[VIDEO] 10min Root complete Guide

Hmmm are you sure you didn't connect out of order?
I just checked and that file is still missing for me.
Maybe I'll try the whole process again after I restore the file.

At what point do you reconnect to the phone? It seems to restore the file almost immediately upon reconnecting the phone, or if the phone is connected when you delete the file it is immediately restored.

I tried reconnecting to the phone at several different places in the process. I tried leaving it plugged in the whole time, plugging it in before booting into recovery, plugging it in immediately after clicking on recovery, etc. I also tried clicking and unclicking the card in several different points in time. I just couldn't reproduce it.

Here's what I just did to test for the usbstor.sys file.
Turned off my phone.
Powered on into recovery.
Plugged in.
Power button.
Down vol then power button.

I f5ed my system32/drivers folder to see if that file would come back anywhere in the process and it hasn't.
Are you sure you didn't plug your phone in while it was on?

does the android sdk need to be fully installed are there any other things not covered by this video that need to be installed?

This doesn't seem to work for a lot of people including myself. I have tried both ways and have restarted my computer I do not have the android sdk installed as that is not mentioned in the video just the sdk files that where included in the zip.

This doesn't seem to actually be newb capable. I have followed directions. I have tried on Windows XP, Windows 7 64BIT, and even a CLEAN install of Vista Business 64Bit.

Just to give an idea of EXACT steps taken on the Vista computer:
1) Installed Java as it is a required component for the SDK.
2) Installed HTC Sync.
3) Put SDK folder on the C drive and then ran the setup and then exited out of it as soon as it actually loaded then got CMD ready with the prescribed commands.
4) Booted phone as prescribed, connected it followed instructions on video TRIED BOTH ways.

It didn't work no other software is installed AT ALL on that machine other than what comes pre-installed from microsoft. I did not connect the phone prior to the first time in boot mode. I then tried several other troubleshooting methods even wiping my 16gb sd card from the moto droid and formating it at 4096 and then tried the default and even tried a 2gb SD card from another phone.

This is just NOT working for some. I wish I had another phone to verify that it couldn't be the phone but I am fairly sure that isn't going to be the issue. I feel there is something else that people are missing.

Of the people having success did they have the android sdk installed prior to this? I do not have the android SDK installed as it was not directed to be done. On another page someone made mention to a sdk/tools/usb-driver folder that folder DOES NOT exist in the package that was included with this tutorial!

The SDK needs to be installed. Watch the very beginning of the root in 10 minutes video.
What how-to are you using?

The in under 10min video shows him running setup on the sdk which I said I did do then it shows him exiting out of the sdk immediately after. I am not sure if that counts as being installed or not but he doesn't go through any packages that need to be installed or anything like that. I followed the directions thoroughly. After following the directions I also followed a lot of troubleshooting guides and the original directions that his directions where written from which are actually easier to understand and give a 3rd option.

None of these things are working for me on 3 computers and 2 sd cards... 1 card is a 16gb from a moto droid formatted and blank. The other is a 2gb sd card formatted and blank.

Ok this may sound stupid but...

Ok one of the main reasons I rooted my incredible was the ability to do a full backup of it to the sd card. Can someone please show me the way? The only threads I have seen on this are for the droid and do not take me to sprecovery...only recovery so I'm a tad lost!

Thanks in advance.

I don't think this kind of functionality will be available until they are able to install a custom recovery console on the phone, which they can't do yet.

My usbstor.sys file comes back within 5 or 10 seconds of deleting it when clicking F5 to refresh. I have unplugged every USB peripheral from my computer other than my keyboard, but it just comes right back. Maybe it is because my laptop is in a docking station? I can try it off the docking station sometime and see if that works I guess. It worked the first time I tried it though, which sucks.

Well crappola :P Just as well though, getting back into adb shell has been impossible this morning ... Thanks for the heads up ;)

This was my first time doing this and after following the added sd card trick everything worked no problems. Thanks

What about Titanium Backup? Does it work on the Inc.yet? Wouldn't that do what you're looking to do? Or maybe I'm wrong?

Titanium does work, and it will allow you to back up apps and data so you don't have to reinstall them after a data wipe/factory reset, but it doesn't let you make a full blown backup of your whole phone as you could with a custom recovery.

I also should qualify my earlier statement. They do have a custom recovery console that you can run once you get through the root process, but it isn't permanent and you have to redo the entire root process every time you want to use it. If you have a phone where the root process is easy to replicate, that might be an option for you. Check out the XDA forums for more info on that.

Root trouble

I haven't been able to get the root to work. I was wondering if you need restore your phone to factory to make it work? Otherwise I was going to get the 2gig Pny card and try again.
