I have read alot about rooting and tethering in the forums and how some people seem to be freaking out about what some individuals have said. Why would they be freaking out? I don't get it. If you Tether and have unlimited data what is the problem?

You don't have unlimited data for tethering. It's $20 for 2GB.

Actually, there are apps that will let you tether using the data on the phone if you root the phone.

Here is the catch. Verizon implemented a policy that the top 5% of data users will be throttled. So that means that if you are tethering "illegally" then you can potentially be in this top 5% and get throttled. That stands for 3G or 4G.

Actually they don't have to honor their warranty if you purchase the phone somewhere else...you have to go to the store where you purchased the phone...yes I used to work for a verizon call center customer service on the phone.

So much misinformation in this thread...

Verizon honors your warranty, no matter if you buy through amazon, zwireless, Walmart, doesn't matter.

As long as it is an authorized 3rd party agent. This could confuse people who buy their phone on Ebay or from an Amazon Agent. AmazonWireless has valid warranty, but Joe Schmo selling his old droid on Amazon does not. Some Connect/Premium retailer stores sell phones that don't come up with warranty in the system, so sometimes it depends if you are buying a reconditioned phone from them that they bought of some dealer and gave a new ESN to...I mean you just gotta be careful because the truth is sometimes it's not always easy to tell.

If you buy a phone from your friend and activate on your account, the warranty is removed because it is now "Customer provided equipment" (CPE), and Verizon will only honor warranty when proof of purchase is attached to it. This means it was bought on that account via a retailer that is authorized to sell Verizon services.

Lastly, programs like Total Equipment Coverage (TEC, 6.99/month) and Extended Warranty (1.99/month), tend to stay on an account when you throw a CPE on there, thus making the system allow a warranty replacement when you come back 3 months later with a problem. However, some reps who recognize a CPE when they see it, might not process the transaction, because technically CPE equipment can't have these services added to it unless there is a promotion.....

Which reminds me! Right now through mid-May Verizon will add on TEC to any phone you bring in, but they do inspect it first.

Okay, to stop some mis-information here.

1.) If you have TEC before adding CPE (customer provided equipment) it remains on the acct unless you ask it to be removed and remains in effect with the CPE. That is verizon policy. Some care reps will remove it without asking, but if that occurs verizon has a policy that covers that which allows you to get a replacement phone for the same price as the insurance phone and get Insurance or TEC back on the acct.

2.) If TEC is on an acct, it doesn't matter where the equipment came from, it is covered under both an extended warranty and insurance replacement.

3.) If a phone is purchased from an authorized 3rd party verizon will warranty the phone with a certified like new replacement. If it is in the 14 day return policy verizon "WILL NOT" exchange the phone for a new one. In order to do that you must go back to the authorized 3rd party and get them to exchange it.

First one being, I purchased my girlfriend and her sons phone's through Costco. Low and behold, less than a month into it, both her and her sons chargers stopped working. I spoke with Costco, there's nothing they can do. Spoke to an in store Verizon rep, and there's "ABSOLUTELY nothing I can do." was his reply. I thought all parts were covered under a manufacturers warranty? Why must their Customer Service suck so bad. I just want new chargers without having to pay for them. What can I do?

Through Costco, they waived the activation fee's through Verizon, but we paid them through Costco. They said we were supposed to be receiving rebates from Verizon regarding them. No rebates came, went to Costco, "Nothing they can do."

Well, for both of these issues, what can "I" do?

Ignore the store reps. I know there are some on here and the retail reps here may understand things, but in my experience most of them don't know policy, warranty, or anything else.

Call Technical Support (800) 922-0204 Choose Option 3.

Your chargers are part of the warranty through Verizon, just like the phone and battery. What is not covered anymore by Verizon is the SD Cards. They will refer you to Sandisk or the manufacturer of the phone to get it replaced.

Can you purchase the 4g data plan even if you don't have a 4g phone? Or even a smartphone yet?

Simple answer, no. The 4G Data plans can "Only" be added to 4G Devices. If you upgrade from a 3G device to a 4G Device you have to switch to a 4G Data plan, not good for people with the grandfathered 3G unlimited data plans.

Now, as for smartphones at this point Verizon is keeping all people that upgrade from 3G to 4G smartphones get to keep there unlimited data plan. And the current 4G data plan is unlimited. There has been no rumors of this changing in the near future. The only thing undecided at the moment is the mobile hotspot cost for 4G devices.

