Downgrade to 902 - No app or data loss

Hey folks,

I had an issue with the flash on my Bionic, and it wound up bricking my phone (it's fixed now using RSD Lite and all that jazz). I had previously been running rooted Eclipse v3, but I have no idea if that had anything to do with the failure. I don't remember the specifics, but when I ran the runme.bat, the first command completed successfully (I think), but the second command returned something on the lines of "device offline". Any thoughts on what caused that? Side note, I am confused as what's the difference between 235 and 232 usage in your OP.

I also tried to RSD back to stock 905 right off the bat since I noticed that your suite takes care of rooting the device. My battery died (shame on me for trying this with 45% battery) mid-flash back to stock and it took me a while to get it back in functioning order. I had a lot of trouble getting past the different img flashes in the stock 905. I think I was stuck on grfs for the longest time and preinstall and would return a lot of FAIL errors. I then ran RSD as an administrator, and the program blew through the installation. You might want to add that to your OP to save some people time in the unlikely case of a brick.

Should I attempt the ICS push again now that I'm back to stock? Also, could I see some screenshots of someone's running version (shame on me for not reading the entire thread)?

Thanks guys,

CC

I'm sure the rom caused some issues. You had safestrap installed I assume? That would cause problems. No idea why it wouldn't find the device for you. Matt has said that if that happens you need to wipe the cache and if it still doesn't work you may have to factory reset which will wipe the data. I've not seen that problem myself. I'll add a note about RSD having to run as administrator. I'm working on revamping the House of Bionic to use a private copy of RSD but it's going to be a few days before it's done. I'll also be adding an updated root method thanks to sargentmajord. So some improvements are coming.

As for whether you should try to update again, sure why not? :) Just stick to 232. 235 will lock you onto that one build until a new one is released. You can never go back to any build lower than 235 once you make that jump.

Ahhh...Safestrap. I suppose that makes sense. I didn't even think about that. I'm just going to chalk up the failed attempt to that. I'll try it again tomorrow I think once I find some screencaps. I suppose I worded the question weird, because I'm definitely not keeping all this VZW bloatware. Functionally, what's the difference between 232 and 235? On a side note, as far as backing up apps goes, I had Titanium; is that the best (or even good) option for restoring apps in a batch?

I honestly hate how support was dropped for the Bionic, especially since I haven't even had this phone for a year. :|

Thanks,

CC

I updated the OP with some additional warnings/suggestions. This is an iterative process. :) Functionally I don't think there's any difference between 232 and 235. I'm sure bugs were fixed, optimizations made, etc, but, the difference isn't huge. Removing bloatware in ICS is easy...even without root. Go into settings, apps, all, find what you wanna disable, select uninstall updates if it shows that, and then disable. Done. :) As for titanium, yes, it's good for backing up and restoring apps. BUT....one thing to be careful of. Do NOT restore system data from GB on ICS. You will cause immense problems.

Thanks for those updates! I definitely understand the iterative process of writing a guide. That's a good enough argument for keeping 232, I'll run with that. I was running Spearmint Gummy for a few months, and I loved it besides the very shoddy radio and camera; I should assume this is much more refined? Is it safe to restore app data on Titanium or should I do just the apps?

Should be ok restoring app data. Personally I'd wipe the cache and dalvik after the app and app data restore.

Thanks for throwing those changes in the OP! I know what you mean by iterative writing, trust me. That's a decent enough argument to keep 232, honestly. Compared to the gummy spearmint ROM, I assume the 4G/3G works consistently? I loved everything else about that ROM, so I'm excited to throw this guy on. Should I not restore app data, or just system data?

Thanks,

CC

OK, I've bricked my phone. I used Safestrap to try to do the install even though the OP said not to. It was an oversight on my part. I did back up my data with Titanium though.

Any help on getting my it restored?

Thanks,
KP

Just not the system data. Apps should be fine. Like I said, wipe cache and dalvik if you're paranoid. :)

Need to know more info but yes we can help. What version were you on before you did this? What version were you going to? The answer to those questions will determine how we can help.

I was on .905 and was going to .232.

I'm a newbie at updating ROMs so I'm at a loss on how to recover from this. :icon_eek:

Thanks again

Ok, safest thing is to follow the OP instructions for full fxz to 905. That will bring you back to factory 905. You will lose data and apps. Given the state of your phone trying to recover now with data is very unlikely.

When I try to run the RunMe app, here's what I get

Just an Fyi. Sargentmajord and I have put a lot of work into a massive rewrite of the house of Bionic. Once I get the version he built I can merge it with what I've been working on. I think people will like the new script. I'll have to host it in multiple places as he wants me to include the full fxz as well as 232 and 235 updates for an all in one solution. Unzip and go. I have a hybrid fxz I built as well that'll be included so the zip will be pretty large. I may write an installer for it while I'm at it. We'll see how much time I have. The full zip will be augmented with smaller updates going forward so people won't have to download the full zip every time. It'll be a day or two before I can make that happen. I think people will like the improvements.
