[Updated] Verizon Plans To Eliminate 'Grandfathered' 3G Unlimited Data Plans

I don't don't know how other people do it, but for me I just don't see how it is possible to use 4g and use less that 20 gigs a month.. 10 if I used my phone like 3 days a month. 4g sucks down data like it sucks down battery. I don't know how anyone could stay under 10 gigs let alone 4 or 5

I'd like to welcome you to the 20th century. Here, we have this thing-a-ma-whatsit called a Wi-Fi Hotspot. The way it works is when you need data but don't want to burn your plan, you connect to it and like magic, you can do whatever you want.

Back on a serious track...I don't play with my phone constantly. I'm at work, focused on my job, for basically 12 hours a day, 5 days a week and some weekends. My phone is used to occasionally check email, and as I drive home, listen to music or get directions to some store or something. That's it. On the weekends if I am at home (which I usually am), I'm on my home wireless which is 50Mbps/5Mbps, so it blows past 4G anyway. For any serious searching or streaming, I'm using a computer for the larger screen that it offers.

People who burn more than 5GB a month ON THEIR PHONE are doing something wrong. I'm sorry.

That said...I do not support this change by Verizon simply because the CFO himself basically admitted they're doing it for greed and profit, not because of any bandwidth limitation or anything like that, but just because they want more money out of people. My question is why they don't charge for other services and get smarter about how they charge?

Stop charging for Visual Voicemail, offer it free when you take advantage of a higher rate plan than the base $39.99 plan.

Give people the choice of a metered plan that has a fixed minimum and maximum allowance per month. So you charge $5/GB, minimum 2GB charged per month, for a 10GB plan. $3/GB, minimum 5GB charged per month, for a 20GB plan. $2/GB, minimum 20GB charged, for a 50GB plan. You pay for what you use, but you cannot go over whatever your selected maximum is. Then the hogs can't go over 50GB (which I SERIOUSLY cannot fathom from a phone) and the grandmas of the world have a neat and tidy $10/month bill for data.

I can't believe people complained about users usages :icon_eek:. They promised Unlimited data plan that they paid fully and never late! It is in their discretion to use as what it is said "UNLIMITED" They don't steal nor hogs as that is the term from Verizon or the carriers. They Paid for such service, we all just blind during the early 3G data plan about how much we can use and the fear of Verizon to cut our service off. This time tho Verizon made it clear about how much data you can use and that is that. Take it or Leave it. Arguing what others can use or should use is stupid! Not all areas capable of getting super high speed... few are using dial up while many are using DSL plan that maxxed at 6Mbps barred U-Verse. This is why ATT are also Capping their home internet for upto 150GB and 250GB for Uverse.

As for the saying that these Hoggers slows your internet down... There will always be a peak time where your internet stutter. It just now depends on which users used up their 2/4gb data plan first within the month for you to enjoy full speed!

The sad things is modders and smart people that chose to use Android OS and able to maximize of what they can use with their bought phone were nice enough to lend their knowledge that many begged for these developers to share for free! Are now scrutinized for popularizing and helping these carriers making money from new subscribers that enticed by the capability. Where is Blackberry? They now begging for developers to pimp their OS up. Bit to late? We paid monthly and I've been with Verizon for years. If they don't have bad managements and greed to make themselves rich... Our money (90 Millions subscribers or so) are plenty m8!

Just because you use your device a certain way doesnt mean everyone is or should be like you! Im still on 3g and use spotify, web surfing and some youtube and still go over 8 gigs a month! Its not like i download large files or anything. I dont feel im doing anything wrong with my phone at all. Why have a smartphone at all if you dont use all of its features.

The fact is that mobile computing is taking over, we use less and less of our desktops and laptops as these devices get more powerful. Verizon is clearly taking advantage of this and know how addicted we are to our phones so they will raise prices, and the majority of people will let it happen. The only way to get the carriers to notice is not to use a smartphone in the first place! Sadly to say im hooked on my phone, but if the price gets equivilent to a car payment i can certainly live without it. Library cards are free and magazine subscriptions are fairly cheap!

Revelated, they're doing something wrong if they use more data than you?u just said u barely use Ur phone- and there isn't wifi everywhere.specifically, not all people have wifi at home which is where Netflix and lots of days gets used. Don't talk to me like i'm stupid. Have you ever used Netflix? Obviously not if u can stay under 5 gigs. N sayin that those who arent like u r wrong is ignorant.

I f@#$%&* hate that Verizon is getting rid of the unlimited plan.

