[Updated] Verizon Plans To Eliminate 'Grandfathered' 3G Unlimited Data Plans

Yes, as you go through the upgrade cycle you will be forced into a shared plan.

So if i was to walk in to verizon today and upgrade to a 4g device i would be switched to a shared plan? I thought we had until "mid summer"!

If this is so its time to try out Sprint. They are offering $100 to port your number and sign a new contract.

I don't don't know how other people do it, but for me I just don't see how it is possible to use 4g and use less that 20 gigs a month.. 10 if I used my phone like 3 days a month. 4g sucks down data like it sucks down battery. I don't know how anyone could stay under 10 gigs let alone 4 or 5

Bye Bye Verizon,

When they do away with unlimited they lose the only reason to stay with them. Other providers offer just as good service, the only reason I have not switched is my "grandfathered" unlimited. Combine this with Nexus being carrier free and we are set. Sprint has to be doing a jig over this announcement!!

I wonder what happens to the unlimited Hotspot I have. Will that come out of the same pool of data as my phone or will there be 2 seperate pools? I'm not paying 2 times for using out of 1 pool of data that's for sure.

Good point. That it what I have for school use. Allows me to get my work done at home on my laptop and watch the videos and such. I'm at an actually university but EVERYTHING is online now and done outside of the classroom. It seems like we are losing unlimited data PERIOD...

The real question is, is this for 3G to 4g only, or forcing current unlimited 4g people to a severely limited data cap. They can easily make do with unlimited or say, 25gb cap, on 4g bc only few need that coverage. 4g is fast, made for entertainment and use of our smartphone. If you cap 4g at what they are doing, what is the point of even implementing fast data when you cant use it at your leisure???

I recently signed a new contract for a 4G device. That said, I'll be moving into a Sprint coverage area soon, so I'm not too worried about it.

Time to start contacting your government reps and make it known that this is a problem. Shammo actually said implementing the $30 fee was THE RIGHT THING TO DO. Seriously?!?! Ripping off people scraping by and have no Internet access available and charging MORE for less?? I know the government is just as crooked by they just might get enough letters too do something or slow down the jacking of fees and jacking the customer like they are a monopoly. When one does something the others follow just bc they know they can. This is truly going to become sickening when a single line with minimum everything will cost us $150 plus. Heading there way too fast.

For the people who keep saying use Wifi and to get with the times...ummm I live where broadband doesn't exist and won't, as many others do. Realize the bigger picture...rich getting richer...has got to stop at this record pace.

People scraping by?? If that's the case then you need to re-evaluate your situation and your conditions. If paycheck to paycheck is the case and all you care about it your unlimited data going away, there are bigger issues. Plus, no internet access?? when did VZW say, "please use our phones to replace your home internet, we want you to" when?? where?? again, if that's what you are doing then your financial situation isn't that great. time to prioritize things.

sorry but again, this was coming, everyone knew it. It's not like they suddenly magically did this. There have been rumors for a long time now.

Best coverage, yes, best service, not quite, technically att is better. They do have the largest "4g" network aka hspa+ which blows Verizon 3g away (hspa+ is usually 3-10 mbps, 3g is 2.5 mbps at very best) plus att is also working on 4g LTE which is just as fast as Verizons not to mention better choice of high quality Android phones (galaxy s2, s2 skyrocket, galaxy note, HTC one x, etc) if I'm going to have to pay for tiered data then I want to at least be fast all around not some blazing fast and some painfully slow

you're right in the HSPA+ vs 3G for top end speed on the "fallback network" , and they may have a larger footprint.
but so far every AT&T customer I know hates them for their horrific quality on phone calls.
data is one thing, voice is another. if I need to call someone I need that call to be stable.

This company is a big bag o' douche.... I have a number of comlaints about them and they just keep adding to the list.
1 - Killed my new every 2 discount
2 - Jacked up the price of phones to 300 for anything worth having.
3 - 30 to upgrade now... I've been sitting on an upgrade since July last year waiting for something worth... and now they tell me I have to pay even though I was eligible before the fee was instated.
4 - Stealing away my unlimited data plan.
5 - the BS they pull with corporate discounts Discount the primary price of the plan and 1 data plan. no discount of the 2nd line at all.... horse ****!!

I'll be looking around to see where I can save the most money now....

That is the question of the day...we won't know until Verizon clarifies and they better do it fast.

I think it is pretty much narrowed down to four possibilities:

  • It will only apply to those on a 3G device upgrading after the Family Share Plans go into effect and those currently on 4G stay unaffected.
  • It will apply to anyone still on an unlimited data plan (3G or 4G) but only when they upgrade after the Family Share Plans go into effect.
  • It will apply to anyone still on an unlimited data plan (3G or 4G) but only when their current contract expires regardless if they "upgrade" with Verizon or buy full price/third party after the Family Share Plans go into effect.
  • It will apply to 3G upgrading 4G customers at the time of upgrade after the Family Share Plans go into effect AND at that point will apply immediately to 4G Unlimited customers with an option to switch to the new plans or have their contract bought out (meaning they can leave with no ETF).

Yeah, its bull**** for those of us that have been with Verizon for years. But as one guy on here said thanks to all those douche bags who bragged about using in excess of 100 GB a month on their plan through apps like Fox Fi. I myself use Fox Fi, but omfg, the last thing I'm going to do is brag about my usage. Ya know, this reminds me of the Army...its called 'mass punishment'...the majority pays for the stupidity of a few.
