ALERT! 2.2 FroYo Circus continues...FRG01B is Official get it here.

Here is a quick step by step from one newbie to the rest. Its a copy paste of multiple posts.

1. Root phone using any of the root methods. (I used the pay Easy Root App. $1 is totally worth it.)
2. Download the updated version file. (Pick the one you want. I used the Op's 2.2)
3. Rename file to update.zip
4. Download the file to the sd card
5. Restart the phone by pressing power and x at same time.
6. After you get the yellow triangle, hit the volume up and camera button at the same time
7. Use the d-pad to navigate to the “apply: update.zip” option, and choose the file you just dragged onto your microSD card.
8. When done, choose Reboot system.
9 Verify everything is working.
10. Reroot, if you choose. (I did.)
(Optional) Do a battery pull for good measure.

Followed these instructions to the letter. I had manually updated to last week's FRG01B, and wanted to try this week's FRG01B for ****s and giggles. The install went smoothly, and all my data/apps remained intact. Time will tell if this "full" version works better than the "patched" version, though I didn't have too many issues to speak of with last week's FRG01B.

I forced the update last week and preferred the newer "clean" version. I just bought Easy Root for .99 cents and installed it. Your instructions worked perfectly, I just didn't reroot after - my preference. :)

Same Here!

Hook and CK are disagreeing over the fact that since only person has received the "official" OTA posted at the start of this thread it's a hoax.

Well I have noticed the comments about who got the new OTA and who didn't.
And I did install this new one over last weeks update using the update.zip method without rooting.
The only thing I noticed was the no redraw issue with LP as I had in the previous version.
So.. what's everyone thinking?
That this is all BS?

and I type this from my Droid.
That it's not actually official since nobody else is reporting getting it. We all trust Pete, but we don't know Lance. Of course, for all we know this was a leak from VZW who didn't have a contact inside the community and wished to get one.

The possibilities are endless here on what it could be, from malicious to the real deal. Miami says it's fake, CK stands by Pete, Pete has already had his say, Lance hasn't stepped forward to defend the story, and without anyone else getting this update (or the other), we have no real information except speculation. It doesn't look very good, even though the file seems to be exactly what it says it is.

So.. what's everyone thinking?
That this is all BS?
Or worse. Any time you put software with that much access on your phone from a source that you don't trust 100% you are taking big chances. We all have to make that call as individuals.

I think this circus is easily explained.

VZW devs pushed out the Froyo OTA. The devs sent the obligatory email to the VZW powers that be, that the Froyo OTA was started. Mr Marketing VP had a cow! D2 is about to hit the shelves with Froyo. We need to move units! How are we going to do that if everyone has Froyo. Stop the Froyo OTA!

So then the question arises at VZW ... how do we explain starting it and stopping it?

Mr Marketing VP being the genius he is sez... no need to explain. Leak another build. Let the Android community go crazy figuring it out. As they find flaws, leak a super secrete one off build OTA to start another crazy buzz. While they are going crazy trying to get to the bottom of all this, the entire Android community is paying hyper attention to us. D2 hits the shelves. The crowd goes crazy to scarf up the only VZW Froyo available. Then when the D2 dust settles... we release Froyo to the community at large

The preceding has been the delusional thoughts of someone who knows little of Android, Moto or Verizon but a little more about Fortune 500 America. YMMV

This might be real close to the truth. Did not make any sence to update DROID 1 when DROID2 is hitting shevles. Make a lot of sence to me. HOPE something like this is all it is.

Great fiction. Far from the truth.

So far, the clean install has smoothed out my phone tremendously. Even after just one hour on the patch install, the phone was sluggish, especially on the homescreen. The clean install is much smoother, and everything is much more responsive. Hardware keyboard seems to work correctly too now, which is very nice. *knock on wood*

I have no idea where FRG22 came from, but I'm going to stop worrying about it now :)

Same here. My phone is running MUCH better now. I still have easy root too and am leaning towards rerooting to get rid of some of the dumb apps I never use like amazon mp3. If I root, delete that then unroot, will it stay gone?

I am actually rooted with frg22. So what do u guys all think?? I'm wondering whether more rom devs are gonna decide to base future roms on frg01b or frg22. Personaaly, I havnt really been able to tell differences on either build. Bot the ones I tried were the roms that meti updated. Not sure if I should care about being on a firmware that's more or less obsolete on a mass scale. Lol I'm just wondering if it might be worth going back to 01b or not or using the one that's been updated on this thread. But god knows which build is gonna end up more practical for modding. Maybe I'm overthinking it all . :/ what do u guys think..

It makes sense, but it doesn't explain how only one person had the update.

I just installed FROYO myself, because I was tired of waiting. I wish I would have read this thread in it's entirety before doing that; I definitely don't feel so good regarding all of this.

The file does what it's "supposed" to do, so if it is malicious then I'm thinking it was either done by someone from VZW/Moto, or someone managed to get their hands on the update and have their way with it. Is there anyway of checking the file afterhand to see if it's malicious?

I speak here with the utmost respect to everyone who moderates and administers this site. But when a moderator takes a step to create a thread with the title that this one does, it has special meaning. You guys are well respected, and your word has extra weight because of that respect. As such, you also have more responsibility to make sure that the posts you create are undisputably correct. In the case of this particular thread, because there are so many other rumors being passed around, that has always been totally impossible to do.

The big concern here is that we aren't talking to hardened ROMers who have accepted responsibility for their hacking and are prepared to deal with problems what come up. We are mostly in this thread dealing with people who don't want to root and who basically want bone stock Droid with the bone stock Froyo. In that, I respectfully submit that this thread has never been anything but misleading. Bone stock Froyo has never been released yet, and it won't be released until it is being massively delivered as a live OTA from Verizon's servers.

Again, my deepest respect to those of you administering this sight, but in my mind, this thread has always been a mistake. I just hope there is no long-lasting issue created for any of the trusting recipients of this current form of FRG01B.

Hmm...Here I am a noob regarding phones, finally got brave and installed a leaked OS, and rooted. Then I get on this 45-page thread about whether it's "real" or a hack of some sort, and my Droid is running faster and smoother than it ever has. If this OS is a hack, I'll buy pizzas for the guys who put it together; they did a fantastic job. dancedroid

Agreed. I think this thread only adds to the confusion. This should all be cleared up shortly when VZW releases an official upgrade.