That being said, a phone is not where one should primarily be streaming Netflix. An occasional TV show maybe, but if you're using your phone as your primary method for streaming any video then you have to realize that ditching the smartphone and getting a $30 per month internet service is a better investment.

More info: Oh Snap: Verizon Will End Unlimited Data Grandfathering If You Buy A 4G Phone From This Summer Onward

All people signing new contracts will have to take this. All people with current 4G on an unlimited plan will be able to keep it for the duration of the contract, though it seems VZ will move you to a tiered plan automagically if you sign a new contract as with all other users. It will be interesting to see what they say to 4G users at the end of their two years. Wondering if they will really tell subscribers that they can take the tiered plan or opt out of their service. Of course, that far out Nexus phones will have come into full force so perhaps "the user wins."

Why? Says who? Why should my primary netflix source be something other than my unlimited phone?

Whelp -- if this comes out to be true -- I guess it's time to see if I can find a modem for my Razr and GTab that will work on Sprint.

Is sprint really the answer though? I'd rather pay at&t for the better handsets. GSM means I have more options and or true nexus.

I deal with AT&T and TMobile on a regular basis for work. AT&T's customer support sucks, TMobile's network is worse. In any case, AT&T, TMobile, Sprint, I think we're gonna get shafted cause VZW has contracts with all the major manufacturers of quality cell phones.

And to whomever was @*#)#ing about 10 gigs being too much data usage? I deal with hundreds of computers throughout the country via RDP, VNC, and VPN. I use 80% of my data for work, not 'play'. So... bite me :)

This to me sounds like Major Carriers shows grievance of what they thought a limit to such a small device without knowing nerds that work at Apple, Samsung, and Motorola able to produce nanotech that can compete with PC at home (a revelation from ATT CEO) dancedroid. I don't think we are that daft of moving to different carriers without thinking that the focus of such topic is just that "Smartphone users". For me an example, 2 smartphones with 3 normal phones. My only solution in this case is their lost in 2 $30s required data plan, no more Visual Messaging, no more money coming from Online Videos to Verizon, texting, and 2x $299 from 2 years upgrade. My only missing point is perhaps GPS. The thing is tho they were fine and existed without smarthphones before :p. In the end tho they will lose billions! This to me saying we needed your money to upgrade towers etc and once we are done upgrading, we decide to screw those that helped instead of thanking costumers like they used to back in the day. Unless banks are still willing to lend Big Money loans for future developments, They are now stuck! But again... We are moving way too fast with technology.

The phone LTE is way faster than my home internet and I still believe what I have now at home is fast enough! Instead of making excuses like this then why don't they focus on this one technology? Instead of maintaining cables underground to houses (fi-os), they can set up more towers. That's what I call win win for both sides! They can also make more money from people buying phones as they burnt their phone faster than intended as they tethered and overheated the phone :icon_ lala:

The title says nothing about 4G grand fathered in peeps being pushed to tiered. Just a ploy to get 3g users to be pushed into 4g plans. If they tried tiering the 4g users who bought charges and bolts they would easily suffer through class-action lawsuits like att did when they throttled users on unlimited 3g to get them to switch. If you want to jump ship to any other carrier that is your choice but you have to respect Verizon for expanding their 4g markets so fast while maintaining nice data speeds and keeping unlimited as long as they have.

Also for those on unlimited 4g whose unlimited will run out when their contracts do its not hard math. Buy retail priced phones from websites or from eBay to avoid upgrading your handset through verizon and you will save more money in the long run and will not be technically upgrading your contract with vzw therefore you keep unlimited 4g.

To be honest the main thing that will determine if i stay with verizon is how google works out their nexus line of phones in the future. Will Verizon recieve the next nexus? If not eh oh well, it was fun while it lasted and i'll just be over on the dark side (At&t lol)

At first, just like all of the angered users on this forum i was in "ZOMG WTF VZW mode" but now im whatever about it, anyways since upgrading my home internet i dont even go past 1gb anymore so if i'm stuck in a tierd data so be it.

Look we all need to just relax a bit, its not like this is the end of android. The smartphone have been evolving at a crazy rate, it was only a matter of time that this was going to happen.

*What im about to say is not intended to offend anyone*
Maybe if you cant deal with the additional cost that this might bring you then maybe you should switch to a cheaper alternative. Who here want's to buy a Ferrari? Ok, now who has $300,000 for one............ Not everyone. Look its verizon we all know its going to be a bit more expensive than some of the others.
