Update Radio to Newest Version (does NOT require root)

Well to get the upgrade run the leaked ruu. You'll be all set then. No need to root and unroot.

RUU????? I tried running the Manual OTA and it won't do it since we have an updated radio. What's this RUU you talk of.

I've tried the manual update as well (a couple of times) and it would not work :(

You need to do the RUU, not the update.zip method. Follow the directions on this link. This will wipe your phone so you will need to reinstall apps, settings, etc. but it will put you on the stock 2.2 Froyo with the newest radio.

You don't owe me an apology at all. I wanted to get the OTA (which I got this morning), not the RUU so I had to do what I had to do.

It was no big deal at all and easy to do.

I think that once the OTA is completely out, Unrevoked will release their root for it. I plan on doing that, not to run a custom ROM, but to do little things like changing some stock sounds and unintalling bloatware.

Thanks again Doug for all of your help!

There is no way to go back with a non-rooted phone. You have to root it to go back.
Thanks too much for me, guess I'm off to get a replacement

Omg you can flash an unsupported radio yet complain about the fix???

Well anyways, KerrAvon I owe you an apology, there was a person who just used the new ruu to upgrade without the downgrade. I just found this out today.

So by using the above RUU, will this allow me to get future OTA updates or am I back in the loop again of finding manual ways to get updates - TIA

Same here, so am I to understand that we can't do the manual update and probably won't get the OTA if we have the radio update (unrooted)?
100% correct, i had to root my phone and then roll it back to the older baseband and before it was even done going through the set up, it was pulling in 2.2 for me to install. I will have to fully reinstall all my apps, email, settings.

What system did you use to root. Tried Unrevoked last night and it wouldn't let me.

I used Unrevoked 3 here is the video i followed to get it rooted. The link to the files needed is right under the video on the YouTube page so play it on their page.

Then here is the video I followed to unroot and roll back the radio. Here is the link to the files for the downgrade RapidShare: 1-CLICK Web hosting - Easy Filehosting You will also need to google SDK Tools and download them for your windows machine. Install them but don't update them, just cancel that part. Then move the SDK folder to the root of your C: drive.

From there the OTA popped up right away. This sounds tough, but just follow and pause the videos as you go along, and it really is easy. I did all of it in less than 30 minutes.

Hard to say at this point, I wasn't willing to chance it.

Ok thanks, guess I will wait and see what develops as a solution (other than rooting and un rooting)

RUU is an official HTC method of updating your phone. By no means am I an expert on this but I don't see why future updates woulnd't work using the RUU. The end state that your phone reaches is the same as using the OTA (update.zip). The only difference is the method you used to reach that point. If you don't want to root this is your best bet. Plus, who knows how long it will be until our next update or if we'll even get another update after this. Just my $.02

JayCizzo thanks for the input ;)
The unknown is the killer here, as when I updated my radio last week and kept my DInc unrooted everyone thought it would be ok, and future updates would still come thru, well now we know this isn't the case (hence my creation of a thread asking for help on how to do this) as I do not want to root my phone (but may end up with no choice)
In my mind, the process was relatively simple to update the radio to 2.05, why isn't it as simple to reverse it back to the stock radio format?

I was in the same situation and no matter what I tried I ended up with an error of one kind or another. I tried the YouTube videos etc. and nothing worked for me. Finally I found this discussion: OFFICIAL: update.zip is finally here! :D - Page 12 - xda-developers About half way down the page you will find instructions by ACD168 (10 steps) and a download of Android 2.2. I followed these and everything worked. I have a friend who received the OTA update and I compared software versions (baseband, kernel, build, etc.) - they were identical. The one caveat is that this will clear your phone back to stock. I had backed up all of the stuff on my sd card but I had to re-install my apps, redo all of the settings, etc.

Tried it the first time with the latest version of 2.1 and it still wouldn't let me do it.

So I improvised and downloaded the 2.2 and searched through it. Then followed all the directions listed and it upgraded straight into 2.2

I'm at 2.05 now and the new one is 2.15. Should be fine. Of course, none of us know this 100% but I'd say we're in the 98% ballpark. Sorry I can't say with complete surety.

Unfortunately, the other 2% turned out to be the case. This is a freaking pain. I suppose I should just give up and install some rooted version instead.

I'm truly sorry about the problems. I honestly would recommend the rooted version of the ROM's over the officials. There really are so many more benefits.

There is one other option for help. Buzz over to HTC Incredible Forum. I've got a lot of the heavier users over there and I would bet we have some RS guys there that can help. Primarily, Doug Piston or s197. Those two are on almost all the time and have worked wonders on the phones, especially on problems like this.

Don't worry, we're still attached to DF, we're just the dedicated subforum site.

Jump over there and post the problems again and see if we can't get the resolution you're looking for. Bet we can.

No worries, sorry for sounding grouchy. You provided the best information that was available at the time. Sometimes educated guesses don't work out.

OK, so I've got Android 2.1 and radio 2.05. Which Froyo installer would you recommend as the best and/or easiest? Caveat: I'm on a Mac, so EXEs like at Shipped-ROMs would require extra effort.

Thanks for any info.

Hmmm, are you rooted? I think I saw you were. If you are, I recommend either FrankROM or my favorite now is MIUI. Mimics an iPhone and really cool. But for getting your feet wet, I would say open up with FrankenROM. And rooting with the Mac is VERY easy. I've got a Mac and it is literally plugging the phone in and running Unrevoked.
