The "Got my D3"/ first impressions thread

My OD running GB doesn't have redraws, not since 2.3.4.,
D3 has twice the RAM, why should it have that problem?
Is it just coming from camera?
Maybe it's the camera app?
Sent from my Droid using DroidForums

Thats what i'm sayin. Shouldn't even phase it coming from the camera. It may have had something to do with the Launcher i was using. I was using Launcher Pro.. it autoloaded when i synced up. So I went with it. I removed it for now to see how the stock launcher runs. I might try that Zeam launcher mentioned earlier too.

Launcher pro here as well, and I can also confirm that the only icon redraw I've got is coming from the camera. I'm just too used to launcher pro to switch back over the icon issue, as long as that REMAINS the only issue hehe. Launcher pro may have a harder time staying persistent in memory than stock does, and I'm guessing the camera really hijacks the system when it runs.

So, if you actually insert an sdcard, it gets mounted as sdcard-ext, and apps that normally talk to a mounted sdcard, do not see it. So you will have to treat it as raw storage for now it looks like.

is there a fix or workaround for this?? this may be a deal breaker and make me resend it...
mostof my apps had their settings and stuff backed up on SD card... if i cant get that back that would SUCK!

In Settings / Storage Settings / Storage location you can choose between internal storage and SD card. In Astro, I see a sdcard mounted and sdcard-ext. We can surmise that sdcard is a faux sdcard created in internal storage because the phone ships without a real one and has oodles of internal storage. I suppose GB assumes an SD card so Moto had to fake it.

I don't claim to understand how it all works yet, but I think the above-mentioned setting alleviates your primary concern.

Found a neat little thing, on the physical keyboard, when you double tap the alt or shift keys, an led lights up next to them to show that you are in caps/alt mode.

Why does it piss you off? Does it really matter? Just use the internal storage mounted as sdcard as your sdcard, and let sdcard-ext be music and pictures or something. I don't really think it is that big of deal at all. You can simply move what is on your sdcard-ext to sdcard and clear sdcard-ext and you are right back to where you were....

Check my post a few posts up. Let me know if that allows you to do what you're trying to do?
i tried that but it didnt seem to change anything, i still have to navigate to my sd card to access all of my things in it

I had the same problem for the short time I had the X2. I looked everywhere and spoke with a vz rep I trust and he said that for the time being there was nothing that could be done. When I transferred apps from sd-ext to sd, I had to put the actual apk file in the corresponding file in order to make it work (ie I couldn't just move everything over bulk style). It's a little disappointing to see the same thing here.

If it's the same as the X2 it's only media that can be used on the sd card.

The mapping works better for trouble free sdcard hot swapping and better prepared set up for Ice cream, or whatever the next major update is called.

This phone is going to be stupendous when all the bloat can be nuked.

Launcher Pro versus Stock Launcher.
Man I REALLY wish I could adequately run Launcher Pro because the phone runs much faster with LP, BUT some of the widgets that Moto includes will not run properly on LP, and some of those widgets are REALLY nice. Like the Quick Contact widget. That is my personal favorite.

With the stock launcher I SOMETIMES notice a slight delay (honestly maybe like a half second versus instant for LP) when returning to the homescreens (which does not happen at all with the speedy LP), but the Moto widgets are so nice that it makes the stock launcher worth it. And the stock launcher is really stylish, nice screen transitions, a cool screens preview, but just simply is not as fast or customize-able as LP. If LP would come out with the ability to run some of these gorgeous widgets I'd be in Heaven. The stock launcher also does a cute lighting effect when you change screen, a subtle touch that just makes you feel good about yourself. If the stock launcher's code would improve a smidgen, and offer the ability to scroll vertically (instead of swiping side to side like a cotton picking i*hone) through the app drawer then we'd have a surefire winner.

Also, in terms of battery, I've used it the same as D1 (I think, because I was trying to intentionally use it as much to compare) and the phone has been off the hook for 6 hours and it's at 60%. Doesn't seem to compete with the D1 on GPA15 and the 0.3 kernel by Pete (Pete!!! Please get a D3 and work us up some AOSP goodness!!!), a setup that would last for about 24 hours even with heavy use.

