Droid 2 Global ROOT, CUSTOM RECOVERY & SIM UNLOCK Tutorial

Try running it and when it freezes do a battery pull then run again and it usually works.

I have tried 7 times to use the z4root and no luck. Unknown sources is checked, USB debugging is checked. The apk is copied directly to the sd card. I get the z4mod screen and have tried to do permanent root. It just sits there and runs with "Running exploit in order to obtain root access..." at the bottom of the screen. I have let it run for 10 minutes. Stopped the application and tried over and over, letting it run different amounts of time....still no root access.

sigh......

I have a DROID2 GLOBAL, Android version 2.2

Any thoughts?

Another trick you could try - while z4root is running - plugin in and out the USB (other end connected to PC). This worked for me on two occasions - immediately after unplugging z4root reported achieving root.

Which version of z4root are you using?

I have found with D2G and Pro and also latest unreleased versions of firmware for DX/D2 that the 1.3.0 version will not work and you have to use the earlier 1.1.0 version. This version does not have a choice for permanent or temporary root but works perfectly every time within 30 secs on every device and all versions I have tested.

I dont know what you're talking about, but on my fully (stock vzn) updated D2G z4root 1.3 works without a hitch.

On a side note, id rather have had the d2 like i wanted than have had the store rep give me the d2G for the same contract price :/ damn thing only overclocks 8% before forced rebooting and instability.

OK, so I tried the battery pull.........nothing. I tried the plug - unplug usb cable method. Still nothing. I guess I am destined to use the D2G in only the way Verizon allows.

double sigh

Any other ideas are welcome to help me root the D2G.

Thanks in advance!

Well, this may sound dumb, but it seemed to work for me.. mine was taking forever on the 'exploiting' section today when I had to re-root after updating to whatever 2.4.330.. whatever that was came through today for me. Anyway, as it only took like 45 seconds last night plugged into the wall, I gave that another shot, and it went right through the process. NO idea if there is a correlation, but you never know.

I have debated on rooting ANY my phones forever, but wasn't sure I was comfortable with it. This guide was awesome about breaking it down and easing me into it.. Thanks for the awesome guide! Now to figure out what to do with it since thats done... Literally took like 45 seconds to complete!

This is true, took the words outta my keyboard lol

SUCCESS!!!!

After completely uninstalling the apk from the sd card, then re-installing I attempted to root my D2G with z4root. First try, the root process froze the phone. I pulled the battery and tried to root again with success!!!

Thanks to everybody with the help and ideas!

Now that I have finally succeeded in rooting my D2G, should I turn off (uncheck) "Unknown sources" and/or "USB debugging"?

Also, what other aps should I get? I downloaded Titanium. I remember hearing about busybox and bootstrap, but have not got them yet. Are they important to have on a rooted phone?

What else do I need?

Thanks!!!

If you don't want to risk ROMing your phone, buy Titanium Pro, and then freeze up the bloatware apps (link). Else get bootstrap and install it and then go for Fission ROM manager and have fun!

I am new to android, this guide seems simple enough, I just have a few questions.

If I root my Droid 2 Global running 2.2 now, will there be any problems when I try to install 2.3? If so will unrooting fix those problems?

If I don't plan to flash a custom ROM should I create a custom recovery and what ill affects can come from creating a custom recovery?

i did the root a few weeks ago and finally getting around to setcpu, it cant get root access... I installed a termininal edu and just typing su and I get access denied, so not sure what happened or where to go from here?
TIA

I had to do this twice, but it seemed to work ok... I recommend downloading the roote checker app because the first time I ran the app, it looked like it worked but didn't.

my phone seems to be a little slower now though since I rooted it.

Cbro - Rooting will not effect your OTA updates. ROMing it will. I would recommend putting a ROM on it if you feel comfortable, it is really a better experience.

Rhwim - Did you use the Z4 root? Its really a treat to root your phone, else it sounds like you are not rooted. Z4 is an app that you push a button to perma root and BAM, done! it also is goot to have "Superuser" (an app that I think Z4 installs) to give the root permissions to apps that request it.

smokin - are you sure you didn't do anything else after rooting it? rooting basically tells the system that you are not "average user" but now "super user", nothing else... just grants you right to do more...