I work retail at a verizon store. It is my understanding that you could return the phone and your contract will terminate and you go back to how it was before. However, depending on the terms of the store (Every retailer is different) Their policy may be exchange only. Read the fine print on the reciept.

I wouldn't recommend starting up a new contract. Like you mentioned, the price would increase a lot. You COULD add another 9.99 line on the other person's account though and just let the contract expire on the x or give it to another friend to take over payments to the account holder.

Thank you.

I bought the phone online, can I just return it to any store for just the restocking fee (since the first post, my phone dropped and now has some very minor scuffs on two corners - the screen and back are perfect)?

Then could just get in on a deal from Wirefly or Amazon if I saw something there?

Oooo, if it's online I think you have to return it online, but I'm not sure. You may be able to go to a corporate store and they may be able to do the return but online is a little more difficult to deal with. Especially since theere is a scuff on the phone. They have to be able to resell the device after you return it.

As for the deals from wirefly or amazon, you could do that but you need to keep in mind that most deals also require you to sign a new two year contract. In order to upgrade your phone with a reasonable price you need to be able to have an upgrade avaliable (as you know). To stay out of the new contract you will need to purchase a divice outright.

Returns and exchanges, including online purchases were allowed at any VZW owned location as of a few days ago, although I know a lot of retail stores argue that because they don't want to deal with an online return.

She's heading to verizon today to return the phone. They still refuse to acknowledge the problem is widespread .... well its 3 or 4 days now and still no 3G. Initially when I asked I was assuming it wasn't a one day issue.

Question about all the Thunderbolt 3G issues.

My wife got her T-Bolt a couple of days ago and yesterday it stopped picking up any 3G service. She can Wi-Fi fine, but no 3G. We are just on the outskirts of 4G so she can't get that either. I looked all around and this seems to be a widespread problem with the T-Bolt.

We took it in to the Verizon store and when I mentioned this, that online is buzzing about the issue, the rep seemed to get a little annoyed ... "We've only had one come in with this issue" Well 3 or 4 of the reps huddled and they called over a manager. their solution was, "we think we're having network issues and it should be resolved soon."

My concern is, my phone an X, has no problem getting 3G and this T-Bolt issues seems to be happening a lot ...

It Verizon scrambling to identify the issue, do they know the issue, or do they have no clue? Specifically account wise, will they refund a percentage of the data plan for the days she is unable to connect to any data?

Your data plan is, what, 29.99 a month?

If it's worth to you to call and get a $1 credit for the day it was out, by all means do it.

For anyone else experiencing this issue, call technical support. There is a bulletin out over it with a fix on how to correct it. It affected all Thunderbolts activated in a specific week or so of time.

I would be curious how long ago you worked for a VZW cal center and whether it was a Vendor or a Corporate call center.

First, I've been a Verizon customer for 5, almost 6 years. I have purchased my new phones wherever I pleased and have always had them warrantied through Verizon.

I've also worked in a Vendor VZW Tech Support Call Center for 7 Months and that hasn't ever been the policy in that time.

The only policy was for Worry Free Exchanges, or now the exchange/return policy. If not purchased through VZW you had to go back to the place of purchase during the first 30 days, now 14 days.

I'm currently with AT&T and would like to move to Verizon sometime this summer - I'm waiting to see what other phones are likely to be release in the next several months.

Anyway, my wife would also be moving to Verizon with me which brings me to my question - Can I purchase a Blackberry or Droid type phone outright and activate it on the network and avoid the datapack plan fee?

My wife would like a better phone than the typical feature phones that are offered without the datapack, but she doesn't use her phone for much other than texting and calling so I don't want to pay $30/month for a dataplan she doesn't need.

No can do.

He is right, can't do it. But you might be able to get the $9.99 discount for having voice and data.

OK kind of a awkward question but here goes.

I have a phone plan friends an family that I carry my mom dad brother an my dads mother on...so we just found out my grandmother has very little time left. So I was wondering if i can get rid of her line when she does pass on, will I still have to pay the termination fee?

There are options for early termination due to death, but I believe it is only at the account level. So, since the line is your name I believe you will need to complete the contract.

However, you can always change it to a broadband device, etc.. instead of keeping it a phone.
