@JCo352
This is exactly what I was told earlier today in so many words but it was unconfirmed.

“Apparently we will probably be waiting even longer for the 2.1 update for Droid. According to my source, the need to “ramp up” the distribution application and the network infrastructure that hosts it won’t just happen overnight. Bitfone has allegedly just contracted with a third-party solution consultant to assist with the redesign of the infrastructure My contact did mention that they are moving on this as quickly as possible, but the reality is that it going to take some time. Not sure what Motorola is planning on doing on the PR front…

Purely speculating but I do think they pushed it out. They will use this time to test the update and then when the distro is back online they will begin to push it out to more users.

What's so wrong with letting those who know how just download and install it themselves? Why not go ahead and make the update available on the google dev site like they did with 2.0.1 if the update is in fact complete?
How will they know who knows how to download and install the update themselves? : )

That would surely be a disaster.

You're probably saying "How hard can it be to mess up?!!"

Trust me people would mess it up and then they would have a whole other mess on their hands. Better to make people wait with a tried and true method that worked before.

As much as I am saddened that the update has been pushed back, it's still nice to know that my droid is scheduled to get another update within a few months of being released! :)

For those of you who may have just jumped onto the smartphone wagon, let me describe some of my past experiences with other "smartphones" and their updates (or lack thereof).

Somehow I was chosen to be the person in our IT department that handles all of the company cell phones, as well as any executive's personal phone. Throughout the years I have worked with just about every model and brand of smartphone that existed. In those years, I was asked countless times when/if there was an update for (insert model of phone here)? My answer to most of those was: I have read that there is a POSSIBLE update coming... no concrete release date or any information has been set. I will let you know when one is available. Most of those resulted in... "yeah, it doesn't look like that model is getting an update. Instead they are releasing a newer model with the newer software..."

In all of those years, if any model had ONE! update in its life cycle, it was a miracle! Windows Mobile phones were the worst! The only ones you could find somewhat regular updates for were HTC phones, as there were cooked roms for the taking from other models/carriers. However, getting an official update from the carrier almost never happened. Updates were usually only pushed if there was a major flaw or security issue. Blackberries have begun rolling out about 2-3 updates per device over their life time. Some get more, some get less.

For the Droid, we have already had one update and are close to our 2nd update and it's only been a few months since its release. Sure, there are some bugs with 2.01... as there will be with 2.1. Exchange email support is still not as good as it should be, nor is the pop3 and the other non email issues. However there are applications available that fill those voids. Whether you choose to use those, or complain about the lack of functionality by using just the stock applications is up to the end user.

No phone I have ever used required zero tweaking or zero software installations to make it do what I thought it should do out of the box. I have accepted the fact that I will need to tweak it to fit my taste and requirements. So far, it is still the best smartphone I have ever used! So, when the update finally is pushed I will get it. Until then, I am satisfied using my stock 2.01 Droid that WILL be getting a 2.1 update in the near future.

Ok... sorry for the lengthy post... I don't post much, as I tend to be very long winded!

In addition to my previous post...

We should all be thankful that Android has a Market Place! One of the hardest parts of my dealings with smart phones was software! In the windows mobile days of old finding software was not easy. First, it was usually expensive for all it was. 2nd, finding the correct version to match the processor type in your device was always a disaster. 3rd, If you did manage to find the software you had to worry if there was enough room to install it!

IF there were any updates to the software that you managed to install on your winmo phone, YOU had to find out for yourself by visiting the developer site. The Marketplace does all of that for you. If there's a software update for something you've installed, it will notify you within the day!

Did I ever mention how much I love the Android platform??? lol... ok... continue on with the thread.... nothing else to see here folks... move on. :)

Doesn't it seem kind of peculiar that Motorola contracted a company without the infrastructure to actually roll out the update. You would think that Motorola knows how many people the update needs to be rolled out to and would choose to have a company with the capacity to cover all of those users for the update.

If I am understanding this the wrong way, can anyone explain what kind of issues the servers would be facing for this update?

this is insanity......

Definition of insanity.....
Do the same thing over and over and expect the same results...

Sorry.
In A poetic mood.....

Absolutely none of this makes any sense.

Bitfone capacity problems my ass... this forum alone serves over a million requests a day (easily) that are way more complex than a static binary file. Throughput/bandwidth problems? Again, sorry but I don't buy it. Verizon has exclusive rights to the Droid, if Moto could provide a working ROM binary Verizon has the capacity to serve it. Verizon runs FIOS networks for crying out loud... if they have a nationwide CDMA infrastructure they have the endpoints to host a freaking IP-connected binary ROM image. Ultimately Verizon also controls the path to the phone over the network so they're responsible for the final say-so and issuance of the OTA update commanding to the Droids.

If Verizon had the ROM and wanted this sent out today (and the ROM was stable/bug free) it would have happened today. Blaming this on Moto or a MDM like Bitfone really stinks of questionable sources and conspiracy. The update wasn't ready, Verizon didn't deploy, it will come soon enough, get over it. If Bitfone is the problem and the update is ready Verizon won't drag this out much longer waiting for them to deploy.

Something smells fishy here, but more than anything it's questionable sources. The hard and definite truth is Verizon has updated public documentation reflecting a 2.1 update being near. That alone is enough evidence to signal that the 2.1 update is happening very soon.... but that's as far as anyone knows until somebody actually gets the update to their phone OTA.

Here's to hoping someone from Verizon leaks an update.zip workable link of the final OTA update for the rest of us waiting. :pint:

Yeah hopefully if BitFone is the problem they can get if fixed within the next few days. An update on saturday would be nice but doubtful.

I call.

VZ has issues, blaming it on Bitfone?

Hey great, but who chose Bitfone in the first place!

There were well towards 1 million Droids already out there when they pushed out the 2.0.1, was it thru the same vendor?

This is pure Verizon crap at this point.

This is a 14mb file if I remember, and even if not, dam, google earth is available for DL, and it is much larger. The network handles that fine.

Fix the issue and push this thingout, then FIRE Bitfone if they couldn't handle it.

With all the conspiracy theories regarding the release/non release of the 2.1 update, I have but one question to ask;

What does VZW/Moto have to gain by not putting out the OTA update?

With the rise in marketshare of the DROID, and the possibility of overtaking the iPhone and BB, wouldn't it make sense for VZW/Moto to make all their existing customers happier with a new release and continue to get word out through the existing customers about how great the DROID is and continue the rapid growth and popularity of the phone?
