touch.. so I really like it better for catching the moment.

Getting low light pics to not blur is more of a challenge as the camera attempts to slow the shutter speed to capture more light.

I dont know if firmware can fix this.. but common sense says it simply needs a bigger aperture to let in more light to give more latitude for faster shutter speeds during low light conditions as well as wider aperture to let more light in for better visibility in general.

thats one feature I was looking forward to with the Omnia 2 as it appeared to have a real size lens.

Smaller lenses require more advanced electronics to capture and make due with the limited light.... We will see.

The manufacturer always has to make a decision.. do you spend money on the lens or the electronics... or neither?

what makes me nervous is motorolla is a new player in the game of making decent cameras... this is where LG has strength.

i waited months for the O2 to come out and wanted to completely ignore the DROID. i'm so over WinMo, it's not even funny. there are some features i miss with WinMo (like codec support) but i haven't exactly given up on life because of it.

to your point, here's similar photos taken with the DROID and a DSLR for side-by-side comparisons:

btw, these pics were both taken indoors, from behind glass, in a restaurant, around 6:00p.

Talk about a dirty keyboard, lol.
This was just taken of my brother's macbook in my room, no lights on, blinds shut, with macro focus on. I don't remember whether I got a green corners or the red corners. Maybe I should pay more attention next time :P.

When I go out I'll take another picture out in the light. Overall, the camera isn't bad at all and impressed me for a cell phone camera.

What do you mean by waiting for the 2nd image to appear? For me by the time it appears its not the picture I was intending to take. Thats my problem I am getting a false picture on the screen and then the final results are blurry etc..

Thanks for any help!!!

then you're not paying attention. lol. like i said, it first pauses the image, then it snaps the pic. this is obvious when you use the flash. the first image will be dark, the 2nd, lit by a flash.

it will take some practice, but if you wait until the image is no longer paused and is live agian, you'll notice a difference in your picture taking abilities.

Honestly what your are saying doesnt make sense and I appreciate the help!! I do!!

I press the shutter half way to get the focus get four green bars most of the time then press the shutter full get a picture in the screen that I want but what happens is the 2nd image is the final result that I dont think I have any control over after I press a full shutter button? What am I missing?

thanks

the 2nd image that you feel like you don't have any control over is because you're not waiting for the 2nd image. you need to continue to NOT move even after the shutter clicks.

like i said, you just need to practice.

if you use the action setting, you're in infinite focus and you'll run into blurry shots less often. here are some example photos i took with my DROID at a football game. the crowd is always moving, so this should show you that it's you and not the camera (well technically it's the camera, but you need to learn how it operates):
