Verizon is Raising Prices on Grandfathered Unlimited Plans by $20

My bill will go up from $216 a month with 1400 Minutes (never see more than 700) unlimited text and data on four lines to $292. While I am pissed because worldwide the trend is in the other direction. I'm going to keep playing unless they also get rid of my $20 credit per line. Funny how the uptick matches the promotional discount they gave many of us years ago. They do not have a method to scrub the promotions unless you change your plan.

I looked at T-Mobile and I can switch over to them but I will need to buy phones.
So it would cost me $190/month for three lines of unlimited +1 line of limited data. Add to that the cost of $40 of insurance plus taxes and I'll be close to $250 for the plan. This does not include the cost of new phones.

Sprint was better but not by a whole lot.

They offer to pay ETF and pay off phones, but nothing if you own your devices and have no contract.
You would think they they would offer a real $250/line credit if you come to them with no device payoff or ETF? No such luck. So for people like me that would be one of the best customers to get, they offer no enticements to get me to move.

So with the prospect of buying new phones and saving $40. I think I'll stay. If Verizon finds a way to scrub my line for the promotion, then my bill is ~$370/month and I'm moving.

I've been with Verizon for 17+ years and I cut the cord with my cable company a couple years ago. I typically use 10-15GB a month, but when football season starts it goes up considerably. I'm at 57GB for September and I didn't watch football last weekend. My unlimited data/text 450 minutes single line cost me less than $80 a month with my employer discount. It will increase $16.40 for me with the discount. No big deal.View attachment 75601

Let's not accuse anyone of how, why or what they use their data on. Honestly, It's there prerogative. If you look at his screen shot, the majority of usage is from the Verizon NFL Mobil app. He pays a monthly fee for that and it's only available via mobile usage.

I was fighting everything with in me this morning to not go find a computer and make a full out rant post. Finishing out the work day and having some time to do a bit of research has really changed my perspective on this whole situation.

My first thought when the news hit was this, "I guess I will just cancel my ATT home internet and tether instead." This was a legitimate thought. $40 a month is about what I pay for home internet, and to be quite honest Verizon 4G is often faster than my home internet anyhow. I know that unlimited data plans don't include tethering, but it cost about $30 to add it and I can do it for free with apps like FoxFi without rooting my device or circumventing their protections.

My next thought was this, "Heck I work for ATT and can get a 50% off discount!". Then I got to looking at ATT prices. They are stupid if they think I would ever pay $375 for 50GB of shared data plus a $40 per line access fee. Even if I was going to receive 50% off! They have plans with 15GB of shared data that I could pay about $175 after my employee discount. This puts me $5 cheaper than what I would pay if Verizon added $40 to my bill and I'd get to keep unlimited.

So I talked myself into just paying the stupid extra $40 and not doing anything drastic like using my cell phone as a hotspot for home internet. I then saw where smalltowngirl had posted that Legacy plans like the Alltel Smarchoice won't be affected since we are already paying the $40 per line data fee which is built into our plan pricing.

When I looked at my plan closer I can see that yes I am already paying $40 so what is Verizon going to do raise me to $60 per line? That would just be plumb stupid. If they announce that they will be doing this then yes I will find some other way.

A bunch of people that are on old plans that were gotten rid of years ago, are whining because they want to keep paying 2008 prices in 2015 for a plan that is no longer offered?

If I were you, I would consider myself lucky to have gotten that plan as long as you did.

And 90% of you that claim you are leaving... please... You aren't going anywhere.

If your only reason for staying was Unlimited data that you could tether and abuse... you aren't going to get that anywhere else... so leaving will accomplish nothing more than downgrading to another network...

Just get on tiered programs and stop using your phone as a home ISP hotspot.... You got away with it for years, and now it ends.

why is it every single time there's a post regarding vzw's UDP you come in telling people how lucky they are and that they're just upset because they tether and abuse the network and blah blah blah... it's the same story every single time with you.

