Android 2.1 Update Rolls Out For Motorola Droid!

I'm waiting just because I have never had an OTA before and want to see what it's like. I hear 2.2 has been delayed so like Hayley's comet it may be my last chance for a long time. :)

I manually updated to the new version last night. I keep reading that this version is supposed to include pinch to zoom for the browser. I cannot get the pinch zoom functionality to work in the browser. I didn't have much time to play with it, but I tried it on ESPN.com and CBSSPORTS.com.

The pinch zoom does work in the gallery and on Google Earth. Haven't tried it with Google Maps yet.

Is anyone else having problems with the pinch to zoom in the browser?

Double check it on a non-mobile site. Most mobile versions of web pages will not zoom at all, even on 2.0.1. Try the full version of the site or try a different site.

It works fine for me on all sites that aren't a mobile version.

Thanks, I'll try that. I just got my Droid last week. So this may be a dumb question, how do you force the browser to go to the regular site and not the mobile? I am pretty sure whenever I try to go to ESPN.com it is taking me to the mobile version.

I could not wait anymore. especially with all these posts. So, at work, I got the update on my phone, copied it to root directory, rebooted into recovery and applied the update.zip. It completed in a few minutes. I then rebooted my phone, got to the red droid eye where it say for a few moments....I stayed patied and VOILA! 2.1! everything works...need to do more testing, but after work. My advice, update manually!

You can't force it with the stock browser. But most mobile versions will have a link somewhere on the page for the full version of the site. I'm not sure about ESPN though, I seem to recall them not offering the full version on mobile phones. Could be wrong though.

If you get Dolphin Browser from the market (free), you can set it to identify itself as a desktop machine so it forces full versions. I have it installed just for that reason.

Pinch zoom works for me with the default browser. At first I thought the same thing, but if u connect to EPSNs website from a mobile device it loads there mobile version and I think you can zoom in. That happened to me on a few other mobike websites like soccer etc..

Same here...i was reading the posts to make sure everything was OK and then reading it more and just staring at my droid didnt get me the OTA so i gave in and did the manual update...didnt really want to.but i fell in with the crowd.

See I'm stuck. I want the update real bad and i know the manual update is easy but i kind of want to wait for that notice. I'm also curious as to when i will get the notice so i don't want to do a manual install. However i have a feeling if its not here tonight I'm gonna break down.

I caved in too. I love it except I don't understand why the Milestone got more home screens and we didn't. I got kind of paranoid in thinking that maybe the OTA version will have them! LOL!

If you want to disable mobile sites in the native browser

Did some searching around and no one on this forum has posted how to do it.

-Open browser
-Type "about:debug" in the address bar - press "go" Nothing will happen, this will only enable more options in the menu
-go to menu -> more -> settings
-scroll down to "UAString"
-Select "desktop"

your good to go

I have been using Dolphin browser but didn't know about that functionality. I'll give it a try. Thanks for the help.