Bloatware is upsetting. There is crap on here waking up and filling itself in memory that I've never even heard of. "Social Status?" Seriously??? Maybe cool for a chick, but for DUDES, let us get that garbage off. Do I need a widget to update my FB status every 5 seconds??? Uhhhhhhh.... Unreal, hundreds of megs of crapware, oceans of it really. The sooner we can get some sort of root access to get Tibu on here the better, and the better this phone will run, you know, assuming it's be loading up apps you ACTUALLY USE into memory to make the apps you ACTUALLY USE quicker to get to. But what do I know, I'm just a random idiot.

One minor omission in terms of widgets is the stock Google News widget. Moto includes a news widget to replace it, which looks better, and has a nifty 3D effect, but you can't add custom topics like you can on Google's offering. Maybe it'll get updated for custom topics....maybe.

Pentile display looks good. Better contrast and brightness than D1, and the Pentile tech saves battery better than D1. Pixels are juuuuust noticeable though, but only in a psycho-stickler sort of way, and only on certain colors (like pure green). Overall, without squinching your eyes like a maniac, the screen IS an improvement over the D1.

Physical keyboard is a VAST IMPROVEMENT. No more reaching around with thumbs. Keys feel good. Having a number row is the cat's pajamas. Arrow keys instead of rocker is a definite improvement. I sort of miss having the "?" key NOT being an alt, but this is such a minor niggle I can't even believe I mentioned it. Thoroughly loving the physical keyboard. Little tough to get loose, but I'm sure this will improve over time, so I'm not concerned with it. Soft keyboard and swype are great too.

I've only taken one pic, and no videos, but the one pic I did looked really good, and the camera software was intuitive and snappy. Can't tell you how many times I would be out and about and taking pics cause girls are attention whores and my D1 starts locking up and rebooting and coughing and wheezing and generally embarrassing me. Haven't put D3 through the same torture, but I'm anticipating that things will be a lot smoother with the OMAP 4430 governing things.

I actually did notice a small delay/freeze on the stock home launcher....especially when I moved the icons or delted them

I agree on most all of your opinions there except for the statement of the screen having better brightness? Contrast yes but the D3 certainly seems dimmer and washed out next to the D1's screen with a side by side comparison with auto brightness off on both phones.

The news widget can have custom sites and rss feeds, look at the bottom of the add menu.

The keyboard is hands down the best qwerty to be on big red's line up. Though I really like the Epic 4g's qwerty. Real nice gaps between keys. Though the D3 does have a gap between keys, overall it's a huge improvement on qwerty real estate. The best change I see coming from a D1 to the D3 keyboard is the addition of the tab key. THANK GOD! I use teamviewer and logmein all the time and it killed me not having a tab key.

Sleep mode is a nice addition. It certainly will help with conserving on battery but it does kill all radios so really it's a low voltage airplane mode.

One thing that has bugged me is that Motorola has chosen block any self signed certificates with Activesync. Which will make me have to go get a cert from Go daddy. But damn on the D1 I was able to disable certificate verification.

The camera shutter is certainly faster than the D1, D2, D2G, DX phones but certainly not to iphone 4's shutter speed but the video quality capture makes up for that.

One thing I wanted to mention is that the /app/data partition is 2 GB large, so if you were thinking you had 16GB for appdata, you're wrong.
10.7GB is partitioned to /sdcard/
and as someone mentioned the actual sd card is mounted to /sdcard-ext/

I've been playing with this and configuring my setup for around 4 hours and I would have to say the 512 ram is a non-issue. I was able to load some HD games, pause, jump to 2-3 other apps then returned to the HD game without a hitch. I can't wait for root, It will be ez cakes to get this thing running flawlessly. Though while changing some memory settings for LP I did experience a crash and reboot but nothing since. I certainly have to hand it to Motorola with the latest blur. It does include some nice features and is definitely MUCH less annoying than earlier versions. One of the best functions they added was a search function for exchange email boxes. Thank God again!

The construction of the phone is great, except for the slider hinges. I have a feeling I will have the same issue I had with the D1 after a little while where you close your phone and it does click shut but is generally loose, meaning the screen could pivot side to side causing unnecessary wake ups and battery drain. I'm a little annoying on how hard it is to change the volume when you have the keyboard extended and you reach behind the screen to only have a hard time trying to push this button that is really close to the backside of the screen.
