A Plan For A Brighter Android Future

Now its going somewhere. I have had three people under 22yo ask me what phone to buy in the past couple weeks. I give my opinion, show them my phone, what it can do, and 3more droids were sold(2tbolts, one evo4g). Now getting asked about root. The desire is there, why not bring it out of the shadows a little. Instead of these guys putting exhausts on civics, I'm sure vz would be more than happy to get that money modding their phones. Personalizing their phones(hello kitty ROM?), just thinking as an outsider to our community.

Also, something i just thought of. How would you go about if you sbf back? Because it completely wipes your system and data and returns it to factory. Would there still be some way to have it unlocked again without calling and getting the code or whatever it is? Or would you just have the code baked into the sbf? If the later then you could run into a problem of people grabbing the sbf, flashing it to unlock the phone and the provider never knowing.

Your welcome, trying to help however I can and have no idea how other than thinking through possible issues.

I was thinking about this. You know how you have to activate your phone now when you sbf. Like press one to activate. Maybe that front end activation thing would either lock or unlock you. Because when you press one now, it checks your phone ID to their database and then initiates service. I dont see why they couldn't make it so that when it initiates service, it also pings back something to the phone that says its a DEV plan and for it to unlock.

OR.... you would have to unlock it again. And in that regard, maybe you call in. Or there is a website that you can go to get a new key, that is only a one time key and is specifically linked to your account.

Kinda like the way Chase bank verifies that you are you when you are on a different computer. Like with the identification code they email or text you. That could work.

I think the one time key would work best. Maybe have it on the vzw website that way you have to log into your account to get it? Just trying to help get details sorted that way if this does go to vzw there arent things that arent thought out ahead of time. Would look really bad not to have something that basic thought out in my opinion.

Agreed. That is a very good point. And that sort of system has already been engineered. Not hard to do at all. Plus it ensures that you have to go through the service provider to get your key. No keygen is going to produce the one time key that is backed by the service provider.

Good stuff on this one. Thank you for making me think about this.

lol on hello kitty ROM. hahahaha.

Yeah. I think a provider could make a lot of money by embracing those who want to customize their phones. They would just have to structure their plans so that they covered all the new expenses associated with it, while still making it affordable for the user, and enticing for potential customers to hop on.

The key is how costs can be reduced, and how profits can be maximized.

But you just had me thinking about something.

The company makes blurr. Why not fund a few devs ROM projects...? And then SELL ROMs and gives devs money and take a small cut. This may be blasphemy.. but hey.. I am just throwing it out there. call me out.. if you think this is wrong. I am just trying to think about they could make money.

There is deff money in ROMs and themes, and customization. We as end users already pay for it in the form of donations... why not cheap prices... and a ROOT market of these things, where the provider gets a little of the action.... IDK.... maybe??

My bank uses a one time password that is sent to me via text every time I log in on the mobile site. Something like this that could be linked to an individual account to activate a 'one time' key. Log/call in, and the key is pushed to your phone to activate root.

Or perhaps an app that would unlock a stock phone once the key is pushed? I realize this could be hacked, but that is where the encryption comes in. If banks use the one time option, I think it must be a safe way to verify a users staus.

On the data rollover, a plan that allowed rollover for one month only might work. Use the current month quantity first, then the leftover from the previous month. The rollover amount would expire at the end of the following month. I think that is how the rollover minute plan have worked in the past for some carriers.

I would /rage on the person that makes a hello kitty rom..... just throwing that out there.

That would be a good idea, especially if we could get someone like Cyanogen on board with that. However, with the roms i think it should be how it is now where its a choice to donate. Since i got on the GRD team ive flashed every d2 and dx rom out so far and there are some i would not be willing to pay for. Most of it was to test and make sure they worked right so that we could correctly tell people of bugs. However, there are a few that i would be more than willing to pay for (purchased the Liberty Toolbox to get 2.0 sooner and because Liberty is easily worth the $5 to me). I understand letting the devs get in on it but making them all pay is a little extreme to me because of just how many there would be. Look at how many roms are out for the d1 because of the unlocked bootloader. Testing them to find that perfect one would about make someone go broke if they were all purchase.

Edit because of post below: would also /rage on whoever made a Beiber theme >.>

Htc is allowing customers skins on sense, this just takes it a bit further if you want to overclock or remove bloat for speed(for the guys) or install Justin Bieber themed ROM for the girls. (Sorry if that's sexist:) And I think the devs would make a killing and become rockstars if there were an open market for rooted users.

That rollover, only one month was, exactly what I was thinking earlier but lost it in the rush of good ideas on here. Nice one!

Agreed. There is no way to do a trial with a ROM though in reality. So I guess it would have to be donation based. But how about this idea.

A ROM rating system, and the ROMs that get top vote per week, month... whatever. Could win a prize by VZN.. Where they will be featured in a commercial, and the ROM will be sold on their site. It would be exposure, PLUS money, plus traffic to their site. Great all around. Plus incentive for devs to work harder.

That is what I was attempting to propose for the support side too. A base of "volunteers" that would develope/support the root users in exchange for reduced and/or free fees for their own account. This community already has those people that do this, without any compensation at all except from those of us that donate to help them along. Imagine as a developer/support person you may be able to get your bill paid every month by doing what you are doing already? How much time do our Mods put in with no compensation right now? Imagine a reduced/free monthly bill for doing what you already are doing !!

This would help reduce the front end cost to the provider as well. Might entice them to consider the idea. The support come from a source that uses only opportunity cost as opposed to capital investment.

Those themed roms would make me sick too, but No one can deny that some things just inexplicably create huge amounts of cash to flow. You gotta play the game if you want to win.

Good except for one thing, why would someone go buy it when they can get it free? (why the droiddream thing worked so well...) It would still need to be donation based even on the VZW site. The advertising would be good though.

@aristoid
Interesting philosophy. Would be awesome. There still would be overhead for some type of training or accreditation to be worthy of support staff. Plus you have to be professional and what not... Interesting idea though, I like where you are going with it.

True. Once in circulation.. always in circulation. Ok. So the dev gets a cash prize. I think that a capital investment in the beginning for cash prizes for devs, would cause a huge boom in development and the benefits would far outweigh the costs. And a featured dev on commercials would really be cool. Think about how many LEGIT iPhone app devs are out there, who would see this open source android thing going down and hop on board. This world is not short of developers... there are alot out there.
