I swear, the more people questioned this build the more the more the trolls came out to get their jollies.
How about this, for the one or two people who are actually going to read it and take heed. If someone was assaulting phones directly we'd know about it by now because, in case you haven't noticed, nobody here's shy about voicing their opinion, experiences, anger, fear, or good fortune. This file's been in the wild for long enough for some very smart people to have torn it apart and looked it over, and if they'd smelled anything fishy at any point in time they'd have cried foul. Look at the spat back yonder over the accusations of code theft in someone's ROM. Once someone tore it apart and confirmed, the spat was settled.
People look into these things, both before and after releasing them to the general public. Yes, there's always risk working with something you didn't make yourself. Tell me, how many of you have built your own car, starting by forging the frame, casting the engine yourself, etc.?
If the push is back on, wonderful. People who have been on the fence don't have to worry about it anymore, simply wait. If this isn't the final version that gets pushed, then okay, everyone will receive the update notification and get their phone upgraded anyway unless they're rooted and have OTA updates blocked, but in the meantime let those who want to
try it have fun with it while it lasts. If it turns out to be the real thing, then won't many of you feel foolish? Probably not, but who really cares? I'm not going to get satisfaction out of making people who were worried about damaging their $600 phones feel bad.
The possibility of malicious intent is there; it always is, and it always will be. Imagine what would happen if one coder got disgruntled and put a line of code into the OTA that would cause all phones that got the update to stop working at midnight, October 31st? Suppose nobody noticed it till it was too late? What's going to stop something like that from happening?
To answer an earlier post; rooting your Android device increases risk of attacks. Anyone who knows anything about Linux knows that. Running as Root allows much greater ability to use your system to its fullest potential, but it also allows
anything else the same access. This is why most Distros have as much as of possible running as spot instead. For those of us who know it already, we've accepted that risk. That's one reason why the warranty gets voided if you root. In essence, by rooting you're saying "this is mine and mine alone, I'm willing to take the risk of damaging it or having it screwed up for me."
But this is about
this file and the controversy surrounding it. It does what it says it's going to, and it works with the stock recovery, which is amazing if it's a hack. If you don't think it's official, don't install it. If you do, but don't think it's what's going out, you are under no obligation to install it. Accusing the Moderators and News Team of posting things that are misleading, or causing controversy, or in any way assaulting them is probably inappropriate. Miami and CK and Hook and Cakes and everyone I can't recall names of right now have done us an amazing service by bringing this site to us, and by giving us their time and energy and (let's face it) money by running this site. Props to those who have supported the site with donations; I can't afford to, so I'm doing my best to take some of the pressure off those who can. Apologies again to CK if anything I've said prior to this post made it sound like he was giving all faith to Pete. I was trusting in Pete. His rooted ESE81 was my first ROM and maybe that means my faith is misplaced, but it's there until I'm given reason to doubt him.
Early adopters of anything are always the ones at greatest risk -- of bugs, of exploits, of potential failures. That's exactly what using this update made you if you used it: An early adopter. If you couldn't wait for the OTA to be pushed to you then you were adopting it early. It doesn't matter what anyone, including me, might say in regards to that; you adopted early. Yes, it came from a trusted source, but that doesn't mean there isn't a problem. Would I trust my phone to it? Yes. Of course I can say that and not do it because I'm running a ROM, so what does that mean? It means I prefer what I have to whatever Motorola is going to design and Verizon is going to approve. Why? It's simple. It's
my phone and
my decision. Your phone is yours, as is your decision.
So stop trolling, stop yelling at the moderators and admins, and for crying out loud either get off the fence and install this or don't. Everyone here you should be listening to will help you out if you choose to and nobody here you should give a sh*t about will blame you for waiting. It's
your phone.
Thank you CK for posting this story in the first place and all your work on it afterward, as well as all your work beforehand. Thank you Hook and Miami for everything you've done both for the forum-goers both in and outside of this story. Thank you, everyone else, for all your help and for making this place happen and be such a great place to come for help, information, and access to things I didn't even know existed before I got my Droid in the first place.
And thank you for everyone who read this and then didn't flame me for ranting.
I now return you to your regularly-scheduled thread posts.
