Suggested workaround for Wifi/Data issue and Keyboard Backlight

I've had that happen to me before. The fix potential fix is to delete the file that stores your wifi passwords and stuff. I'd make a backup before you do anything so in case this doesn't fix it, you won't lose your wifi passwords and whatnot. The file is /data/misc/wifi/ wpa_supplicant.conf

Do you have root explorer?

Hi,

after doing a clean install (wiping system, data, cache, dalvik cache, etc) for the umpteenth time, I'm still experiencing the following problems:

1) Wifi connected: but no browsing unless you manually enter an ip address --> dns issue
2) Data connected: but no browsing unless you manually enter an ip address --> dns issue
3) Settings not saved: permission problem
4) Keyboard Backlight not working

Some extra info : my network mode is GSM/WCDMA as I am living in Belgium.

Workarounds

Wifi/Data Problem:
I've found that if you have the Wifi and/or Data issue, you best install SetDNS via Android Market (this enables you to use Google DNS or Open DNS) after the install you need to do the following:
1. turn of WIFI;
2. perform a Fix Permissions;
3. Reboot;
4. Enable data for a minute or two (SetDNS will come asking for SuperUser permissions);

Enabling Data for some time after each boot will make your Wifi work flawlessly! I have made a Tasker profile for this.

Extra observation: if I forget to enable Data and I enable Wifi, SetDNS keeps popping up, so I guess enabling Data makes some files/folders writeable whereas Wifi seems to turn it off. If you forgot to enable Data on boot and did enable Wifi, you need to perform steps 1 to 4 all over again.

Persisting Settings Problem:
Once I've enabled Wifi I don't seem to be able to save my settings, not even when my Wifi is working.
1. Turn off Wifi
2. Perform a Fix Permissions
3. Reboot

Keyboard Backlight Problem:

1. I've disabled Automatic Backlight in Display Settings of Cyanogenmod Settings (not sure if this is necessary).
2. Turn On Automatic Brightness in Settings --> Display --> Brightness
3. Turn Off Automatic Brightness in Settings --> Display --> Brightness

Manually toggling between the On-Off state seems to make the keyboard backlight working. Although I've made a Tasker Profile for this, that doesn't work, you have to do this manually.

I hope some of you guys find this helpfull.

No, I haven't installed that. I think it has File Manager on it, though. I'm CDMA (Verizon in US), too, not GSM. What's the brief step-by-step of deleting that file? And is Titanium Backup the best backup tool to use, or were you talking Nandroid?

Thanks, Jackpot, and again, this is a beautiful build outside of these small bugs.

Try this:

Open the terminal emulator app

Type su (might have to grant superuser permissions)

Cd data
Cd misc
Cd wifi
Rm wpa_supplicant.conf

That'll delete the file where your wifi hotspots and passwords are saved. Reboot and see if you can connect to your router

Tried this last night, but when I did "CD WIFI" it said "can't cd wifi"

I was entering the text as it is in your post, and then hitting the enter key on the keyboard. What am I doing wrong?

Hi, paths in Linux are case-sensitive, did you write everything in lowercase?

Btw, instead of removing the wpa_supplicant.conf via the rm command, just rename it, by typing the following: mv wpa_supplicant.conf wpa_supplicant.conf.bak

For those having problems with the keyboard backlight not working,
I just reflashed with 1125g, wiped data/cache/dalvik cache and its working fine now. I usually restore all my data with titanium backup, but this time I didn't resore any settings! When I did restore the settings/cyanogenmod settings the keyboard backlight stopped working. So I just restored everything else besides the settings and it seems to be working fine now

And still working fine

Strange, I wonder what you did different from me, because I reflashed countless times with 1125G, wiped data/cache & dalvik cache. I only restore my apps + app data with Titanium Backup never system settings.
Next to wiping data & cache I always wipe system, maybe I shouldn't do that?

Wait a minute, you reflashed with 1125G and then performed the wipe? Is that what you're saying?

Because I always follow the entire install procedure described on the first page.

Ha! My bad, I first wiped everything, then flashed 1125g!!
Berfore restoring ur apps, does the keyboard backlight work?

Well I never actually verified that, because my main concern were the Wifi/Data problem and the Settings problem. On the first boot after a clean install Wifi and Data seems to be working, the same for saving settings. But from the moment I reboot the phone I start experiencing those problems.

But I never verified the Backlight issue without first installing my apps, I should give that a try.

Do you have the Data/Wifi problem? Probably not, if you aren't using the Gsm/CDMA network mode?

I'm on us verizon, using cdma.
How are you restoring ur data? I found titanium backup to be the easiest to restore specific files. To keep my keyboard backlight working after a clean reflash, I had to make sure not to restore any settings from my backup. Restoring the home screen and apps were fine, but as soon as (after reboot) I would retore the settings the keybord backlight would stop working

I also use Titanium Backup to restore my apps + the data for these apps. But other systemwide data/settings I always configure by hand. By restoring settings I presume you mean system-wide settings like Accounts, Display settings and stuff like that. Or are you indeed referring to application data for the installed apps?

I'm refering to the system settings, "[CM SETTINGS] CyanogenMod settings" (that's what its called in titanium backup) I think that's the one I excluded

Did you do a batch restore, or one by one?

I just wiped everything and reflashed with 1125G, and the keyboard backlight is working now (without any apps installed), even after a few reboots. Data seems to be working also. At the moment I'm not able to verify Wifi.

When I reinstall my system I always restore my apps via Titanium one by one, not in batch. This might be a good time to verify which app prevents the backlight from working correctly.

I was using all lowercase. I see now that it's uppercase C, then lowercase for the rest. Will try it tonight.

All lowercase is correct: the command cd should be lowercase and as it happens the full path is also lowercase /data/misc/wifi

Try this in the terminal (> is terminal prompt):
> su (grant superuser rights)
> cd /data/misc (goto folder /data/misc)
> ls -d (list directories of current folder i.e. /data/misc)

if you see wifi amongst the listed directories, you can continue, if not something is wrong
> cd wifi
> mv wpa_supplicant.conf wpa_supplicant.conf.bak
