Getting Custom Kernels Running on the Droid X

I'm no Linux guy but am a developer and write a ton of high-level code now but have written a fair share of low-level C code, including implementing FAT12 (that was fun!). Anyways, moral of the story is that if I could get a VM with the proper tools on it to run, then I might have a chance at helping out. However, I lack the Linux administration skills to really want to build such a setup.

Any chance of building and providing something like this to the people willing to help you? For me, that's the #1 thing keeping me from jumping on board to help (perhaps I'm in the minority).

I'm using Gentoo which I really don't recommend for new users. For new users I highly recommend Ubuntu or mint.
And everyone can program they just need to learn. Once r3 comes out for kexec ill have a binary anyone can use.

When r3 comes out I'm going to try to have better docs and a binary release. Depends on how stable it is though.

Gonna start following this, if it can be done on X i dont see why it wouldnt work on d2g or any other phone (of course the programming will change, the method should stay basically the same).

I already have it ported to the Droid 2 (global), Droid x, and nexus s right now. The code is the same pretty much. It even still works on the milestone where the code came from.

Oh nice..... didnt read through all of it, just like the first 10 pages. If you ever need any help with testing for d2g just hit me up, might have to explain what you need me to do but im willing to do pretty much whatever as long as i can get it working again after.

I suggested this on Twitter, but would people be interested in donating to pay a freelancer to write the drivers for the radio? I know getacoder, elance, and odesk have huge pools of talented programmera, so we may have a good chance of SOMEONE being able to write it, but I'd need help paying for it.

Freelance Programming Fund

I'd be willing to donate an Andrew Jackson or perhaps a little more.

Keep up the good work Aliasxerog! I applaud you for tackling such a daunting task, all while still having to focus on coursework.

Awesome, thanks! Mind spreading the word?

Gonna do research tonight on these sites to get an approximation. Can anyone summarize the work we need done? If it's not too expensive, I may open the job tonight.

Cool, thanks! I dont have the cause I don't have a job to maintain a real website, and that's the link that's been put out for people. Eventually ill set her up to roll on her own terms.
