No, I haven't rooted yet. I was going to look into it after getting Froyo OTA. But may as well.

Go to the Market and purchase the full versions of Titanium Backup and ROM Manager. ROM Manager makes it easy to install new ROM's while you get used to the system while also giving you a good place to download.

Use Titanium to back up all of your apps and app data but do NOT back up system data with it.
