5.8.894 offical update before ICS update

the OP's claims make perfect sense. If you applied 5.5.893, you already have what the OTA is, they are identical. if you applied 5.7.893, then that should be the next update after 5.5.893 so you're already 1 step ahead. When the 894 update comes out (or whatever the one is that is after 5.7.893), you should be able to apply that as the kernel/radio will match in the update_script checks. if you applied the latest leak, then you simply wait for the ICS update. So, it seems that all of the fears about being screwed or SOL by applying any of the leaks are no longer reason to worry, as eventually we'll all be able to get back on the path.

there are not going to be multiple updates. trust me, Moto and VZW have much better things to do than come up with some sort of ladder path for a single device. thats not how it works.

they are hoping with fingers crossed that this OTA will in fact clear up the vast majority of issues users are having so they can go and work on the RAZR update as well as everything else on their plates.

*if* there is an intermediate patch between now and ICS it will be due to a critical issue which must be addressed and was not spotted in testing.

i guess as usual only time will tell. the moto level 2 tech i spoke too said the same thing that the OP said. they split up the updates due to the large size, and would release them one after the next until ICS. at this point, i could care less, i'm just waiting for ICS, none of these updates are important to me.

You are so right. Sometimes a bug fix can create another issue. It's wait and see, with fingers crossed. But I agree that there will be no ladder of updates. OP has been misinformed, I'm afraid. If it happens the way he says, I'll be the first to apologize, but until then, I'm looking forward to this update and then ICS.

Soooo.... I want to clarify, because there are about 1 billion things being said in this post: If one applied the 5.7.893 leak, there is NO REASON & NO WAY POSSIBLE to update to 5.8.894? Is this correct?

there is no way right now. if moto releases incremental updates as OP states, then when 894 is released you can update then. otherwise, sit put and wait it out

So, no one knows why this update takes on some phones and not others? What settings do those of us who haven't been able to install this need to check?

of course we know why some people in the soak test group are not able to update.
they've flashed one of the leaks and their kernel/baseband is now incorrect thus the OTA will not work for them.

I'm not one of those people. I have had my phone only five days. I have the version that is listed on the file out of the box. I got the file. Moved it to the root of my sd card. Checked for an update. Nothing.

I am already on the .894 update. Google droidtheory roms...dhacker also has an alpha ics build that its really close to being ready to go.

I'm actually back on .886 /system with .894 kernel/baseband... had to fxz back, and now can't grab the .894 cheesecake any more!

Roms do not change the kernel or the baseband. You are on a rom that was made using the "system" of the 894 update.

So the ROM's don't change the kernel? I am running 5.7.893 on the stock rom forever rooted....what if I were to flash a rom...would that change my kernel back to stock?
