[How-To] Force Motorola Droid 2.1 OTA Update (ESE81)

kms, don't extract it at all

put the whole file (update.zip) onto your SD Card, in the main folder, not a sub folder

Reboot into recovery, follow install instructions others posted

the people that are getting the force closes are because they had launcher2 installed when they upgraded. You have to get into "settings" then manage applications and then clear defaults for that app. It should be possible... keep working at it.

Maybe I'm not doing something right, but when I download the file, I don't see the file (update.zip) anywhere listed.

Well, I forced the update and everything seemed to go fine. After the final reboot, I am getting the error message:

"The application Launcher (process com.android.launcher2) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."

Nothing works on my phone.

Any suggestions?

The first time I applied the update, I got the same error. Once everything reloaded, opened maps, did some stuff, then it closed. The phone seemed sluggish and nothing seemed to work.

I had pulled an update.zip file from androidcentral the first time, decided to give the file from Google a try and update from that.

After the second update, things appear to be working for me now. Not sure what happened the first time, but glad to see I wasn't alone.

If I experienced the same thing you're talking about, I did not have Launcher2 installed....

1-renamed update.zip
2-placed on root of sd card - opened astro, pressed home and update.zip has it's own folder
3-still getting "intallation aborted, unable to read footer"
help......

NO FOLDER. update.zip has to be a file in root of sdcard.

like your computer, if on drive c it would be c:\update.zip

Why is this so confusing for everyone? Most of our members are fairly PC proficient ...

I tried everything I could think of in 15 minutes, got bored with it, trying to wipe and reinstall again, see what happens.
