Verizon Tech here - ask away!

Viperboy,

There are so many posts here, thanks again for doing this. I made a post a few days ago, and to my knowledge, it wasn't answered. If you could take a look at this, it would be great.

Viperboy,

I would first of all like to say thank you for what you are doing here, and congrats on the moderator status! I know most, no pretty much all, techs even in-store don't know half of the things that you know.

I am on my second Droid now. The first one had an issue with a headphone jack and the tech replaced it. The second Droid has an "odd" little quirk that I was wondering if it was normal. The power/lock button in the top right is very mushy/soft. It doesn't "click/press" like my old one did. It also wiggles quite a bit. Is this normal? Is this button going to stop working? Are some Droids different than others?

I'm thinking you've seen more of these Droids than you care to remember, so you would probably know.

Thanks again!

Paul

I saw this mentioned earlier in the thread but I can confirm...it seems like Verizon's 3G network is being very picky when it comes to allowing IRC connections. Sometimes it works and a lot of times it does not. I have used various applications to the same degree and same result. It is really all about luck of the draw.

When the phone was originally released and in to late november, it was never a problem.

I have no information for you, unfortunately. When I looked for some info on IRCs in our systems, I came up with nothing. I will see if there is anything more that I can find.

That's excellent, thank you so much! Like you said, it's Verizon's network and they have every right to do what they think is best, and if they want to block a chat protocol that's their decision. I'd just like some transparency, like to know what I am allowed and am not allowed to do. Especially for new customers making the decision to move to Verizon's network or not, they need to know whether things are going to be blocked or not.

In general I'm very happy with Verizon's network, it seems to run Youtube just as fast as my PC and I have 3G coverage EVERYWHERE. I don't even get TV antenna reception where I live, but I get great 3G here ;).

I posted this in the GMAIL thread as well hoping to find a workaround...

... GMAIL truncates messages from long threads and forwards... is there any way around this? My work threads often get 15-20 replies/forwards long and GMAIL constantly truncates them on the droid. This is pretty awful. Is there any email client/workaround? I've seen people say to 'find the original' thread, how is this done? I only find the ONE thread on my droid, and it's truncated, rendering it useless. HELP

oh, and I don't consider 'going to the browser' to pull up the full gmail on the browser a workaround, that's painful... does anyone know of an email app that works without truncation?

I've had my motorola droid for a few days now and it has been randomly turning itself on and off. I have no idea why this is happening but if you have any thoughts please let me know! thanks!

Do you have it plugged into a charger when it does that? If you do, is it a charger that did not come with the phone? This problem is one symptom of using a charger of insufficient capacity.

Or - did you mean that it is rebooting randomly? Others have seen this, some have found apps that caused it while others ended up having their phones replaced under warranty. Depending on how inconvenient this is you may want to do a factory reset. This will clear your data so anything not synced to google should be backed up first. Or you could deinstall all of the apps you have added and see if it stops rebooting.

The charger I have been using is the one that came with the phone. And it has been rebooting randomly. With the charger in at times, and when the charger is not in also. I'm not sure what the problem is. I'm going to uninstall a few recent apps and see if thats the fix.

as per your opinion...
Do this... Home Screen > Menu > Settings > Wireless and Networks > Mobile Networks > Check Data Roaming

This option indicated significant data charges may occur or something to that effect... should i be concern even if i have a unlimited data plan

If you have an unlimited plan, you will be fine. I'm not sure why this pops up. The only thing I could think of is that if you're near the Canada or Mexican border, it might pick up towers there and that would be roaming. With all the current plans, there really isn't roaming anymore.

I need to view my work email on my Droid. It's not a gmail account. I'm sure there must be a way to link them without using a completely different email address?

Does your work email allow access via Webmail? If so you can use the Browser to get there. If they use Exchange, you can change to the $45/month plan to get your corporate email. Another option is an app called TouchDown. Check out that program if you want to sync corporate email also.

You don't need the $45 plan to use exchange, it works with all data plans... this has been covered many times, please don't spread wrong information to members.

I was wondering, the lights on the tool bar and the keyboard, sometimes shut off. Is this a power conserving thing?

Yep, when the room is lit... only when the ambient lighting gets so dark does it turn on.
There is approx a 3 second delay between the action if you were to turn the lights on verses off in the room.

Hi - i've set up my gmail account as my default email on my htc device. It isn't receiveing any emails though. help!

make sure you chose which account to sync.

settings--->accounts and sync---> auto sync checked, and choose your account to sync by making sure it says "sycn is on" underneath it.

You can then go and and pick and chose which parts you want to sync also.. such as contacts, calendar, or Gmail or all.

while your waiting to see what Viper says.. try rebooting and even pulling your battery for the max effect and see if the new settings renegotiate with your server properly when coming up.

These things are basically like network settings, negotiations, etc.......very similar to hooking up to your access point or router.

If that doesn't work and you still want to tinker.. I would delete the account and set it up brand new.

Doesn't seem like anything out of the ordinary. Mine doesn't really click either. As long as it shuts off, I'm ok with that :)

Unfortunately, that was the solution I was going to give. I don't know of another EMail app that would help. I'm sure people on here would be able to give you better advise. A search might help you too.

I guess you don't understand, so I will explain again... I work for Verizon. I reply to people on this forum as I would someone in my store. Just because I know about PDAnet, doesn't mean I can recommend it. I can't even talk about it. I have to tell you that if you want to tether, you need to wait until VZ Access Manager works with the Droid. If Exchange works with the $29 plan, great. But I still have to explain to you that it might not be fully supported as on the $45 plan that was made for corporate email.

Don't accuse me of spreading false information, I am answering you just like any Verizon rep should.

I was wondering, the lights on the tool bar and the keyboard, sometimes shut off. Is this a power conserving thing?

Do you mean it's dark and they won't come on? Or do you mean that it is bright around you and they are not on?

i just installed ivideo and was wondering wat kind of movie files would be compatable that i could drag and drop into ivideo file to be able to watch movies. Or if there was another way or App that i could download to watch movies. thx for your time
