You don't need to install a ROM. To install a theme you can either flash recovery with ClockworkMod Recovery or SPRecovery or use Metamorph.

With Z4Root, Gmail 2.3.2 crashes when sending emails ... force close every time.

Droid X (2.2) ... haven't tried it on 2.2.1. as I'm unsure Z4Root will root 2.2.1.

Yes, but Metamorph is tricky and can lock your phone up tighter than a bondage fetishist's wrists.

Make sure it is a MM theme too. You can't apply just any theme through MM. It will say [Metamorph] or [MM] in the title most of the time

Also, it will more than likely say that the file isn't written correctly or completed(blah blah blah) when you try to extract it. All you have to do is go back into the app and select pick existing theme instead and it should show an unzipped version of the theme.

Not many. And you'll have an even harder time finding full themes. Metamorph is a somewhat forgotten method. I use it for a battery icon but not many people develop for it these days other than custom pull downs, etc. I haven't seen any MM full themes on the forum. I've looked. What exactly is your reason for using MM to theme rather than flashing a theme?

Oh, okay. Gotcha. I take it you haven't flashed any ROMs yet? But yeah, MM is a good app in my opinion but many people don't do anything for it.

If you're worried about screwing up your phone then read read read up on metamorph. I've seen it lock phones into unrecoverable bootloops because someone did something wrong.

Not likely. You'll be fine. Should be anyway. Do you have a custom recovery on your phone or? I'm not sure what all Z4Root includes
