The "New" New Phone Rumor Mill

Yeah.... I just caught that... I'm 99% sure it said 4.3 and they corrected it or I shouldn't be posting before 9am.

Either way, I'm happier now.

Edit: After looking in the comments on the source article, there are other people pointing out the 4.3" screen size, so it must be a corrected mistake and I'm not crazy!

Is the screen curved at all? I can't really tell from the photo.

It's tough to tell, but the way the reflection of florescent tube lights bend at the edge of the screen would make me think there was at least a little "bubble out" to the screen near the edge...

Haha, I called it. I knew there would be some sort of a leak today. Hopefully a few more pics will pop up after the press event today.

That's what I *think* I see too. I would like this to be true. I don't like the generic slate look some phones have. A little unique quality would suite the Prime well.

New phone for your list... it's the iPhone 4S. Sure it's already behind the Galaxy SII, barely an improvement from the iPhone 4, lacks LTE (or even fake 4G from AT&T), and the Vigor/Prime will be kicking down the doors and setting a new standard within the next two weeks... but everyone needs a generic mid-level phone to look forward to right? "Butt itz haz tha frootz!"

In case someone misses the sarcasm... this isn't really for the list..

I'm with ya. This is the first time I have ever really followed one of these events live, but I was surprised how many shots they took directly at other phones on the market.

Also, I am definitly no telecommunications expert, but I'm not sure how increasing hardware in the phone can increase a networks throughput capability. They claim the phone will be able to achieve "4G" like speeds on a 3g data connection. A couple quotes I caught were "Theoretical download speeds are now twice, 14.4Mbps versus 7.2 on the iPhone 4" and "Mr. Schiller is saying that the speed bump the 4S gets from the new chip makes it competitive with devices that can use faster 4G wireless networks. " How exactly does that work?

It's basically them trying to blur the line even further in the differences between 3g and 4g.

I wonder if they couldn't fit an LTE chip without altering their form factor or just figured they could tell everyone that it could achieve "4G" like speeds, charge them for a 4G phone and not have to invest in the technology...

Theoretical is the key word. The phone will not get the same DL speeds as an LTE device. It COULD... hardware wise... if it had LTE. But it wont. Just like no 4G LTE phone is getting what LTE is capable of. Eventually maybe. But not right now. The most interesting thing I found in this one (I follow all of these "release" type events) is that they claimed (can't remember who I was watching the live stream) that they had the biggest smartphone OS on the market. EVERY SINGLE analysis I have seen has shown Android at about 57-60%. They claimed they had 47% and Android had 33% (I think). I don't know where they got these numbers unless it was like a monthly snapshot of some sort.

Now to what I quoted you... it has been rumored that a bigger, size or thickness, iPhone will have to be made to accomodate LTE. There are also some people who say that Apple can't figure out the battery life issue either. Probably a combination of both. But if you have even seen a previous Apple event... even if you hate them like I do it's normally a big show with lots of suprises. This first "post-Jobs" event was a MAJOR letdown and their stocks showed it.

And Apple is know for those direct attack comments that you pointed out. Although, if you listen closely, they rarely attack Android or Windows... they stick to attacking Sony, Samsung, HP and other brands that they can make their numbers crush. This way they can say they have the #1 this and the #1 that.

I think they were banking on Siri being a lot bigger of a deal than what (we, at least) are perceiving it to be. It is a cool concept... I mean who doesn't want their own Jarvis... but it still has a long way to go. It will be interesting to see if real world applications are as practical as they made them out to be.
