Update Radio to Newest Version (does NOT require root)

The reception is fine. There seems to be an issue with the algorithm and the way it shows bars. The db should be about the same.

adb reboot ???

Umm... the directions on MyDroidWorld talk about "adb reboot recovery" and "go to the bootloader" but don't explain how.

Wandering around Google, it seems like I'm supposed to install the Android SDK on my computer, activate USB debugging on my phone, plug them together, and feed shell commands to it.

Is that right?

No, you don't need the SDK. You turn the phone off, then press the power and down volume at the same time. When that menu comes up, go down to recovery. Next a pic of a radio with a red triangle will come up. Press power and up.volume. Select load from SD card. Then it will find the update zip file you put on there and complete the process.

Other Perks with Baseband Update

I was successfully able to get it to work this morning.

I did notice a couple of nice additions:

Amazon MP3 widget
A "proper" boot screen...DROOOIDD
And most importantly for me...WIFI HOTSPOT.

And I actually noticed BETTER reception. My SpeedTest results were:

1157KB Down, 826KB up...and I live in a rather RURAL part of AZ.

Under the previous baseband, those numbers would be closer to matching. I would post those results, but I UNROOTED in anticipation of the upcoming FroYo...

some questions:

1. if I apply this update, would there be any reason to need to downgrade the radio?

2. if there is a reason to downgrade the radio, is it an easy process?

3. if I apply this update, can I later root/install custom ROM?

Interested

I am interested in doing this but I have a couple of concerns.

1) Why was this update stopped by Verizon? Was there an problem discovered with it?
2) I want to make sure this will NOT prevent me from receiving 2.2 when it is officially released.
3) Does it fix the darned Charging Problem. I am tired of having to play the game every morning to get my phone fully charged.

Thanks.

@jkhonea Do you have any recollection as to the time frame it took your device to get past the "htc Incredible" splash screen (boot) after the update was applied?

I am pretty familiar with this process and followed the directions to a "T", phone took the patch, rebooted twice without my interactions and has been sitting at the htc screen for over 15 minutes. Everything appeared to have worked correctly...until now.

If you or anyone else would have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them. I am beginning to feel sick about a brick and I don't want to pull the battery just yet.

** Update**
For those that care...yes, my phone did become a brick. I am sure that this is a rare instance but I did chat with a few fellows over at IncredibleRoms. They indicated that they thought this particular upgrade was "risky" and not that great (radio only). Of course they recommended the 2.15 which requires rooting [something I didn't want to do - should have].
For those of you asking...yes, I followed the instructions to the "T", used a battery and cable, yadda, yadda...It just happened to be the one in a [however many] that becomes a brick.
Good luck.

For whatever reason, they pulled it and decided to tie it in with Froyo with another slightly newer radio again. There was never any indication of a problem with the files, just that VZW basically changed their mind. None of us know 100% that it won't cause any OTA problems, but I would say we are in the 99% range. Especially since a select group did get the radio update before and they weren't pulled back. Basically, as long as the radio is newer, should be completely fine.

I've had no errors with mine, whatsoever. That being said, these are electronics, so God only knows. ;)

Sorry, I was out all morning. Did you ever get this resolved? Think it was only about 15 minutes on mine.

Radio Update

I am wondering if i try this and update my radio version, will the OTA still come to my DInc? Also i have heard if you try to change the radio more than once you get a brick.

I am not up for rooting my phone but i am also tired of waiting for VZ to get on the ball. So i am hoping that i can update the radio, then update to Froyo whenever that is, without an issue.

Anyone have any ideas? I know that no one knows for sure until we do finally get the OTA, but your thoughts would be appreciated.

From my understanding, the issue with radios is if you make the mistake of loading the same radio over the other. I'm at 2.05 now and the new one is 2.15. Should be fine. Of course, none of us know this 100% but I'd say we're in the 98% ballpark. Sorry I can't say with complete surety.

when i tried to do this i got an error. it said that the update.zip file or extension did not exist and the installation was aborted. does anyone have any suggestions? all help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you rename it update or update.zip? If you renamed it update.zip in Windows, it actually renamed the file update.zip.zip. It adds the extension automatically. Check that first and foremost.

yeah i actually tried both renaming it update and update.zip, tried it with all caps and all lowercase and with just capital u. i dont know what i did wrong.

Make sure its on the root of the sd card. Not in another folder. Also make sure the file you've dl'd is not a file in a folder.
