Verizon beings unlimited data throttle - Your response?

You must of just read the title of this thread. If you read the article, it states that Verizon WILL begin data throttling....or in Verizon's words "NETWORK OPTIMIZING their 3g service"

Actually, the article clearly says they will not be throttling. There is a big difference between throttling and optimizing. What verizon plans to do is very understandable and not a big deal.

If they throttled high users, your speeds would be reduced for the rest of your current cycle. Other carriers are throttling after a certain amount of data used. With verizon, the high users will only see reduced speeds if they are in a congested area.

Think driving down a highway she's you are used to going 75 mph but when it is congested, you end up driving 55 until three congestion clears and then you are back to 75.

Yea I know how it works. That's why I added NETWORK OPTIMIZING in there lol

Sorry but I just couldnt stay away.

"Optimizing" is just a marketing buzz word for throttling. Read between the lines: if youre breaking the 2gb barrier then you run the risk of being throttled even if youre not on a congested tower. With this, Verizon has ground to stand on and throttle anybody who is a >2gb user regardless of how congested the tower is. They can call a line working at 25% "congested" and throttle whoever. This way they can keep over selling their services, keep old equipment, and charge the same price.

Think of buying a new car every year and everytime you buy a new car it is faster and has more features than the old one. The catch is that everytime you buy a new car you are limited by the manufacturer to driving it less than the previous car. Eventually you have a badass car but you can only drive it 5 miles a day.

Due to duopolies this is allowed in the telco business. Its a shame it got this far. They even charge for text messaging when its virtually free for them(the bytes ride along on the tower ping that happens regardless).

Tether to your hearts content. Them charging for tethering is absurd and an insult to the consumers. They literally charge you extra for nothing(you still have a cap when tethering btw).

The other thing is: A person is paying for unlimited data and goes over the 2GB trigger for Verizon..... Verizon begins to Throttle the speed of this person's internet. I kind of have an issue with this because it's just a "counter measure" tactic by Verizon. I'm guessing here but, they know the back lash would be pretty high is they were to outwardly nab people for "illegal" tethering so; they pull this instead. Sure; they don't know if this person they are throttling went over the 2GB on the phone or via a tether but, if the person did NOT tether; they certainly have a right to be pissed off. Listen, the bottom line here is; Verizon or any other carrier FTM is going to play lots of games and see just how far they can shove it to the consumer. The whole give em an inch thing is in full effect. So for those of you who say: "i'm OK with this".... think long and hard about the long term ramifications and what you may NOT be OK down the road. It's only going to get worse from here. First 300.00 phones with a NE2 then more expensive data, then throttling..... see a trend here!?

Doesn't bother me...used 5gb at the most when first rooted my phone and downloaded loads of roms and stuff lol

I actually had no difference in my speed test results until I got to around 12gb. Before that, my speeds were normal (1.2-1.4 mbs) my cycle begins tomorrow so I'm looking forward to see if the throttling continues....

This. Other countries are passing us by while riding the progression wave and were stuck with a dancing game. For the people saying "it doesnt bother me" - itll be bothering you soon enough since data usage naturally goes up but their caps will stay the same. Wait until they pull this with 4g phones when everybody moves to them. "Oh, heres a huge sized straw but your cup is still the same size."

This is a never ending debate, really. For the people who think this is a travesty, you simply have to stand up and say something to Verizon, not to the forum here. Otherwise it's just baseless arguing and borderline whining. If you really feel that you are being taken advantage of then do something about it. Complain, get your friends to complain and see if you can forge some change. Or you can continue to just keep paying them and letting them take advantage of you.

This only allegedly affects 5% of VZW's customers, so contrary to what some may believe, this is not a travesty to most. In fact, most probably have no idea it's happening and simply won't care. That's not to say it's fair to those you legitimately use that much data, but again, complaining about it where no one is going to hear you doesn't solve anything.

I just don't understand the mentality of the people who keep saying what a horrible company Verizon and the other telcos are, but yet continue to pay them every month. I understand just dropping your cellphone plan is not a feasible option, but if you truly believe you are being ripped off why are the only complaints directed to forums like these? I can't imagine myself knowingly getting ripped off and just sitting there and taking it. People accuse those who are not even affected by it of being taken advantage of and just "bending over", but the truth is the people who are complaining and not even attempting to do anything about it are the ones who look like they're being taken advantage of. Because it is affecting you, and you do feel its unfair, and you're still not doing anything, not even complaining even if it gets you nowhere.

I'm so sorry you have to pay half of full price for a recently launched computer. I didn't know they started charging more for new products now. Let me go complain some more about the price of nonessential goods when there's something that does the same thing for about 100.

Tl;dr: waaaah

If they start throttling me for going over 2GB (I typically do about 2 - 3 GB per billing cycle), then I'll definitely be going to Sprint when my contract is up. Sprint coverage happens to be decent in my area and 3G on Verizon is plenty fast for me so 4G on Sprint should suffice.

And I refuse to believe that 2GB represents what the "top 5%" uses. I'm willing to bet that far more than 5% of Verizon users hit 2GB or more.

I'm sure they can prove it...haha...it's not like they can lie about whats going on on their network without being checked on that...

Know how the majority of use their phones (texting/angry birds), I could see 5% being pretty accurate. The issue is our frame of reference. 5% of the general population on VZW goes over the 2gb threshold, but I would guess that if you narrow your sample to the people who spend any amount of time on these forums, it would be closer to 50% of users.
