[Updated] Verizon Plans To Eliminate 'Grandfathered' 3G Unlimited Data Plans

I think the outcry in the replies in the topic alone summates my feelings as 10+ year VZW subscriber who's using an unlimited 4G plan.

I might call and see if I can take my current plan and lock it in for 10 years or something. If they ask if I'm sure, I can just tell them "I'm pretty sure y'all will breach the contract before I do." and see what kind of response I get.

You made me think of something.

I'm on a "special" vzw promo plan. The 9.99/month/line unlimited data plan. I wonder if they'd take it away. Since if I'm not mistaken they're still giving it to people.

Now I'm looking into making my Rezound on Sprint! VZW has turned to nothing but greed over the past few years, they like to compare them selves to AT&T but the "grandfathered" data users still get to keep there unlimited plan! Man this really ticks me off!

If Verizon gets rid of my grandfathered unlimited data, I'll leave and never go back.it's not just to prove a point, it's because my bionic would be useless.I always use at least 30 gigs a month and I wouldn't even consider myself a bandwidth hog, but 4g is a hog in its own rite.one Netflix movie alone can take a couple gigs..

You could always use your BIONIC on AT&T :)

"That is beneficial to us." Isn't the number one thing supposed to be the customer? What ever happen to that?
Unfortunately with each passing year it seems to be less about the customer. This can be said with a bunch of other big name companies as well

Well before we all start freaking out about it, let's see what the new family share plans are like.

Hate to say this, but some of the complaining sounds a little like entitlement to me. Verizon didn't have to grandfather us into unlimited data. They didn't have to grandfather unlimited 3g people into unlimited 4g. Heck, I think it was rather nice of them to keep on the unlimited people for as long as they have.

The fact is that the wireless industry is moving away from unlimited data plans en masse. They are a thing of the past. Verizon has to evolve like any other phone company. They are in business to make money.

Sure, switch to sprint if you want. You'll pay less, but you'll get less - slower speeds and poorer coverage. There's a reason why they charge less.

Could not have said it better!

This is wrong in my case. I have been paying for the unlimited, even though it's not needed really, because THEY told me I would be safe from losing it in the future, when I will need it. I assumed my kids would increase their data usage as they get older and use their devices more. I figured pay now and have no worries down the road. They suckered me in. That's a ****ty way to do business.

I'll take the small drop in service. VZW's 4g stinks anyway. Yeah, sure it's fast, but it goes in and out constantly. I couldn't count how many times I've lost signal in the middle of a 4g area while doing something important.

You know this isn't Verizon's fault. This is either the Rep selling you something they could not promise or you being ignorant enough to believe that they were going to let you keep unlimited forever. Quit whining.

For myself, it just means when my contracts are up I will actually do a little more shopping.

A contract is a contract & if it locks us into Verizon for 2 years @ said price for a specific service (unlimited data) than they are locked into giving you unlimited data until the contract is up.
The only way they can get you off the contract is if you agree or when it expires.
So you are good until your contract is up but after that they will be coming for you & that would be the time to use your negotiating skills & loyalty to see if you can keep unlimited data.

Never hurts to ask !!!!

Well I do believe there is something in the tos that says Verizon reserves the right to cancel/void the contact at any time, so maybe they will force people to switch by voiding their contracts

But a voided contract means neither of you are under contract any more which means they can no longer impose an early termination fee. I would happily accept a voided contract and go to a month-by-month on my G-Nex until I switched to another carrier for the Galaxy SIII or the PadFone.... or maybe even for a Note.

Let's keep this discussion about VZW and the news story and not about our opinions of each other.

Exactly, all the people with unlimited data are upset about this but let's not turn it on each other, let's turn it on the real bad guys here- VERIZON...

I don't see how VZW is going to avoid heavy backlash on this one, just the fees they proposed before were enough to make some news stations, so what will this do?

Yeah man, you're right! I'm whining! The VZW rep has nothing to do with this or VZW the company! How dare I take someones word! The $800.00 sale he got had nothing to do with it I guess. The 3 new data lines at 30.00 a month were no incentive to lie to me. It's all my fault. Or maybe I am ignorant? How dare I try to protect myself from outrageous overages in the future! Why couldn't I keep unlimited forever? I'm the guy they want to have unlimited. I don't use over 7gbs a month.

Tools will be tools.

No personal attacks please...
I do agree it is Versions fault though, I heard from multiple local and tech support people that anyone on an unlimited 3g plan will be grandfathered in when they upgrade, and that was just a few months ago so Verizon was obviously telling them that they would get grandfathered in whenever they upgraded within the next 2 years at least
