[Updated] Verizon Plans To Eliminate 'Grandfathered' 3G Unlimited Data Plans

Sorry to hear that you lost your phone to a petty theft  especially in your situation. Verizon are trying to hassle and confused their consumer about differentiating 3G and 4G :icon_eek:. Tbh that is the response you get, when you call these "at times" unhelpful reps that focus on selling you products. All can be done via internet by accessing your phone numbers yada yada yada.... From there you can ask Verizon to block your IMEI in case your phone been stolen. You can also change phone from 3G and 4G easily from there too. You can buy your rezound or any 4G Lte phones from Ebay and keep your Unlimited Data. Please ensure that the phone listed as Clean ESN with preferably huge positive feedback seller. Once you get your phone, you can go to store and ask them to give you 4G LTE simcard for the specific phone. You can activate your phone in store or go back home and do it online. Good luck!

Will they charge me for the SIM card? Will a 4GLTE phone not come with one or does each person have to get a new one. I always associated SIM cards with the GSM technology (ie not VZW) so I really need to learn this...especially if I'm gonna buy a used phone. I know it needs a clean ESN/MEIN but didn't realize about the SIM card.

Just as an aside, what can they do with an essentially bricked device that can't be activated? What's the point other than causing us pain, frustration and funds that we don't have.

1. It's a sim card lookalike but it's essentially used for accessing their encrypted 4G towers. No, they wouldn't charge you for it lol... they are happy to give it to a paying customer :). Sim card is unique from one another. So even though it comes with the phone when you purchase it from 3rd party web, you still need to get fresh sim card from Verizon.

2. Desperate people what-can-ya-do. There are many safety reasons behind a lost phone tho. You can use it as MP3/vid player, he/she may have access to your private emails, online bankings, or cache from your browser history, your home address from GPS, and etc.

Yeah, I'm somewhat concerned about the stuff on the phone but we didn't have everything installed and none of the banking apps or anything like that. Anything like that is on my phone. So I'm looking for a security app that will work with Google Voice as the SMS ASAP. Ugh, it's amazing how violating it feels to have something like that taken and the fact that it was a present just makes it worse. And, with my current health issues, we just didn't need the extra aggro right now, you know? I know I've gotta just let it go but it's still painful, frustrating and reminds me of what a crappy place the world so often is. And this is minor compared to the many horrors that go on. I know, jovial post, right?

Sorry I didn't mean to aggravate your mind as you've been dealing with other things that I believe more important to tend to. It is understandable and really good to let your steam out of your system :). This may sound cliche but as long as you're ok and have income week in week out... everything replaceable (as pain in the bum as it may take to get there).

Yes so hopefully her phone was protected buy a password, numeric codes work the best or even the pattern. That's a little protection. If they get past that however they deserve Your phone lol.

This kind of falls under the same topic..
2 people in the house are wanting to get androids of some sort, both currently have some money left on their pre-paid phones. Should I go ahead and add new lines now, or wait and see about the shared data? Neither of them will use much data at all, in fact the one is in his 70's and just wants the larger screen. :icon_eek:

Depends on how much data you use. I'm almost always on wifi and have never hit 1 GB of data. If you are like me then I would wait and get a family share plan. I would give up my unlimited if the share plans are reasonable. Not using data is why my wife got rid of her smartphone and went back to my old enV and a Samsung 4.0 mini tablet. She will likely get a new smartphone if the share plan is cost effective for us.

No comment... :) There are ways to bypass those securities anyways :p, but since I had my phone stolen (basic phone tho luckily :happy3:)a too before... I hope that person rot in .... :icon_ lala:

I'm not telling you what to do ... this is purely IMO.

1. If you add new lines to your Verizon account, no matter what you do, you'll will fall under their tiered data plan. No need to fight what will Verizon do in the future as you are not under Unlimited data anyways... just go with the flow even when their family share data comes up later on. I believe they are currently doing double the data promo.

2. All depends on your location, but earlier in this thread there was a link about T-Mobile prepaid plan that deserve some consideration. Since I believe that the 70 year old person don't care much about data usages, this should benefit someone in your plan that might use lots of data when Family share data plan happens. You will get the excellent network from Verizon by just adding $10 :icon_ lala:.

All in All though... I hope Family Share Data Plan doesn't happen so I can keep my darn Unlimited Data plan :p :rofl2: and get to buy subsidized phone forever. Since they said this could happen in the summer... I guess you can wait (unless it's emergency)? Again depends on your other Tiered Data phones in your plan and when your contract will expire.

I bought my bionic off ebay so I still have unlimited when I was getting it activated. They kept asking me where I got it I was like not from u a-holes. I think I'm OK tho.there pumping those upgrade. Commercials hard here

Sorry to hear about the lost/stolen phone this happened to a friend of mine's iphone recently (at the hospital).

A good reminder to put wheres my droid app on your phone, to assist locating and even locking/wiping phone if you can recover it!

GL with finding a replacement!

On a side note, I hope someone forwards this forum link to a VZW exec. they might be shocked at how many may leave VZW! You might think well only a dozen have said they will leave, but if you have ever participated in any kind of research group the average responder speaks for 1000 or more other consumers!

There's no nice way to say this:
Verizon has around 100,000,000 customers. They have the biggest 4G network and the best reputation for call quality. They're they 800-pound gorilla that can do whatever it wants.
I'm not defending them, just saying: They've already decided on the fate of Unlimited Data and Shared Data.. I don't know how many customers would have to switch--not just threaten to, but actually switch--for them to care or even notice, but IMHO, it would have to be close to a million. If you leave Verizon, you've definitely lost Unlimited Data forever, and how long can Sprint stay Unlimited? Two years? If I upgrade now with Verizon, I've got two years of unlimited, too.
I'm not saying don't switch; by all means, vote with your checkbooks...but with over 100 million customers, it's going to take a lot to get VZW's attention--and it's not like they don't anticipate losing customers over this.
