A Plan For A Brighter Android Future

I like the idea, but you're missing one major part of this that will eventually lead to it not working. That is, whats in it for the carriers. You make some great points, but you are just assuming these things will work. Show them in terms of monetary value why this will work. In the end, if we want this, we will have to pay, and we are all going to be willing to do that.

So... What are my ideas? Don't have special phones for rooters. Have it the ability of EVERY phone to be rooted. Have that rooting app, or kill switch for the lock a pay service. You want to root? Sure, but pay $5 or $10 to do it. Boom, thats $5-$10m in revenue to the carriers and manufacturers for little to no effort on their part. You want to remove some of those bloatware apps? Sure, the OS will allow you to do that... For $1 per removed app. You want to run a custom ROM. Sure, make a ROM & Theme Market for them. And set aside a percentage of those purchases for the carriers and manufacturers. They get millions more in their pockets, and suddenly the ROM developers are making money as well.

Present it like that, and you might get somewhere. Present them with hard, tangible numbers and they'll listen. Yeah, it will suck that we will have to pay for this, but in the end, it would be more than worth it, and would take Android to the levels we know it can be.

This is what I said in an earlier post, even though I misinterpreted the plan. What's in it for the carrier? They have no incentive to give you special phones just because you want it. The plan is good but has to be thought out better.

I guess I don't see it. It's a good idea but....
The points I brought up before plus:
5 to 10 even 20 million made off allowing people to remove bloatware doesn't come close to what the carrier makes on the contracts and FUTURE contracts of the bloatware providor.
The same 5-20 million doesn't account for overhead the carrier will take on to staff, train, monitor, etc, the program. The difference is like a nickle to the dollar for these carriers.
And mainly accountability. The plan outlines warranty service for rooted users. That's a lot more staffing, training, maintenance, overhead, for them.
There seems to be a lot of small to large details that a carrier would have to assume, along with manufacturers when they can simply say," no more warranty abuse" and crack down on it.

I'm not trying to be a jerk but I thinks it is fair to anticipate how a carrier may look at this instead of simply how we look at it.

I feel like some of those terms restrict and remove some of androids inherent openness..

The openness of android never really existed. This plan needs a little more work mainly the step of convincing the carriers. Presenting a petition will not sway them if it means more money spent for them.

And even at $5-$10 for the unlock is probably a lowball. Heck, you could likely charge $20 and they'd still see a ton of money coming in. And the bloatware providers will still have their contracts, because only those who root will be able to eliminate it, and you have to imagine part of those unlock fees will go to them to keep those contracts going. The bottom line of the bloat makers will not be affected by the rooting community removing their apps when we only make up a tiny fraction of the entire market.

You want to remove some of those bloatware apps? Sure, the OS will allow you to do that... For $1 per removed app.
If we agreed to that, they'd start installing 50 bloatware apps. We'd need some sort of stipulation to prevent that.
Well yes, obviously. But this is a start. And you'd have to think about it from the carrier's perspective. If they overload the phones with bloat, then everyone will be inclined to pay the unlock price. While that might bring in a lot of money in the short term, it will piss off all the bloat providers, and they won't be willing to sign those exclusivity contracts that give carriers $$, and will only develop for the market. In the end, it would be best for the carriers to minimize bloat in order to keep those lucrative deals they have.

Other then demonstrating that WugFresh is a pretty intelligent person, is anybody really taking any of this seriously. Because Verizon already has a business plan, I don't think WugFresh works for Verizon. So IMHO this thread is one mans fantasy, and it's never, ever going to happen.

Sorry to break up the dream with a little reality. Again no disrespect WugFresh but this is no more effective then a petition to unlock the bootloader.

Business plans that prove profitability are not fantasy's. They get reviewed and then they say yes or no, and hopefully say why they said no so it can be revised. I have worked in the business world. Companies consider thrid party sources all the time. It will depend on how good the IMC actually is. I may need help from more business minded people, particularly those who specialize in marketing.

This plan might not be the one that comes to fruition.. but parts of it.. maybe. I am not delusional. A solid proposal that proves monetary gains has a viable chance in my opinion. At the same time it could be turned down. But again.. even then, it can be revised, rethought, re presented.

Did you read the OP?

A: He specifically stated the plan needs more work, especially on the monetary side. This is just the framework of the plan.

B: Why are you fixating on the petition? It is at most a sidenote in the overall plan.

C: He spent a good chunk of the OP describing ways to make the plan financially beneficial to carriers, at a higher cost to us.

Not trying to be a jerk, but don't skim over the OP and then trash the entire plan based on a fixation on one tiny part of it.

Wug has obviously put a lot of time and thought into this, in an attempt to help ALL of us... at least show enough respect for that to give up 3 minutes of your time to read the whole thing.

[/rant]

Again, I apologize if I'm coming across as a jerk, that is not my intention. I can't come up with a nicer way to say what I feel needs to be said.

Wug, again, great work. Now let's all get on the same side and make this thing happen.

*EDIT - @hookbill..
And there will never be a black president.

Apologies, my point is that if no one ever makes an attempt to do anything, then nothing will ever happen. That applies to ALL of life.

What's the harm in brainstorming, and adding good, and filtering out the "not as good"?

If I never tried to ride a bike, I still wouldn't be able to. How many things aren't accomplished in life because they are never even attempted?

Again, I don't pretend to know either way. However anyone can practice foxhole religion( for those of us that served :) ) My point being it's fine to present open ideas. Maybe even have some of these questions implented into a solution. Wug did a great job expressing his thoughts into words. Do I think this will work? Honestly no I don't. Do I think it could garnish attention? Absolutely. But it was posted in a forum where most membors are already root users. I'm not a downer. I'm trying to look at this objectively.

Unfortunately, I think this thread demonstrates a major obstacle to our objective. Too many people are more willing to automatically write something off as impossible than to show support for the community they are a part of. If you don't like the plan, fine. If you have a better one, lets hear it. If you really don't believe anything we do will make a difference, why waste time reading this thread and posting just to say flat out that those who are trying to make a change are wasting their time?
I hate that I'm actually writing this post, because, frankly, this thread should be dedicated to improving and supporting the plan Wug put together. There are plenty of threads for debating whether or not anything could/should change to make our android experience better. This shouldn't be one of them.

This idea is a seed, it was planted less than a day ago. It's a little early for people to start complaining about there being no tree. I still have scars from learning to ride a bike, but I sure can now, and teach my daughters. +1 for this post.

Very well. I had hoped readers would see the logic in the questions I raised as I myself don't have the answers. I raised what could be questions from carriers. I don't think it will work and you have condemned those that think this. It's not all or nothing. The current format wont work. I know it's a work in progress as I hoped the questions would help us re adjust some focus. Even gaining attention at all would be a win for this. Good luck.
