Droid 2 Global ROOT, CUSTOM RECOVERY & SIM UNLOCK Tutorial

Does it take like 10 minutes? I cant tell if the program is frozen or not.
It shouldn't. The directions in the tutorial indicate that if it is taking more than a few minutes to force stop the app and run it again, but since it rebooted I'm going to assume that it was successful.

Check your app drawer. Do you see a program called "Superuser Permissions"?
I am doing the test to see if I am rooted correctly and the program shows download / upload both @ aprox 1kb..

Is this correct? I dont know what I am looking for on this..
Did a popup appear asking you to allow root access? What the Wireless Tether app does is turn your phone into a mobile hotspot. Once you've clicked the "Press to start tethering" button, check what WiFi connections are available using your computer; you should see "AndroidTether" listed if it's working correctly.

Worked like a champ! dancedroidTether worked well with my Ipod touch, gonna try my PS3 later today (I'm stuck in a hotel for 2 months). Right now I'm just looking to change the speeds, and maybe get mess around with some themes and icons.

I'm not a programmer, so a lot of what I'm reading makes no sense to me so I apologize for asking what has been asked before.

What ROMs currently work well with D2G?
What do I need to avoid to prevent bricking?
What is a good program to change CPU settings?
Where can I find the best "how to" to restore if I do mess something up?

A TON of great info in these forums, Thanks to everyone who knows what they are doing and helps those of us who don't.

Root/Wireless tethering hickup

I downloaded z4root on my D2G, with 2.4.330, pull out the apk file and put it in the root on the sd drive. I allowed unknown apps to be installed, and allowed usb debugging (although I'm not sure this was necessary since I downloaded to the phone and installed from there). Then I ran z4root and followed the prompts, including selecting permanent root. The install seemed to go fine, and the phone rebooted and told me I had root. The superuser app appears in the app list. Next, I downloaded and installed the latest version of wireless tethering and here's where my problem is.

When installing wireless tethering, the program tells me "No Access Control. Sorry, but your kernel does not have all necessary features for the access control feature of this application. Access control will be disabled." I continue with the installation, grant root privileges, and tell it to start tethering. My wifi on my xp laptop sees the android tether signal from the phone ,but just won't establish the connection, try as it may. The wireless tethering app says it has superuser rights, so I'm not sure what the deal is. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the wireless tethering app with the same result. Any ideas?

I got mine unlocked and then bought setcpu but it seems as though its not getting root access. My battery seems like it might even be worse then it was before rooting?
Any help on getting setCPU setup so it can underclock?

Serious noob here. I have read through the majority of posts on rooting the Droid 2 global. Is there anything more that I need other than the z4root? Do I need to install other aps? Superuser? Bootstrap? Titanium? What about nandroid backup? I think I saw possibly another ap or two that other people have installed. I guess I just want to know exactly what I need root my D2G.

I am not trying to offend anybody, I just don't want to end up bricking the phone.

btw, AWESOME site. I have learned more from this site than by just playing with the phone. THANK YOU!!!

z4root will automatically install the Superuser app.
Post #16 also mentions five files. I only see one file in the z4root I downloaded from the author's link.
That's for the manual method. z4root automates the process so you only need one file.
Bootstrap? Titanium? What about nandroid backup?
These are all things you can install after rooting. Bootstrap gives you custom recovery, Titanium is an app that lets you backup individual apps, and nandroid lets you make complete backups of your phone. Nandroid isn't a separate file; the capability to make nandroid backups is included within Bootstrap. The instructions to install it are in the first post. Titanium Backup can be installed from the market.

Does unroot fully restore me to original state

I've been reading out rooting phones. I really want to get rid of all that bloatware, like Blockbuster, off my phone, and I know that I can only do that if the phone is rooted. I also read that rooting the phone will prevent you from getting further system updates. Can I root the phone, remove all the junk and then restore it with z4root to resume getting the updates.

No. Unrooting with z4root will only undo the root. If you remove bloatware, you will have to restore the bloatware as well before unrooting. Rooting won't prevent you from getting updates, but removing bloatware will.

What I would recommend is either a.) leave the bloatware alone and use LauncherPro to just hide it, or b.) freeze the bloatware with Titanium Backup so you can unfreeze it if you need to get the system updates.

I have tried 7 times to use the z4root and no luck. Unknown sources is checked, USB debugging is checked. The apk is copied directly to the sd card. I get the z4mod screen and have tried to do permanent root. It just sits there and runs with "Running exploit in order to obtain root access..." at the bottom of the screen. I have let it run for 10 minutes. Stopped the application and tried over and over, letting it run different amounts of time....still no root access.

sigh......

I have a DROID2 GLOBAL, Android version 2.2

Any thoughts?

I d/l the zroot file to my computer...see the apk file. NOw I am unsure of how to get it to my phone. I have phone connected and it recognizes the phone as removable disk (G:) Now I am not sure where to put the apk file. There are a bunch of folders listed under this drive from the phone.

Put it directly onto the G drive. The "removable disk" is the SD card in your phone. When you disconnect the phone and open the "Files" app on your D2G, the .apk will show up on your SD card

z4root

z4root worked great, took a little longer than 2 mins but it worked nonetheless, just wanted to say thanks!

I have debated on rooting ANY my phones forever, but wasn't sure I was comfortable with it. This guide was awesome about breaking it down and easing me into it.. Thanks for the awesome guide! Now to figure out what to do with it since thats done... Literally took like 45 seconds to complete!
