Android 2.1 Update Rolls Out For Motorola Droid!

Manually updated Saturday. Gmail initially didn't sync but is now behaving. Perhaps the 10 minute battery pull helped, but I don't really know.

One cool thing I noticed that I haven't seen mentioned is that the camera now geotags photos. Was I just missing that before?

One bad thing is my battery life seems to have gotten shorter. Any clues why? Any suggestions. I had downloaded Google Earth (it is pretty cool) so I got rid of it just in case it was a cause of the problem. But the battery didn't even last half the day with little use.

I downloaded an app called Juice Defender from the market. It seems to have drastically increased my pattery life. I also use an app called auto memory manager. Between the 2 of them I've more than doubled my battery life over stock. Even running Chevy's 1.0 oc kernel.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, Live Wallpapers also suck up battery power.

Thanks, I am trying Juice Defender. I haven't used live wallpapers, sticking with beautiful Northern New Mexico scenery.

No actually they dont affect your battery much at all.

Speech to text is the big win.

BUT

This update appears to be pushing the limits of processor or something. Whenever I launch an app now, it stutters open...jerky...like a movie played at 6-8 frames per second. Does the same when closing.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Are you (heaven help me for using this word) (:icon_ nono2:)... rooted? When I looked at auto memory manager, it stated you had to be rooted to use all the functions...

Are you using a different launcher then stock? If so have someone send you a text or message and pull down you notification bar (for some reason this stops the fc message from showing for a sec)..you should be able to hit your menu button on the bottom, go into settings then applications then filter by all (more menu button)..find your launcher and hit clear defaults...should give you and option now to pick which launcher to use when you hit your home button...hope this helps

i had the same thing when i had 'launcher2.apk' installed. i got lucky because i had my task manager running on startup and it was in my notification bar. i had to be quick, but i had to pull down the bar and do whatever i needed to do in between the lag time of you pressing "force close" and when it shows up again on the screen. you gotta go to settings/manage applications///click "launcher" and Clear Defaults under "Launch by Default" menu.

so i guess if you get to settings somehow youll be good. Launcher2.apk doesnt work anymore with the new update. neither does Helix Launcher2

thank you guys. luckily i had advanced task killer running in the notification bar and when i dragged down and opened it it listed all my applications. clicked on held on Settings app and chose Switch To then it was all easy from there.

thanks again guys, i was getting nervous!

Got it and love it!

Got THE upgrade last night, but all the parts didn't really work until sometime this morning. Nearly all the features that most bugged me about the Droid are now gone. No mare tapping the screen to enlarge or reduce images and webpages. And the photo gallery is now a great pleasure to share with others rather than an embarrassment. It used to be nearly impossible to show pictures to anyone because of the menu that would appear on each picture when moved from one to the next, obscuring the subject for several seconds. I'm sure I haven't discovered everything yet, but I like what i see so far. Top of my next wish list: more punctuation on the virtual keyboard so I don't have to toggle between screens. Thank you, Google gods! :icon_ banana:

I don't know if it's been there all the time, and I just didn't notice...

But after getting the OTA installed, when I pick up the phone after it's been sitting for a while, I press the power button and when the lock screen comes up -- in the top right corner it says "Verizon Wireless."

Is that something new, or did I just miss it before.

If they add more punctuation on the virtual keyboard you will mess up typing a lot more than you do now. The buttons are small enough they don't need to make them smaller.
