Bionic build 5.9.901....Initial impressions......and what we know so far

Fails if I try to install over 893

I've been on .901 for several days now, and so far it has been pretty good. Data connectivity has definitely been better, but battery life does seem a little worse. I have yet to refreeze my bloatware since updating , so I'm wondering if that is causing increased power consumption.

As for data, the biggest change I have encountered is that it is far more conservative with handoffs in fringe 4G areas. Also, I was streaming music yesterday while driving on the interstate, and where I would normally transition from 3G to a stable 4G area (west of DC), it stayed in 3G and never transitioned.

After around 10 minutes, I finally stopped streaming, and sure enough, it switched to 4G within a few seconds, and stayed there. This approach seems like a band-aid, but it's better than the drops and hangs I was frequently encountering before, so it works for me.

Other than that, the camera seems to be greatly improved. Haven't noticed much else.

I had been on 5.7.893 for a couple of months. I found it solved about 80-90% of my data issues. It was not perfect, some days better then others.

It took a bit to reconnect data after a phone call. Did not seem to transition well between WiFi and mobile network. I found best to just leave WiFi off all together.

For Christmas Santa brought me a way back to the update path. I used the 12 step method outlined on another forum. Worked great and I was at 5.5.893 stock and on the upgrade path for about 30 mins. Then I installed 5.9.901 retained root and for the last 24 hours my phone has been doing great. Data seems solid, WiFi to mobile network hand off fast and smooth. Reconnects to data instantly after a phone call.

I know different areas have different results. I am currently in St Petersburg Florida and am thrilled. I had been spending a lot of time in Ithaca NY on 5.7.893. They have marginal or non existent 4g there. 5.7.893 worked OK, but definitely had more problems there. I look forward to seeing how well 5.9.901 works.

As I said, I thought 893 solved 80-90% of my data issues. After 24 hours I would say 901 solves 99-100% of my issues.

I do not run juice defender or any battery saving apps. I need data 100% of the time for email and text (I use Google voice). I miss my [K]in3tx Rom from Th3ory and hope DroidTh3ory comes through with a 901 version, or Liberty does.

If your considering going to 901 from 5.7.893 I would say go for it. I am glad I did. I still consider myself on the upgrade path as 901 was not leaked but pushed out by Verizon. Of course the key words there are 'I consider myself'. Still I think it is a safe bet.

IMHO I think 901 is awesome.

There is a modified kint3x rom that will work on the 901 update, it's posted over at rootzwiki.

Oh wow! I am so happy! Can it get any better then this? (yes, unlocked bootloader)

Next your going to tell me VZW is releasing ICS for the Bionic next week. Okay, now I am dreaming.

Lol yeah that's a dream. But I still haven't recurved the update to 901

Sorry, probably not, I think Dhacker will have it out of alpha before Verizon releases it.

Well I have been on 5.9.901 for two days now and have not lost data once. I jump back and forth between 3G and 4G when I am home and I think that was the issue before.

Data drops again today on 901.

I think it's time for me just to accept that a baseband update won't fix this for me. The only way for it to be fixed is for vzw to expand LTE coverage where I live. I am literally at the edge of their LTE cover here. According to their coverage map walking a few steps from the house will take me out of it.

Hopefully they'll expand LTE in Lansing again and I'll be deeper in, and the data drops will stop.

Lansing, MI I assume? (as opposed to Lansing, IL)

I'm thinking you're definitely right, that the baseband fixes won't do it. Looking at VZW's LTE coverage map, there's still a lot of country for them to roll it out to, and where they have it, it's still spotty. I doubt your phone is at issue.

If it's Lansing, MI, I'm sure they will add towers over time --having MSU there (and state legislature) is likely a big incentive to them. 3G may be slower (I often turn my 4G off for battery life) but 3G on the Bionic is much faster than my previous Droid 2, and I'm sure that's true compared to a lot of previous-gen phones.

I'm in GR myself. I've just gotten the extended battery for my Bionic, so I may turn on LTE more and do some testing.

This is what the Bionic should have launched with ,I have not lost 4g once and the battery is much better now. I lost data and was giong from 4g to 3g at least 3-4 times an hour before it seemed ,it was in one of those mode's at random every time I looked at the phone and now 4g all the time. I was going to grab a different phone but I think now the Bionic is what it should be.

I dont buy this. My TB works just fine and has been doing so since its release day. The other day I actually dropped data literally 100 ft from a Verizon store, lol, from full 4g to nothing.

It's clear the problem is hardware related, the Bionic antennae are junk. Most likely the. 901 update juiced them up as high as possible, hence the results some are seeing. I can only hope that Verizon would add more juice to the towers, but with the Bionic becoming an old phone by the day - it seems doubtful.

I don't buy what you're saying either. I get this best signal at work over anyone else that has a Verizon phone. And the brand new Droid razr that just came out...same chip set and processor as the bionic so the bionic isn't outdated yet.

Some people are just impossible to please, at least 95% of the reviews for this latest update are positive. I'm absolutely convinced that those that are still having problems, either have a hardware deficiency in their device that will most likely be fixed with a replacement from verizon or their particular spot in the network sucks.

Well I can state for a fact on my part that the 5.9.901 update actually made my Bionic slightly less performance-wise than the stock 5.5.893 OTA is..... or when it was running KIN3TX on the leaked 5.7.893...

Currently on the 5.5.893 OTA stock my Bionic is running flawlessly, absolutely not even one dropped 4G signal (not even one toggle down to 3G as yet), and the camera works very well......thus had no desire or need to flash the unofficial 5.9.901 OTA....however based off of all the high praise many were giving that unofficial OTA I decided to flash it, unfortunately for me it did not give me any better camera, no better performance of system or battery life, and has actually dropped from 4G to 3G several times...So there is nothing wrong with my particular Bionic as is evident by how flawlessly it runs on leaked 5.7.893 and 5.5.893 OTA, but for some odd reason it just does not perform as well on the 5.9.901 OTA .....so you cannot make a blanket statement that it's caused by a defective device or poor area reception
