Apparent GPS Failure

I've found out with the "GPS System", you can't use app killer and then go into GPS. With google maps you can't kill it with the ap killer and then start it up...the gps won't find it.

Just leave everything on in the background unless it's something you know ABSOLUTELY burns **** up. It's not the iPhone...It makes your battery last...unlike the iPhone...BOOM!

I am going to a store on Monday to get the 51683 PRL
Thta is the one that works.
I have 65073
I will see if the can push the 51683 number to me,I hope it works.
I have a friend in St Pete with that prl and his works great.
I will kep you posted.

awesome
i really appreciate it
good luck

I was lucky enough to have a GPS signal for about two miles today. :)

Just to help keep the info coming.. my wife's Eris also has issues with google maps . It says she's in Nepal. :icon_eek:

Her number is also an ex Alltel number.

ah.....
i hear that NEPAL is LOVELY this time of year :)

If the new PRL# will fix this problem, why don't /won't / can't, Verizon just push this thru for us and be done with it? It seems so simple or am I missing something?

if they push all those PRLs through... they'll cause every one of those phone to NEVER look for an OLD ALLTEL tower again... which will "crowd" verizon towers... a bad thing, especially during our "BUSY" season in this part of the country.

and.....
there are many more alltel towers are around here
and verizon "paid" a lot to have some of their phones use them
there is much to consider for verizon

ok now im confused. why then , if this is a bad thing are you trying to get your PRL changed? Also whats the difference from us getting that PRL and new verizon customers getting it? With your theory of " overcrowding " towers wouldnt new verizon customers overcrowd the towers then?

i didn't mean to be confusing
in the end, my point is: i haven't a clue as to what is going on
all i know is that alltel customers on the west coast of florida.....
thousands of folks
who buy the droid and keep their old number... have no gps
100% of us.... no gps
even though, we are paying verizon just what you did.... for the phone and the monthly service

i truly believe the FIX is easy.... but, that no one in verizon talks to anyone else to GET THIS DONE

sad..... but, true

ok now im confused.
well, so far this is all just speculation since a handful of us here have only been able to get bits of info from a few "lower tiered" VZW employees...

BUT we have to assume that since our Alltel PRLed GPS occasionally functions depending on location, we are indeed being "dumped" to Verizon towers. THEREFOR, it should be assumed that VZW PRLed phones would get dumped to Alltel towers for phone calls during peak hours, overcrowding, and new customers (Verizon had been paying Alltel to use Alltel towers for VZW customers long before the merger). like Greg said, Verizon paid for those towers - they are not going to abandon them or do something to tilt everyone towards VZW towers at once. for one, Alltel customers would likely notice a loss of reception ...this is BIG business; they won't hastily go and fix a problem knowing another will spring up.

i remember someone already trying to have the VZW PRL pushed to their phone OTA and it did not accept it.

switching everyone to a VZW PRL seems like a viable/easy fix to our theory, but i don't think it is the best solution. i would imagine Verizon would rather figure out some way for the Alltel towers to "function properly" before forcing all of our phones to saturate VZW towers. continuing to distribute the customers over two networks is likely why the integration went so seemless in the first place (GPS aside).

Well Verizon isnt doing much to help this confusion or or settle our worries about this problem thats for sure. I will be heading back to TN this week so as soon as i get towards north FL my GPS will start working . I get to feel like a regular verizon customer instead of a red headed step child :)

It has been over one week, and changing my plan and tel number to verizon from alltel has solved the gps problem completely in Polk county, FL, which was working horribly before.

i'm glad to hear this
still waiting to hear about my account change from VERIZON CORPORATE

Worked with Verizon Mgmt and one of their Data Support consultants. They confirmed that the issue is with the Alltel towers and the AGPS syncing. Ironically, the Alltel towers use Motorola switches and the Verizon towers use Alcatel ones. They are supposed to be making a push to my phone within the next 48 hours that will put me exclusively on Verizon towers. This should fix the GPS issue but will also affect voice quality and signal in the more rural areas, until the Alltel issue is resolved and everyone is pointed to all of the towers. As noted earlier, I had changed my phone number to a VZW number to avoid these issues. VZW called me back up later today and asked if I would like my old number back, if they could retrieve it. As I have already sent out my new number, I declined, but I thought it was a nice gesture on their part.
I will post again when the push occurs. I am also trying to get them to set up a way for everyone who wants to have this done can.

I've been following this thread. I went for days not been able to connect I liven in south east Florida. I follow some suggestions here. I was one of those that did have gps working when I bought it. I installed some apps that used gps and somewhere along the line my gps stopped working. So I removed every app that made use of the gps function. I also uninstalled the Google maps update, I also removed the build in power widget and did a restart on the phone and has been working since for 2 days now.

Well guys i got my GPS working, for good. Locks every time now in Tampa /w an Alltel plan and phone number. The solution was as people were speculating. I swapped my Alltel PRL for the newest Verizon PRL 51716. This fixed my GPS, now i get a lock in seconds.

The steps to change the PRL are not that hard, but a bit technical (and much easier of you have used QPST before).

Also it seems that someone on the google support forums was able to get verizon to push his phone PRL 51716. He said this worked, and sounds like a much easier method than the one i used.