I'm not paying 2008 prices bro, I'm paying 2012 prices from the LAST TIME I upgraded my phone so stop telling me I'm lucky to still be paying prices for 3 years...

honestly it sounds to me like you're just upset because you got rid of unlimited data and misery loves company.

oh and FYI I tethered last month when I was moving because I didn't have internet for a few weeks and guess what, between netflix youtube and SWTOR I used a grand total of 23 whole gigs... and that's watching netflix almost every night. that's the first time I've tethered since 2013 aside from just testing it out if it was working or an internet outage while I'm in the middle of a raid.

To me ...if anything, this says unlimited will be around for a while longer..not to say that they won't milk us for even more money..and that's probably their plan..the 1%of unlimited users probably are large data users. So their intent is to probably boost the cost until its no longer a better deal for you to pay for unlimited, in hopes they can then offer you a tiered plan with perhaps a double data promo for a year, to get you off of unlimited..

I do know that I will now insist that they include at least a year of WiFi hot spot on each unlimited line I have..and boost my talk minutes. No guarantee I get either. But I can certainly try .

Now we can subsidize phones too?? No..what other extra charges would they throw in?? I think I'll buy outright.

$20 ($240 a year) I'm divided. On one hand if I had unlimited data I would pay the extra $20 as that is still cheaper than their other plans and you can upgrade without the fear of them trying some slick stuff to get you off unlimited.

On the other hand I understand being tired of the nickel and dime. Those looking to switch better make sure the grass is actually greener. And this is coming from some one who switched 3 years ago.

They're trying to sell the fact that you can NOW subsidize their phones on the new increased cost UD plans. BUT, ...when i visited a verizon store for a defective SIM card not too long ago, but clearly before this news came out, i asked the tech specialist whether big red would start subsidizing phones in the future. He said that they have been for a while, but never advertized it. He even went as far as walk me over to the phones and say; "look, the prices on all these phones are off contract prices. You can make monthly payments on them interest free". I was pretty dumb founded as to why they had not advertized this prior. I even balked about it on FB. Maybe it was a trial for when they we're to advertize it in light of the cost increase for UD. i still call BS on the ordeal.

Reading the 'official' reports on Engadget (now part of VZ under AOL) VZ is saying most people left on UD can save a good amount of money switching to tiered plans. BS i say! I only use 15-20 gbs a month, mostly through their own NFL gameday app streaming games. But in their tiered plans, i would look at an enormous increase. Fooey!

I'll ride this out and see what ACTUALLY happens. With my company discount of 25%(?) i'd look at another $15, but i find the cost of connectivity already to be outrageous as it is.

Google Fi seems fun but 15+ gigs @ $10per still not affordable. Plus cost of minutes/text plus new phone.

Exactly.. And saying...why didn't your rep tell me about this??? All they have to say is....do you make it a habit of signing things you don't read??(we all do, did you read and do you accept the terms and conditions) ...I had it out with my bank about this..title b I think it is..if you make so many transfers out of your savings in a month via phone or app..they charge 15$ each time..I had asked before hand and they said no..I had it on recording ..aonthey ate it..but I learned to ALWAYS READ THE FINE PRINT,TWICE..lol

I'm surprised it took this long honestly. For the longest time. Switching from our UD to a metered plan was always more expensive. Never understood the thinking there from VZW. Why would I dump UD for a metered plan that costs more.
But now its about the same price if we went to 6GB.
Still no reason to switch. But raise it another $20 next year?

Well said Mr PereDroid....in your situation the $20 per line would sting a bit more, as opposed to those of us that use copious amounts of data. I think you're making a wise choice keeping it though. If only because there's no going back once you ditch it.
Bottom line for me is, despite the higher fee, we still have UD. ....well, at least for ONE more year.

I stop using wifi a long time ago(to lazy to switch it on my phone lol). I burn data like there is no tomorrow using apps like Kodi, Mobdro, and Slingbox! Still keeping my UD and I do not care what people say!
