[Update] Verizon's New Family Data Plans Begin: It's Called the Share Everything Plan

wait, so since I have a 3G right now, even if I were to buy a 4G phone at full price I would have to change plans?

No, the poster above is clueless, 3G/4G makes no difference to Verizon, trust me, just call them, they will tell you what I just did.

If I start buying phones (new or used) from someone other than VZW, how will my insurance work? I'm thinking just cancel that waste of money and save myself $8/month. $200 over 2 years, which isn't far off what the subsidy would have been.

It's almost an independent choice, but I'm just wondering if I ax the insurance if they will nail me on a plan change. I don't believe so, but hopefully someone knows.

Without paying outright for a phone, they take the retail price and break it out over 20 months, giving you the option to "pay it off" early if you want.

This gives me an idea. You could use like a Best Buy credit card. 6 months on $149 and up, or 18 months on $429 and up. Other stores/sites have similar programs, but BB's hit me first.

So, technically you can keep your existing plan, and make monthly payments (up to 18 months) on a device. Without outright paying for it.

this new pricing structure is ridiculous... do they think we're idiots? by throwing unlimited talk and text at us they think they can convince us that their data prices are justified?... unlimited texts now a days are almost useless since we can use apps like kakao talk... ebuddy.. etc..

i work at a MetroPCS/Boost/Virgin Mobile store and i get on average at least 2-3 people a day either breaking or leaving their verizon contract... granted these prepaid companies coverage and speed isnt the best... but it seems like people are more than willing to give up their contracts to stop getting bent over the railing by their contract companies... im thinking once these new prices go live and public ill be getting more people switching from their contract to prepaid

i ordered my S3 last week so im good for another 2yrs with my unl data... but im strongly considering a different company after my contact is up

Hehe, so you think in two years time the other carriers will not do the same if not sooner, that's the problem with today's World, no one looks one block ahead, it's all about the now, reason we are all in this big mess.

Part of the problem with such published and transparent prices is it facilitates tacit collusion. I'm shocked by these plans. If the other carriers follow suit I'd expect the FCC and FTC to investigate price gouging. And note I've never accused VZW of price gouging before.

Insurance has nothing to do with your plan, you can keep it or toss it, regardless if you buy or upgrade your device.

I really think the way to go from here on out is getting a $400 GSM GNex and going prepaid. For $70, I can just about get everything (unlimited voice, messaging, 5gb of unthrottled speed). This way leaving would he a breeze if they try to screw me. I might go that route eventually. I love the thought if freedom. For now, ill look for another phone on Craigslist and hopefully pick up a gnex for cheap and use that till my contract runs out.

Its a shame, I really wanted the GS3, but I can't justify resigning if this is how its going to be from now on.

I don't think you get it, its a business decision for the company. Who do you think is going to pay for the build out of the network? Because VZW is using CDMA for 3G its costing them an arm and a leg maintaining the legacy system thats supporting a majority of the data users and all of the talk/text users. They want to weed out the 3G net ASAP so they can repurpose it and free up spectrum.

The FCC and FTC are clueless, you think they could make a difference.

Regulatory agencies investigate price fixing claims all the time. They maybe don't pop the big boys very often, but the big stick they have in this case is additional spectrum the carriers are anxious to get their hands on.

Verizon has discovered that both voice and text are no longer reliable revenue streams. People don't talk much and when they get unlimited text, they don't get the pay per text money. (Don't get me started about how text is a great money generator because they must have 160 characters in the frame so all they do is stuff the text. Different discussion, I digress.) So if they raise the price on everybody then gouge for data they can grow their revenue, short term anyway.

How long before other carriers follow?
Can you imagine how bad it would be if AT&T had been allowed to buy T-Mobile?

I have a killer plan and I'll stay with big red until they piss me off. Then I'll be on Virgin Pre-Pay.

Hey! I just figured out Verizon's inspiration for the name of this new plan. They call it the "Share Everything Plan" because it is their plan to have us share all our money with them! :money:

Sometimes I wonder whether or not people read my posts :icon_ devil:

Here is the conundrum for you  More government involvement or less of them?

You sounded like Kodiak799 before all this new news spread :rofl2:I don't get this logic whatsoever sorry. It is not business decision for a well established company. It is always depended on its leader who sometimes be gold and sometimes be rotten like the one leads Verizon right now. Verizon are still reaping profits to maintain or renew its towers, and what the current CEO that so similar to what Netflix did is Milking the well-established company out! Which is better for you 1000+ jobs lost due to this guy or better kick this one guy out and save thousands? We all know what happened when CEO retracted their mistakes as well (netflix)? We are so unforgiving at many times .

I think most of you simply don't get it.

Verizon makes the rules.

The only thing Verizon must do - is to honor existing contracts.
If you had unlimited data on a two year contract, then once the contract has expired Verizon has no obligation to honor the old contract - no obligation at all.

Verizon could declare that everyone with umlimited-Data now only have 2GB/month effective immediately.

I think the only reason Verizon honors old contracts is that they want customers to stay sleepy.
Most people are busy and don't want to change anything.
Once there is a change forced upon them, they will tend to comparison shop - and Verizon might lose customers.
So Verizon tends to let expired contracts keep going at the same price/term.
But, Verizon does not have to do this.

BTW, my family (2 iphones @2GB/each, one Rezound@4GB, and 1 flip phone) does not have unlimited data, and if we moved to the new plan there would be very little difference in cost. We'd all have 2GB each, unlimited calling versus shared 700 minutes, and continue to have unlimited texting. It would be nice to not ever worry about talking too much. So, I do not see this affecting me much.

Bottom line - Verizon is curtailing/ending unlimited data.
Get used to it or go find another cell phone company to do business with.

Howard
