Verizon beings unlimited data throttle - Your response?

I will say this 2gb is not anywhere near the top 5%. Think of all the responses in here so far, yes we are a very small forum but you can get atleast a little sample size. Also think about all the teenagers who I know don't stay under 2gb's. I am willing to bet the top 5% start at much higher than their supposed 2gb starting point.

I believe the 2GB is accurate. My wife and my teenage daughter both have Droids but they don't even break 1gb. Then consider all the "premium" phones our there like the Samsung intensity and LG EnV that are 3g phones. They still count towards the total data users so I am sure 95% of users don't exceed 2gb.

^Forgot all about the non smart phones...lol Well....this might suck...lol. They need separate policies for smartphone users. Can you even use Netflix on a non smartphone?

Yes but there is only one movie you can watch, it's called "your device cannot support this content. If you continue to try and view this website, your phone will explode"

And what about all the Iphone4s and 3GS's out there on VZW 3G.... the thought of consuming over 2gb of data on an iphone is painful to even think about

I just don't understand the mentality of the people who keep saying what a horrible company Verizon and the other telcos are, but yet continue to pay them every month. I understand just dropping your cellphone plan is not a feasible option, but if you truly believe you are being ripped off why are the only complaints directed to forums like these? I can't imagine myself knowingly getting ripped off and just sitting there and taking it. People accuse those who are not even affected by it of being taken advantage of and just "bending over", but the truth is the people who are complaining and not even attempting to do anything about it are the ones who look like they're being taken advantage of. Because it is affecting you, and you do feel its unfair, and you're still not doing anything, not even complaining even if it gets you nowhere.

Oh, I let the companies know what I think. I have even filed complaints with the FCC(worthless). I was thinking about getting rid of my texting plan and using one of those data based programs on the market so I dont have to be overcharged by 500%(literally).

Or, perhaps they are actually going to do what they say and there is no need for paranoid customers to "read between the lines".

I easily go over 5 GB every month and I never tether. It is all legit use. But I have no issues with them optimizing. Before anyone gets angry and accuses them of shady practice, why not wait and see how your speeds are as you go up in data?

There is no need to wait. They already cap "heavy" users. Youre probably being throttled already since their current softcap is 5GB.

This quote is a little misguided. Perhaps a better analogy is the fact that Ferrari makes a car that is capable of going 200mph, but you will never get to see that because sperd limits range from 55 to 75 mph on highways. You don't go out and buy a car and then complain when you can't use it to its fullest capabilities.

No, my analogy was right. Yours is off because they DO make the speed limits 200 mph(faster back haul equipment) but then tell you you can only drive at that speed for 5 miles(even after saying you can drive forever). Higher bandwidth = less time spent saturated.

But I like my "bigger straw and same sized cup" analogy the best. That describes everything perfectly. Wont be long until every video on youtube is 1080 while everybody is on 4g and then that drink will be an appetizer. After that youll be paying big time to drink.

I think the 2GB number comes from what Verizon would consider ideal maximum use per user per month. So they put that out there as the 'overage' number so people get it in their heads that they shouldn't be using more than 2GB per month. As everyone else said, I would bet the top 5% use over 5GB easily, possibly 10.

Isn't the paying through the nose transition already started happening with the introduction of tiered data plans?

Really, what is Verizon going to do? Continue investing money and resources in 3G and cut into their profits to accommodate the small percentage of high data usage customers that is affecting network speed for the rest of their userbase when the future is clearly 4G? I would love to see someone pitch that idea to upper management and put that on Youtube at 1080. I would let myself go into the top 5% and get bandwidth throttled to watch that. :D

You are confusing two different companies. Your analogy is off. You say it is not right that verizon makes these great phones and then limits what we do. Verizon does not make any phone. Motorola, LG, Samsung, are making high powered phones and verizon controls the network every ate used on. So, back to my example, Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc. make high performing cars but the buyer can't use them to their fullest because someone else (government) controls the Roads and speed limits.

all these analogies are off. It is what it is, no need to write out analogies. It's pretty black and white, it's spelled out perfectly, the i's are dotted and the t's are all crossed, no stone was left unturned......sorry got carried away there!

I didn't read all of the post in here but I do want to say what I think. This is my first 3g phone with someone like that. I pay almost 100 per month which is including the unlimited net. I work on pcs to make extra money and I fix my own cars and help my parents with stuff plus I let the kids view videos on it. I don't think I use 2gig yet but If I'm paying for unlimited use I expect to get what I paid for. That would be like paying for a the biggest cable plan and then the company you got it with gives you half the channels and half the time it doesn't work. Which I have gone thru before. I didn't keep paying for something I wasn't getting and I won't do it now. I don't do torrents, or netflix but I have thought about it. I don't tether my laptop due to me being at home alot and I don't use my laptop as much to need that. But that's how I feel sinceI have to pay a high bill just to have a cell that works at my home when my magic jack isn't working.

You cant seperate the manufacturers and the big telcos. They work to close with each other and one cant exist without the other. Thats why they even subsidize phones and sign exclusive contracts. Having a progressive network is exactly why we have smart phones. Without a network they would be worthless. Both network technology and phone technology builds on each other. The problem is the telcos are pushing these smart phones and not backing them up with their networks but instead going for the money grab. How are data packages getting more expensive when the back end technology is getting cheaper? Its insane. 4g is actually cheaper to implement but yet they have a soft cap of 5gb. Text messages have a max size of 140 bytes and ride in on the tower ping that happens no matter what but yet they charge you out the ass for them? Im going to get off the soap box now lol. Heres a good read:
