The Official DF Galaxy Nexus Pre-Release Thread

On the phone with 611 right now...

Asked about the G-Nex (of course) and she said the typical "soon" response. I mentioned I had heard the 15th and she looked up in the system to see if she could confirm but said that it was still unlisted but as soon as the have a date released they will start taking pre-orders (which tells me that they probably won't publicly release a date but just start selling the phones)

Then I asked about the $100 rebate for getting a 4G Smartphone because I still hadn't received anything in the mail. She hadn't heard of it at first, but after looking in the system she found it but said that it was "regional only" promotion, Southwest Region specifically. Being in Oklahoma I qualify and she made a note on my account that I qualify for the rebate so when I go in to buy the Nexus I should get the $100... unless I decide to go with buying at Best Buy haha.

HAHA, I just did the same exact thing. After 10 min on the phone, she came back and said well I am not sure how you heard about that promotion since its a regional promotion only.........So no $100 off for me since I live on the east coast. I guess the economy hasnt affected us enough to get it....BS.

I also called Radioshak and he said they have them and they are just waiting on the OK.

I called BestBuy and the kid there said they dont even have them, so they wont have them until a couple days after the announcement. NOt sue I entirely believe this, but whats his reason for lying? I suppose he just doesnt know what he is talking about though.

Maybe us East Coasters can get it if we claim Regional Discrimination. It's worth a try if you ask me...

This is really random but as this is my first android phone, are there any dangers to rooting/unlocking the bootloader? I mean I hear about bricking and stuff but I don't really know how that happens.

Basically, is there a way to root, rom, and all that without having to worry too much about your brand new, sexy nexus becoming a sexy paper weight?

Question:

New phones like the D3, Bionic, and RAZR have to have a Radio hack to be able to use WiFi tethering. Do you think the GNex will have this too? I'm not sure if its due to the locked bootloader or Verizon just setting something up so they know when you try to use it, to send you to their Mobile Hotspot page.

The kid next door has a Charge and even before he rooted it, he downloaded a widgit from the Market that turned on WI-FI tethering. He uses it all the time.
It would'nt work on my D1, so I use Barnacle from the Maket. We'll see what happens with the Nexus when I get my hands on it...

I dont see why they would have a "regional" promotion only, unless that area is doing poorly with sales, ect.. Im gonna give them a call and see if i can pressure them into giving it to me, hey its worth a shot right?

Post your results I'm in CT. I'd love to get $100 more off of the G-Nex.

If you follow the directions(which are the easiest root method aside from a one-click root program) to a T and grab the files from a trustworthy source then there are virtually no dangers in rooting. Once you get a custom recovery flashed just do a nandroid backup and if you do mess something up 99.99% of the time you can restore using the nandroid backup.

If you're worried about that, get a used D1 to screw around w/ first before you try your unpracticed hand at a Sexy Lexus Nexus. lol

Yeah let us know how it goes, I didnt press the issue to much with the rep, I did ask if there was any promotions for my area and she said no, that was the end of my argument, haha. If i hear some good news from you, I will be happy top call back and put up a better fight.

How does Barnacle work for you? I've had issues w/ the connection getting stale or whatever while streaming Hulu(stock rooted Froyo). On Liquid 3.1, it doesn't work reliably.

Thanks so much, so basically avoid bad websites like I do on a computer :) I hate to burden you again but what exactly is a nandroid backup? Is it easy to do? And lastly, what is a custom recovery? Why can't I just use the default recovery?

Thanks so much for any replies, I know I should know this but even after reading a lot it seems most guides assume one knows what these things are.

Thanks again.

I don't know, $120 is steep for something I could manage without just by stealing info from you knowledgable android junkies :P
